25 YEAR VOLUNTEER AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE AMHA, WHO CHAMPIONED FAIRNESS, INCLUSION AND ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL, AND RECIPIENT OF THE KEY TO THE TOWN OF AURORA
Hi Neighbours,
Lester B Pearson spent his early years in Aurora and attended the public school on Church Street. The family lived at this historic home, 39 Catherine Avenue. Pearson was a member of the Aurora Rugby team. Prime Minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968, Pearson was determined to resolve the “Great Flag Debate.” In 1964, after much debate in the House of Commons, he formed a new parliamentary flag committee whose decisions led to the adoption of our current National Flag in 1965.

Joe’s love for hockey didn’t begin like it does for most Canadians. Born in Morocco, he arrived in Canada unfamiliar with the sport. His journey started in grade school when friends invited him to go skating. Though he’d never skated before, their encouragement helped him learn, and he was hooked. By age 10, Joe was playing hockey and never looked back. He fell in love with the game—not just for the excitement, but for the lifelong values it teaches: teamwork, perseverance, and respect.
In 1991, Joe and his wife Andrea moved to Aurora with their 5-month-old son, Joshua. Their family grew with the arrival of Jesse in 1994. Watching his sons grow up on the ice reminded Joe of how much hockey shaped him. He saw the sport’s incredible impact on their confidence, friendships, and character. However, as time went on, Joe noticed barriers that made hockey less accessible. Rising costs, declining participation, and issues with fairness in tryouts were leaving some kids behind. Concerned that others might miss out on the sport that meant so much to him, Joe decided to act.
Joe joined the Aurora Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) as Fundraising Director in 1996 and soon became President. Determined to make hockey inclusive and accessible, he introduced key changes, including an overhaul of the tryout process. Players were assigned anonymous numbers to ensure fairness, evaluations became standardized, and constructive feedback was provided to help kids grow. These changes ensured tryouts weren’t just about selecting teams—they were about building confidence and fostering development, while providing better opportunities for all players.

From the very first day, Joe carried with him a profound sense of responsibility, not just to lead, but to serve, listen, and to make a difference. Joe’s leadership role wasn’t always easy, but he was driven by a vision of creating a supportive environment where every child could thrive. Seeing a shy skater grow into a team leader or hearing stories of coaches inspiring confidence in players made every challenge worthwhile. Joe always believed hockey was about more than just goals and scores—it was about teaching life skills that extend far beyond the rink.
In 2024, Joe retired from the AMHA, leaving behind a legacy of inclusion, fairness, and community. Honoured with visits from current NHL players that were in the AMHA system, a framed jersey and personal letter from Connor McDavid, and the Key to the Town of Aurora, Joe reflected on the journey with gratitude. For him, the AMHA has always been more than a league—it has been a second home and a lifelong family. His strong commitment to athletes and families is an inspiration and his legacy will be felt for generations. #GoodNeighbour

"Sweater weather is here... and sweaters make me look paws-itively dapper, don’t you think?"

