NEIGHBOUR MEDIA UPDATE Happy Holidays, Neighbours! As 2023 comes to an end, we can’t help but look back on the year and smile. There have been so many amazing events, relationships built and memories made throughout the year. We are so grateful to be a part of such an incredible community! Thank you to our community partners and neighbours. There is so much to celebrate during December: • Hanukkah starts at nightfall on December 7th, ending at nightfall on December 15th; also known as the Festival of Lights, this Jewish festival commemorates the recovery of Jerusalem and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. • The Winter Solstice occurs on December 21st at 10:27pm! Also called the hibernal solstice, this is the day of the year with the least amount of daylight and the longest night. But good news, the days will only get longer from here on out (...until June 21st). • Christmas Day is December 25th; an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on this day as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. • Kwanzaa is December 26th - January 1st; an annual celebration of African-American culture, which culminates in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. • As always, New Year’s Eve will wrap up the year on December 31st! NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY Vince’s Carmen and Giancarlo Trimarchi
In the early hours of any given morning, Carmen Trimarchi begins his day at the Ontario Food Terminal. Trimarchi meticulously selects the freshest produce for his customers, a ritual spanning more than 40 years, embodies the essence of Vince’s – a commitment to freshness and quality that began in 1929. Art and Bob Vince founded Vince’s as a mobile produce bus in Toronto. In 1956, Vince’s moved to Sharon, establishing a seasonal open-air market that became a local staple. After Bob Vince’s passing in 1986, the business was sold to Carmen Trimarchi and Mario Testa, who upheld the founding brothers’ legacy. Under their stewardship, Vince’s grew from a seasonal produce stand to a small, independent grocery chain. Today, the business has locations in Sharon, Newmarket, Uxbridge, and Tottenham. The continued commitment to fresh produce, home-style prepared foods, and customer service has remained Vince’s hallmark, earning it numerous awards. Giancarlo Trimarchi, Carmen’s son and current President, continues this legacy. Vince’s dedication to excellence is evident in its many accolades, including Canada’s Best Managed Companies, the Gold award for the Tottenham location as top Small Surface Independent Grocer in South/Central Ontario in 2020, and most recently with Giancarlo receiving the “Business Leader of the Year” award at the 2023 Newmarket Business Excellence Awards. Vince’s has also been honoured for “Best Produce” in the Metroland Readers’ Choice Awards – for 26 consecutive years. But the company’s mission goes beyond selling food, as it also continues to make a positive impact in the community. Vince’s commits an annual budget to helping numerous causes, both large and small. Their signature program is the Community Product Initiative, which also relies on the support of customers and vendors. To date, it has raised more than $130,000 since 2018 for several life changing organizations. Some of these include food pantries, Southlake Hospital, the Women’s Centre of York Region, CHATS, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and many more. Indeed, Vince’s not only feeds their customers, but also nourishes the community, continuing a tradition of service and excellence that has been key to their business for nearly a century.
As a thank you to all of their amazing friends, family and clients, Team Cartwright hosted a Client Appreciation event at EVENTMRKT on November 9th!
There is still time to donate to the Abuse Hurts Toy Drive! Every holiday season, Main Street Realty collects toys from community members as a part of a toy drive for kids in need. All the donated toys are given to Abuse Hurts, who divides them amongst local charities, who in turn deliver them to children to open on Christmas morning.
It was a night of fun that included a mixologist creating amazing cocktails, delicious food from EVENTMRKT, magic from Mind Bender, prizes and giveaways, a bin for non-perishable donations for the Newmarket Food Pantry, and incredible company.

The Golden Years of Laughter and Humour What’s the secret to having a smoking hot body as a senior? Cremation. What is a prize old people can win for aging? Atrophy. Perhaps the oldest theory of humour, dating back to Plato and other ancient Greek philosophers, suggested that people find humour in, and laugh at, earlier versions of themselves and the misfortunes of others because of feeling superior. How is the Moon like dentures? Both come out at night! So, humour has remained one of the most important human activities, one that is enjoyed daily by people in every culture and at every age. Resulting laughing is universal: no matter how old one is, what language one speaks or what one’s physical or mental experiences. It's also instinctual. Infants laugh almost from birth; it's not a learned behaviour. Humans are hardwired for laughter. Research suggests that elderly people enjoy humour more than younger people, but that they have increasing difficulties in understanding it. Three older fellows are out walking. The first one says, “Windy, isn’t it?” The second one says, “No, it’s Thursday!” The third one says, “So am I. Let’s go get a beer. He’s so old that when he orders a three-minute egg, they ask for the money up front. So, the well-known aphorism does seem quite true that ‘laughter is the best medicine.’ Studies and research have proven the health benefits of laughing and maintaining a sense of humour in aging adults: One of the shortest wills ever written; Being of sound mind, I spent all the money.

