A MESSAGE FROM MPP DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

Partner:

Summer is a wonderful time of year. I hope you have been able to get out and truly enjoy this beautiful season in Newmarket—Aurora.

There are some amazing things going on in our Community. Six years ago, I met with Rebecca Shields, CEO of CMHA York and South Simcoe, to discuss gaps in our local mental health services. On July 3rd I was so proud to announce the new York Region Mental Health Community Care Hub would be based in Newmarket. The new Hub, the first of its kind in York Region, will provide comprehensive care for individuals aged 12 and older ensuring everyone in our community can access the help they need, when they need it.

The NWMRKT Proud 2024 campaign wrapped up on July 15th. They were happy to announce they raised $38,014.65 for the Newmarket Food Pantry. Congratulations to Joanne and Rebecca for their leadership with the success of this campaign!

This summer, I am door knocking to engage in conversations with YOU to see how I can further support our community’s needs. In the interim, before I get to your door, please know that I am available to meet with you at my constituency o ce or in the neighbourhood. Call me at 905-853-9889 if you would like to chat.

As we look ahead, make sure you mark September 29th on your calendar because you are cordially invited to take part in our Annual Community BBQ at Riverwalk Commons. We’ll have food, entertainment and fun for the kids so come on over 2p.m. - 4p.m. on Sunday, September 29th and meet some of your Neighbours!

Until then, Happy August everyone – enjoy this beautiful month and stay hydrated!

Trees

With the rainy and warm summer we’ve had, the tree canopy is looking lush these days.

In addition to making Newmarket more beautiful, trees provide shade and shelter. They reduce home energy costs, improve air quality and absorb rainwater, reducing the risk of flooding.

The leafy canopy in Newmarket and York Region is no accident. It is, in part, the result of deliberate ongoing efforts to preserve land, plant new trees, and expand the area that trees cover.

As part of its greening strategy, York Region has planted more than two million trees; 116,000 trees in 2023 alone.

We’re also expanding the tree coverage in Newmarket, planting more than 2,000 trees in recent years. The canopy is close to covering 30 percent of the Town and we are well on our way to achieving our target of 35 percent coverage by 2051.

To continue to expand and enhance our green space, the Region has recently added more than 350 acres of land to its forest system. Similarly, the Town of Newmarket is taking steps to protect natural areas within its borders, including preserving 80 acres, with a commitment to plant 5,000+ trees, in the Shining Hill area.

While you might not have room for a forest, every tree has benefits, including those in your yard. The LEAF program makes adding a tree to the yard easier, with discounted trees and expert advice.

I’d encourage everyone to enjoy some time in the woodlots and forest in and around Newmarket. Head out now to see the majesty of the full canopy, and in a few months when the trees turn the warm colours of Autumn, and through the winter months, when the rustle of leaves is replaced with the crisp crunch of snow underfoot.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church

The Anglicans were amongst the first to set-up organized religion here in Newmarket (Following the Methodists and, of course, the Quakers).

Anglican teaching was initially administered by travelling “saddlebag preachers” who travelled through Upper Canada in the very early nineteenth century.

In 1832, the Anglicans had grown in number such that the need for a permanent structure was deemed necessary. At the corner of Church & D’arcy Streets was constructed a small frame building. Christened “St. Paul’s”, this building eventually received an addition on every side, to accommodate the growing congregation.

A cemetery for the new Anglican Church was established on Eagle Street, just west of the church. This cemetery still exists today, where many of our community’s earliest pioneers are laid to rest.

In 1884 the old church was demolished and a new church was constructed on the same site. It was built in the Gothic Revivalist style and built of stone. The church was built with a dominant tower on the south side and contained patterned stone arches. Eventually a manse was built adjacent to the north for the priest’s residence.

Aside from a brief period in the 1990’s, where the church’s structural integrity was brought into question, the congregation has been using the church consistently for 140 years. Afterwards, the church went through some historically sensitive renovations, both to enlarge the facilities and “link” the church to the manse building, also making the building fully accessible.

St. Paul’s remains today one of the original five historic churches in downtown Newmarket. Under the religious guidance of the Rev. Canon David Warren, the interim Priest-in-charge, the congregation celebrates 200 years of the Church of England in Newmarket.