Hi, I'm Kaiser! I came to Dog Tales with entropion and will be receiving surgery to correct this. This ball of fluff loves belly rubs more than anything, and I am looking for an active home that can continue my training. I'm strong and will need someone who is able to drain my energy. I would do best in a home with no small children; although I'm friendly, I'm too rambunctious for them. I'm currently being evaluated with dogs, but so far I've been friendly, and will need cautious introductions because other dogs are intimidated by my size.
Lucy
Woof! Hi, my name is Lucy. I was rescued by Vaughan Animal Services. I then went to Seneca’s Vet Tech Program where a student named Megan brought me home and made me her forever dog. I love car rides, comfy pillows and getting lots of love!
I'm Kolbe - short but mighty! I was surrendered when my family was unable to manage my exercise, mouthing and training needs. I'm looking for an experienced home without children to provide me with a very structured routine. I'm very friendly and my tail never stops wagging! I have the cutest smile when I'm excited. When I become anxious or playful, I can grab random objects or people's clothing. I will need a family dedicated to working through this and avoiding situations that get me over excited. I enjoy training for treats, getting butt scratches and playing a structured game of fetch/tug. I will require a few visits and training sessions at Dog Tales to ensure a smooth transition into a forever home.
Hi, I’m Brodie, a coonhound mix with a nose for adventure and a heart full of love! I’m a proud rescue pup, now living my best life. This is my first winter here, and let me tell you—snow is weird, but I think I like it. I like playing with my dog friends, taking leisurely walks, and keeping a watchful eye on the neighbourhood from my favourite window spots. Some people think I look a bit intimidating, but I’m really a big softie—I’ll be your best friend in exchange for a few treats! Mum says my name means "second son" in Scottish, and her first heart dog came all the way from the UK. Pretty big pawprints to fill, but I’m up for the challenge. Mum says I rescued her too, and honestly, I think we make a pretty good team. Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a suspicious -looking squirrel that needs my attention.
Hi, I’m Ziva (the diva) and I was flown in from Egypt about 4 years ago! At first I didn’t know what was going on, and for the first 6 months I was very depressed and not eating much at all. My daddy was very patient with me though and now I am thriving! He looks after me so well and has given me lots of toys to play with and scratching pads to keep my nails in shape. I love it here and my favourite thing to do is sit at the window and watch the snow falling. I am also a tv Addict and love sitting with my daddy to watch Netflix.
Hi there! I'm Spud Mu n, a 3 year old miniature dachshund who loves to bask in the sunshine - like it’s my full-time job! I'm a regular "snow dog" who is lucky enough to head south for the winter with my mom. Nothing beats a cozy spot with the warm sunbeams shining down on me!

This month is your final opportunity to contribute to your RRSP for the 2024 tax year. If you've already contributed to your RRSP but want to continue saving, there's also the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). Unlike the RRSP, TFSA contributions don't offer an immediate tax deduction, but withdrawals are tax-free, providing flexibility for short-term goals or emergencies. Black History Month is a time to celebrate the vast contribution made by Black Canadians to our culture, our history, and to our business community. It is also a time to reflect and acknowledge that although progress has been made, there is still much to be done to ensure equal rights and to eradicate systemic racism.
Equality of opportunity must be at the forefront of all that we do. Our government is committed to investing in programs that improve the social, health, and economic well-being of Black Canadians. We recognize that diversity is our strength. And we understand that we must invest in initiatives that empower Black Canadians and address longstanding and systemic racism issues.
Once again, I have the privilege and honour of partnering with three Black community groups whose impact on our communities is significant and inspirational. I want to thank Jerisha Grant-Hall, Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA); Phiona Durrant, Aurora Black Community; and Milton Hart, Aurora Black Caucus. Your organizations are leading us to a more equitable, more inclusive, and more welcoming place to call home.

Living with intention: embracing purpose and fulfillment in your senior years
How you can mindfully set the tone for a positive 2025, giving every day meaning
Understanding your values
Living with intention begins with understanding what truly matters to you — your core values. These are the fundamental beliefs that guide your choices and shape your life. When we make choices based on our values, it leads to greater happiness and less stress. So, the more we know what’s truly important —the easier it is to live intentionally.
Practising mindfulness
Mindfulness is being present and aware of what’s going on around you. It’s easy to get caught up in thoughts about the past or future, but mindfulness helps you stay grounded in the present moment. Mindfulness can also help reduce stress, improve mood, and increase your overall sense of well-being.
Setting goals and making purposeful decisions
Living with intention also means setting goals that align with your values. Goals don’t have to be huge — simple things like spending more time with family, taking up a new hobby, or focusing on your health can bring a sense of purpose and excitement to your life.
Reflection: adjusting along the way
Life doesn’t stay the same forever, and neither do our goals. As we age, our priorities might shift, and that’s okay. Reflection — looking back on your experiences and thinking about what’s important to you now — helps you stay aligned with your intentions.