On November 2nd, the Easter Seals VIPS (top event fundraisers) gathered in the kitchen of the Aurora Armoury for a pre-celebration with hockey legends, before the Hockey Draft event began. The next day, on November 3rd, the Easter Seals Ontario Celebrity Hockey Classic took place, raising over 200K for Easter Seals. A huge thanks to Jackson Events for their participation in providing the celebrity hockey players. Congratulations to Team Aurora for going 3-0!

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month Major is definitely how we would describe the time and efforts of our next Champion of the Month! Debbie Major is one of the faithful volunteers for Abuse Hurts and we love her energy, enthusiasm, and positive attitude. Debbie uses her gifts, talents and experience in the handling of social media posts for the Charity. If you know what’s happening at Abuse Hurts, it’s probably thanks to Debbie. For years, Ms. Major has been volunteering for Abuse Hurts in the social media management capacity. Debbie also pitches in wherever needed and consistently picks up the slack. She is a committed team player with a heart to support others. She is a dedicated wife and mother is very involved at her church, The Gathering Place of Aurora and believes in the blessing of giving and she walks that philosophy out – thanks for all you do, Debbie! Every Holiday Season, Abuse Hurts distributes toys to children which were collected through their annual Toy Drive. These toys go to children in need who are connected to the various agencies that Abuse Hurts serves. They also send lovely handbags that are filled with both essential and practical things for women (toiletries, make-up, personal hygiene items) to the mothers and other women in the shelters, to let them know they are not forgotten. Abuse Hurts hosted their Handbags of Hope event at Old Flame Brewery on November 23rd, where individuals came out and donated a purse filled with essentials, enjoyed great company, great food and good fun while supporting a great cause. It was such a great privilege to host my 2nd annual BBQ event for the Newmarket-Aurora community at Riverwalk Commons in late October. This event is an opportunity to bring people together, to foster a sense of unity, build relationships, and to celebrate the diversity that makes our community so special. Thank you to all the residents who participated. We have a wonderfully diverse, multicultural, & inclusive group of residents. This event underscores my objective to build our community together by promoting a life of acceptance, kindness, and compassion. Excellent opportunity to stop by our local hospital to announce that our government is investing over $17 million this year to boost Southlake Regional Hospital capacity, reduce emergency department wait times, and support critical upgrades. I was humbled to thank all the health care professionals present for their altruistic care for our residents.

As a government, we understand the need to take action to keep electricity costs down for families and small businesses, especially as we move into the winter months. Effective Nov 1/23, the Ontario Electricity Rebate is increasing from 11.7% to 19.3%. This increase protects electricity customers from the normal year-to-year variability in electricity costs – ensuring your bills remain affordable and predictable. In addition, we are supporting thousands of low-income families with an additional $50 million investment in the Ontario Electricity Support Program by increasing the income eligibility thresholds for the program by up to 35% (up to $65,000 per year after-tax). Our efforts in helping make life more affordable does not stop there, we are extending the gas tax subsidy of 5.7 cents/L to June 30, 2024.

On November 3rd, MPP Caroline Mulroney, along with other local dignitaries, supporters and community members, had the opportunity to stop in to meet with the team at New Leaf: Living and Learning Together Inc. Here they saw and heard about the upgrades that were made to the New Leaf woodshop (as well as other much needed improvements around the property), thanks to a $133,500 Capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) that was received last November. This grant has helped New Leaf to ensure that they are able to continue to deliver services in a safe and enriching space for all to enjoy in the community.
On November 18th, Market Brewing Co. hosted their annual Christmas Market! It was an amazing, fun-filled day for the whole family.... fur babies included. The community was encouraged to do some holiday shopping at the outdoor market, featuring over 20 local vendors and the 6ft Apart Food Truck. Dana Ricker was playing an acoustic set inside, where attendees gathered to enjoy the music and of course delicious MB brews. Your "ticket" to attend this event was a non-perishable food donation for the Newmarket Food Pantry! Thank you to MB Co. for bringing the community together once again, to celebrate the Christmas season.