Peach and Cream

We're two sisters that go together like Peaches & Cream! We were not wanted by our owner after being purchased as puppies and are only a year old. Cream; I was born fully blind and deaf, rely on Peach to navigate and love the security of being held by humans. But I'm totally confident and will find my way into any lap nearby! Peach; I am a little more shy, but we are both full of energy and excitement. Our ideal owner appreciates our temperaments and loves that about us!

Nellie

They call me gentle Nellie! I was a stray, picked up by another shelter and never claimed. I'm a little timid at first, but once my behind starts wagging, there’s big time sweetness coming your way! I am young and quite active, and will need obedience training, including lots of time spent on leash manners. I've already come out of my shell so much and can’t wait to let my true nature emerge once I'm in a stable home.

My majestic and loving nature reflects our farm's passion towards lavender and the guests who come to visit us!

Kaiya

Hi there, my name is Kaiya! I’m a Shepherd Lab Husky mix that is 1 year and 4 months old. I was abandoned by my owner when I was just a puppy, but now I live in my furever home with my parents and big brother! Canada Child Benefit

Raising kids is expensive. That’s why the Government of Canada created the Canada Child Benefit to give extra financial support to hard-working middle-class families and to give kids the best possible start in life. Since its introduction in 2016, the Canada Child Benefit has helped make life more affordable for parents and lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty.

For the 2024–25 benefit year, families can receive up to $7,787 per child under the age of 6 and $6,570 per child aged 6 through 17. This means moms and dads could receive up to $350 more than last year. This represents an increase of 4.7% from the previous year.

The Canada Child Benefit has been indexed to inflation using Consumer Price Index data as reported by Statistics Canada—a widely used measure of inflation. Indexing the Canada Child Benefit occurs every July, ensuring that the benefit protects families from inflation and provides certainty and predictability of support parents can count on.

The Canada Child Benefit is part of our work to support families and make life cost less. This includes the Canada-wide early learning and childcare system, which has already reduced fees for regulated childcare by half on average across the country, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan, which will make trips to the dentist more affordable for up to 9 million uninsured Canadians.

These are just some of the things that we’re doing to build a better and fairer future for every generation.

INTRODUCING

AMICA AURORA PROMENADE

Are you or a loved one thinking about senior living? We’re pleased to announce that our newest residence is opening fall 2025.

Amica Aurora Promenade will offer a range of personalized, professional care options, including Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, as well as premium amenities and social activities that allow residents to continue to live the lifestyle they want.

Northridge Community Church of The Salvation Army Central York and the York Region Food Network partnered to host a monthly Affordable Fresh Food Market! The markets are open to anyone and everyone, making it easier to access fresh produce. Don't miss this month's market on Wednesday August 28th, 4pm - 5:30pm. Bring your reusable bag to shop for some great fresh fruits and vegetables!

Seniors and self confidence

Self-confidence is “a feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities and judgment.” As people retire and experience health issues and other losses after age 60, self-confidence tends to decline, further exacerbating health issues. Amica team members know that recognizing this pattern is the first step to negating it, and use the following tips to prevent it from recurring:

Tip 1: Challenge yourself to move more

Setting small fitness goals and achieving them creates a sense of mastery. Amica Life Enrichment Coordinators make sure to organize fun and social exercises for residents every day.

Tip 2: Learn from role models

When you consider that Jane Fonda is still performing, it proves that being “too old” to do something is unfounded. Many active seniors in Amica residences inspire fellow residents to do what they love or find a new hobby.

Tip 3: Help someone in need

Volunteering increases feelings of value and purpose, and several seniors find volunteer positions right within our residences.

Tip 4: Fake it until you make it

Even if you have no plans, dressing well and practicing good hygiene will give you a lift.

Tip 5: Try something new

Break out of your comfort zone. Learn something and watch your skills improve.

Tip 6: Spend time with friends

Exchange wisdom, receive support and laugh with peers and loved ones.