Ice Lounge on Main makes it easy to embrace winter
Embracing this Canadian winter is about to get more fun with the return of Ice Lounge on Main, February 21 – 23.
Newmarket’s downtown will once again play host to this three-day festival. The entire Main Street will be licensed and will feature outdoor dining, ice bars, fire pits, and igloo seating areas, as well as live music, fire performances, and, of course, all the great downtown boutiques, shops, and restaurants we love. We’re also adding more activities for kids during the day. It will be a great way to embrace the chill of winter with the warmth of friends and family.
Last year’s Lounge was a rousing success and this year it is sure to be even better. This latest signature event builds on the Town’s calendar of special events that includes Canada Day, the summer music series, Splash of Culture, and the York Pride Festival. Events like these are the reason Newmarket has been named municipalities of year two years in a row by Festivals and Events Ontario.
These events give residents and visitors from near and far more reason to enjoy all that our Main Street has to offer. They encourage more visits and attract new customers.
Partnering with local businesses, such as the Main St. Merchants, on events like these is a big reason why Newmarket’s downtown is such a popular community gathering place, attracting over a quarter of a million visitors each year from near and far.
The inaugural Ice Lounge was an iconic winter event that residents and visitors loved. With its second annual edition, we’ll set a new standard for winter events in the 905!
Mark your calendar and I will see you there!
Mayor Taylor and Newmarket Council’s New Year's Levee a night to remember! On January 17th, Riverwalk Commons was on fire (literally) with a stunning fire show on the ice rink, plus the warmth of fire tables! From music to skating, food (including delicious BeaverTails), and fun, it was the perfect way to connect with our amazing community, while celebrating the new year.
Coyotes live in communities across Ontario. Here are some tips to help us better co-exist.
February is coyote mating season. Now and into the spring, coyotes are on the move – choosing a mate, hunting, locating a den site and establishing their territory.
5 ways to prevent coyote encounters:
1. Keep your pet on a short leash and away from potential coyote dens.
2. Do not feed wild animals.
3. Remove food attractants from your property.
4. Use motion sensitive lights in yards or gardens to make your property less attractive to coyotes and other nocturnal wildlife.
5. Ensure spaces around/under decks or sheds are closed off.
If you are approached by a coyote: stop and stay calm. Pick up small children and pets and stand still until they move on, or back away slowly. Never turn your back on a coyote. If threatened, get big and loud.

The Royal Hotel at the top of the Main St. hill was constructed in 1852 by Dr. Orin Ford. Dr. Ford was a homeopathic doctor or an “eclectic physician” who constructed a large new brick hotel which was named the “Royal Hotel . It was a two-storey brick hotel with a pitch roof where he opened a sanitarium (home for the sick).
Dr. Ford resided in the hotel and his daughter acted as operator. Here the Doctor practiced his homeopathy. This was an alternative form of medicine popularized in the 19th century based on the principle that the method of treating disease by drugs, given in minute doses, would produce in a healthy person symptoms similar to those of the disease (Homeopathic practices were not legal in the province until 1859)
The hotel served as a depot for horse-drawn livery carriages, which would meet the trains on the hotel and around 1886 a large new brick building was constructed to the north. It became known as the “New Royal Hotel”.
In the later 19th century, however, the hotel was converted to the “public house” of the nineteenth century – a hotel offering rooms and liquor to the public. As mentioned, by the later end of the century, Main St. was dotted with such establishments and they enjoyed much success With the onset of prohibition 1910-1911 the hotel, formerly a flourishing drinking establishment, now faced bankruptcy. Current proprietor A.W. Evans, applied to the town to approve conversion of the hotel to a hospital and it served such purpose during World War I. Following this, the hotel reopened like others on Main St. as a temperance hotel. (The photo above was taken in 1912.)
Not too long after the original brick building was heightened to three stories, the pitch roof being replaced with a flat roof, as it is today. For a time Specialty Mfg. Co., whose factories were located east of Main St. on the Holland River “flats”
Today the hotel contains both residence apartments and commercial businesses and is one of the earliest surviving structures on the St. Early this century, it has underwent many renovations giving the building a much-needed face lift including the stuccoing of the old brick walls. Today the building is used for both residential and commercial uses, including Main Street Realty Ltd