On October 26th, Caroline Mulroney MPP - South Simcoe announced that the Ontario government is providing $117,864.58 to help the South Simcoe Police Service provide specialized support to people who are experiencing a mental health crisis. The funding is being delivered through the Mobile Crisis Response Team Enhancement Grant program and enables police to utilize trained crises workers when responding to those in need.
Shoutout to York Simcoe Express for their annual fundraiser "Pink in the Rink". For the entire month of October the teams raised funds through bake sales and selling their signature pink hoodie for the Southlake Foundation Cancer Research Department. This year they raised over $3,700 and players honoured family members that are currently in treatment or have completed their treatment by bringing them on the ice for the cheque presentation. #goodneighbours

Will interest rates ever come down? Sir Isaac Newton said, “what goes up, must come down” The gravity of the more recent interest rate environment, however, seems much more like we’re living space… Houston, we have a problem. THE GOOD NEWS The Bank of Canada held interest rates from further increase for the second time in a row (October 25th) as inflation shows continued signs of cooling. Benjamin Tal, chief economist for CIBC has been citing statistics and sentiments that it is very realistic to see inflation stabilize in the medium term which will allow for a continued decline of interest rates over the next 3-5 years. While it is unrealistic to expect interest rates in the 1%- 2% range again, it is realistic to stabilize in the 4%-5% range; a more typical interest rate range overall. Better days are surely ahead… The longer-term outlook (5-10 years) shows signs of a very promising housing market bringing buyers off the side-lines and stimulating action in the selling market. The History of Roadhouse & Rose Horse-powered machinery was common-place when the Roadhouse Cabinet Making & Undertaking firm was established in 1842. Samuel Roadhouse, 18 years old, set up his business on Main St., the hub of the hamlet of Newmarket. Here he was able to set up his factory to manufacture coffins and furniture, and housed a livery stable of horses which were used, amongst other things, to pull the hearse. Samuel would go on to become Reeve after Newmarket was made a village in 1857, the equivalent of being a Mayor in a larger town/city. In the 1860’s, Samuel’s son Neriah John “N.J.” began to apprentice at the firm. In 1890, when Samuel passed away, N.J. assumed control of the business. Like his father, N.J. was very active in local affairs and served as Mayor of Newmarket from 1905-1907. N.J.’s daughter, Mildred, would marry Lyman Rose, another local undertaker. Lyman had recently purchased the Watson & Hall Funeral Home on Main St. (present location of Roadhouse & Rose) in 1921. He chose to go into business with his father-in-law the same year and they moved to the present location, creating the firm “Roadhouse & Rose”. In 1953 Lyman & Mildred retired, selling the business to three employees: Donald Rose (their son), Rodney Ecobichon and Wray Playter. Wanting to focus on assisting families in their time of need, the furniture side of the business was discontinued in 1969 and visitation rooms were added. In 1956 a fire at the old Newmarket Era Office, which was adjacent to the funeral home, spread, demolishing the third storey and the interior of the funeral home. At this time Roadhouse & Rose used the Denne Bosworth residence at the north-west corner of Main St. and Davis Dr. for funeral services. In 1974, Wray Playter’s nephew, Glenn, became a partner, after purchasing the interest of Rodney Ecobichon. Together with his wife Jackie, they took the business over and operated Roadhouse & Rose from 1993-2009. In 2009 the firm was purchased by Wes Playter and Gregg Davey. In 2010 the firm embarked on a heritage project which restored the Tudor style roof which was lost to fire in 1956. Later the front façade was restored and the front lobby expanded as well as new reception facilities upstairs. Sadly Glenn & Gregg passed away in 2020. Today Roadhouse & Rose is operated by Wes Playter and Allana Coolahan with their incredible team!

Yellow Brick House Break the Silence, Walk in My Shoes event was held at St. Andrew's College, on November 5th. It was a powerful event hearing impact statements and a ribbon ceremony with 46 women tying a purple ribbon around a lamp post, one for every woman that has been killed in gender-based violence in 2023. The students of St. Anne's School and SAC made the signs, and volunteered assisting in making the day a huge success. A big thank you to the sponsors, walkers and donors the event raised $118,000.

Central York Fire Services (CYFS) conducted a new training program focused on fighting fires in high rise buildings to better position staff to respond to emergencies of today and the future in line with the growth of our communities in Newmarket and Aurora. The newly formed local service club, the Zonta Club of Central York held their Chartering Ceremony on November 7th. Zonta is a leading global organization of individuals empowering women, including young women, worldwide through service and advocacy. It was started in 1919 in Buffalo, New York and is now in 65 countries around the world with more than 2,200 clubs and 26,000 members. On November 3rd, Leah Taylor Roy, MP Aurora Oak Ridges Richmond Hill was delighted to welcome Hon. Filomena Tassi - Minister Responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) to the riding to visit local businesses. The 2nd Annual Tree Lighting at Oakridge’s took place the evening of November 14th. The community gathered, children from the Marquee Theatre Group sang carols, and the second children’s book written by Deb Kitchen (owner of Oakridge's Fashion) "Look up and Sing” was launched, along with the ornaments that feature the characters from the books. December marks the beginning of the Holiday Season. It is a time for family and friends to gather and celebrate. It is a time for giving and sharing, not only with family and friends, but also with all those around us who may need a little support or a smile. Our government is continuing to support Canadians struggling the most with the cost of living at this time. Through the Affordable Housing and Groceries Act (Bill C-56), we are making life more affordable for all Canadians. The inflation rate has been coming down. Our recommendations from the food price study I participated in are being implemented. Our national housing plan is funding even more new rental buildings and affordable housing for Canadians and our National Childcare and early learning program has cut the cost of childcare in half. As your Member of Parliament, my priority is to ensure that your views and concerns are shared and advocated for at the national level. Although I’m social I sometimes like a quiet night at home watching Netflix. What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why? Fall!I love the colours and the cool crisp air. What does being a good neighbour mean to you? A good neighbour is someone who looks out for you and your family, and helps make your community what it is. If you are a good neighbour chances are you will have good neighbours yourself. People tend to respond in kind to positive behaviour. If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? My Grandma Racine. She died at 92 - she was a widow from an early age and very independent, but was a social worker in her day, had a university education and she was a proud Canadian. We were quite close, I admired her and she lived a good long life.

The leads of the Newmarket Fill a Purse for a Sister campaign held an event at The George on Main Street to raise awareness, funds and to collect purses for women in need. The evening included live music by Bianca Rollo, and speeches from Mayor Taylor, Angel Freedman (founder of the campaign), and Women's Centre of York Region Executive Director Liora Sobel.
The Re/Max Realtron TurnKey Team presented a cheque for $2,000 to Inn From the Cold to Support a Night at the Inn program on November 8th. This winter, Inn From the Cold will provide over 4,732 shelter stays for our most vulnerable neighbours. They do this with the support of 300 volunteers who provide 6,622 volunteer hours of service. The Aurora Sports Hall of Fame Induction Celebration Dinner is their premiere event showcasing those who have been instrumental in raising the profile of sports in Aurora. On November 2nd, at the Royal Venetian, the Class of 2023 was inducted into the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame located at The Stronach Centre. The celebration not only honours Athletes, Coaches and Builders it is also an opportunity to inspire future generations of athletes in our community.
A BIG Neighbour shout-out to Hometown Hero Kevin Mills for his dedication and strength, raising awareness and funds for activity-based therapy, accessibility, and inclusivity of the community with disabilities. On September 30th, at the Breakwater Lighthouse in Victoria BC., he completed his 8400th km and finished his cross-Canada bike ride journey! On November 2nd Mayor John Taylor and the Town of Newmarket held a fundraiser for Pedaling Possibilities at the Old Town Hall! The community came out to catch up with Kevin and his team as they shared their stories of biking across Canada.

Aurora’s top sport volunteers were honoured at Sport Aurora’s 13th annual recognition event at Aw Shucks Seafood Bar and Bistro in Aurora. The luncheon was all about celebrating those who devote their time coaching, fundraising, supervising, or teaching, receiving only the satisfaction that their participants enjoy a high-quality sports experience. Teams and organizations that represented baseball, tennis, swimming, hockey, special Olympics, and more, gathered to honour 23 coaches, organizers and other key volunteers who’ve gone above and beyond in serving their players and sporting organizations.

On November 1st, the Doctors of Southlake Regional Health Centre went from their scrubs to suits and hit the runway for the Whiskey, Wine & MR Menswear event at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre. This incredible event hosted by Mike Rathke, owner of MR Menswear, is in support of the Southlake Foundation Cancer program "Here is Where Cancer Meets it's Match". Mike has battled Cancer twice and this event is his way of supporting our local hospital that helped him through his most difficult time. This year's event raised $74,000! Congratulations to everyone involved.
The Town of Aurora continues it's series to ensure Safe Sport in our community with the course, "Making Ethical Decisions". By successfully completing the N.C.C.P. Make Ethical Decisions (M.E.D.) training, the coaches will be fully equipped to handle ethical situations with confidence and surety.