President Trump's threats are putting hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk. Doug Ford needs a strong mandate from the people for his plan to protect Ontario.
On January 8th, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy met with representatives from Job Skills to hear directly about the results of a $186,300 Resilient Community Fund grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The two-year grant, awarded in 2022, enabled Job Skills to develop a project by bringing a Registered Social Worker (RSW) on board to provide mental and physical health and well-being support to its staff, volunteers, and clients. This role specializes in stress management and mental health, helping people identify the source of stress or problems and strengthen their coping mechanisms.
The Grace Memorial Hockey Tournament & Charity Social, or as it is now known, Hockey For Grace, is a charity event run by Amy and Chris Manning in honor of their daughter Grace. Grace was born on February 16th eight weeks early, tiny but mighty. Our hearts shattered shortly after her arrival when we learned her time on earth would be short. Grace was only here for 8 short days but while she was, her home was Emily’s House, a children’s hospice in Toronto. The only of its kind in the GTA and 1 of 6 in Canada. They took care of us as well as our families. Feeding us, caring for us and letting us live like a normal family while having the medical supervision we needed. Emily’s House allowed us to live with Grace instead of just watching her die, filling her short life with many memories, adventures, and all the love in the world.
Hockey for Grace is a way for us to celebrate and keep Grace’s spirit alive. It allows us a way to give back to an organization that we will forever be indebted to, as well as starting a conversation about Pregnancy & Infant loss. This event has given Grace a legacy beyond just our grief; a way that she can continue to touch the world the way she touched so many in her short time here.

Exercise is incredibly important for all of us. We know being active provides many positive benefits. Youth engaging in physical activity is key focus of programs offered through Routes Connecting Communities and our partners. Physical activity:

promotes better sleep patterns, which are crucial for mental health. like sports, group workouts, or fitness classes offer opportunities to connect with others, make friends, and strengthen social bonds. Increases focus for Youth who exercise regularly and they tend to perform better academically.

Abuse Hurts wants to show its love and support for Joanne Russo as its Champion of the Month for February! Joanne has been a huge component of our successful annual fashion show events. Not only is she a part of the event committee but she is instrumental in providing valuable connections, great food, and an army of amazing volunteers. “If I can bring any type of awareness and be an advocate for those seeking a safe environment, this is the least I can do. I wish to bring awareness and, if possible, provide a safe environment to those in need. I have met so many amazing women who need our help in so many different ways. If I can bring some form of peace and safety in their lives that would bring me comfort”, she shared with Abuse Hurts CEO and Founder, Ellen Campbell.
“Russo Corp is a boutique insolvency firm located in Aurora, Ontario. We help individuals and Corporations who are struggling financially. We guide them down a path that will give them a fresh start to the road of recovery”, she continued. “In many ways our organizations are similar in that we help people who are struggling mentally, physically and financially. We help them pick up the pieces, assist them in putting the past behind them and giving them a fresh start by providing them with the necessary tools that are available to help them in their next journey in life.”
We couldn’t agree more. Thank you, Joanne!

Congratulations to you and the committee who helped put [the January edition] together! Have just finished reading this issue, and what a treat. So much coverage of events in our communities. Makes me want to run out and join something /anything, just to be a part of our town.
We met at the Aurora Senior's Centre ice cream social and you asked to take my picture, as I had won a prize. I teased you and asked if I was going to be blackmailed. As it happened, it was a very nice picture of me after all. Which you included into a Neighbour Paper. Thank you so much for that. - Helen, an avid reader
“February 15, 2025, is a special day for Canada - and for me personally! On this day in 1965, our iconic Maple Leaf flag was raised for the very first time on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, marking a new chapter in Canadian history. It was a moment of national pride and unity, as the flag became a symbol of our identity, inclusivity, and independence.
What makes this even more special for me is that February 15th is also my birthday! Sharing this date with such an important event in Canada’s story always reminds me of how lucky we are to live in a country that values diversity and community. I regularly wear a Canadian Maple leaf necklace and have a small collection of treasured Canadian Flag merchandise.
This year, February 15th falls during the Family Day long weekend, making it an even more meaningful time to reflect on what connects us—our families, our communities, and our shared Canadian pride. Every year, as I celebrate my birthday, I also take a moment to appreciate the Maple Leafa beautiful symbol that unites us all” - Maggie

What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music?
My favourite artist is a band! My favourite band is the rock band Rush and my favourite song is Fly By Night. Rush is the reason why I make music and play the drums to this day.