Senior living at Amica makes socializing, staying active and learning new things effortless, with everything at your fingertips. Experience a taste of Amica today: www.amica.ca/aurora-promenade

Pregnant and parenting students (14-21 years) come from across York Region to continue their high school education at our YCDSB-accredited classroom. What makes our school different is that we offer free onsite childminding and transportation assistance to make it easier to attend. Our dedicated teacher customizes the curriculum for each student to help teen moms reach their educational goals.

Young families start the day with a group breakfast before students head to class and their little ones go to our Child Development Centre (CDC) for early learning. Our volunteers help by tutoring moms or playing with babies in CDC. At lunchtime, everyone comes together for a meal, and our counselling team connects with students, offering support and guidance. Afternoons are spent on school projects, learning about child development, parenting skills, and family nutrition.

Graduating high school is a significant achievement for any teenager. For a pregnant or parenting teen, it is a dream come true. Graduation night is a special occasion at Rose of Sharon. Moms and babies graduate together while families, friends, staff, and volunteers join in the celebration. Our grads felt extra special thanks to flower bouquets given by Neighbour Media and professional photos taken by Glenn Rogers Photography.

The next step can be daunting as young moms tackle paying for post-secondary school or skills training. Fortunately, we have a group of community partners who provide scholarships and bursaries to help cover costs for tuition, technology, and skills training. We thank the following for supporting our young mothers: Colleen Kelly Memorial Scholarship, Sisters of the Good Shepherd, CFUW Aurora-Newmarket, CFUW Charitable Trust, Our Lady of Grace – Catholic Women’s League, CPG Aerospace, Rotary Club Newmarket, Spectrum Health Care Foundation, and private donors for their generous support. Visit our website to learn more: roseofsharon.com.

Join us in congratulating George and Ruth, owners of Pizza 77, as they embark on their well-deserved retirement. George arrived from Lebanon in 1990, determined to build a better life despite not knowing English. In 1993, George started Pizza 77 on Main Street in Mount Albert. By 2000, Pizza 77 moved to its current location at 19882 Centre Street, and George proudly purchased the building in 2001. "Over the years, many of the town's students have worked with us and it's been an incredible journey serving this community. We are deeply grateful for the support and love we've received. Thank you to the Mayor, Councillors, and everyone in town for celebrating these amazing 31 years with us," says Ruth. Thank you, George and Ruth, for serving our community for over 30 years. We wish you all the best in your retirement and in this next chapter.

Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers celebrated their 2024 graduating class on June 26th at Old Town Hall. In collaboration with the York Catholic District School Board, Rose of Sharon supports individuals who are prenatal and parenting in the completion of credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). York Academy is offered at their Newmarket location, but is available to individuals across York Region. Students have access to online and onsite education resources and support from a qualified teacher as well as group parenting and personal development programs. Individuals also have access to a counsellor who will offer one-on-one supportive counselling, information and referrals, and practical supports. Congratulations to this year's graduating class!!!

A Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

Bringing

the Smiles to Our Community

Every great community story begins with a smile, and ours is no different. Meet Mrs. Johnson, an 85-year-old with a sparkle in her eye and a zest for life, at our local senior center. For years, Mrs. Johnson had struggled with dental issues but could not afford the necessary care because she was uninsured. This left her at risk for numerous other health problems. Thanks to the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), Mrs. Johnson now has access to the dental care she needs, protecting her overall health and allowing her to enjoy life to the fullest. Her story is just one of many reflecting the positive impact of this program.

Our government is committed to helping millions of Canadians get the dental care they need. We are not just making the system fairer; we are also making it easier for dental professionals, and dental providers in Canada to offer care covered under the plan on a claim-by-claim basis without formally signing up. This means fewer forms, faster care, and more savings.

Since the launch of the CDCP, more than 2 million seniors have been approved for coverage. Since May 1, over 200,000 have already received care for services like cleanings, fillings, and dentures. On June 27th, eligibility expanded to include children under 18 and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate. This expansion means approximately 1.2 million more people, including around 938,000 children and close to 183,000 adults with disabilities will have improved access to affordable oral health care.

Our team is here to support you every step of the way. If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out via telephone at 905-773-8358 or email at leah.taylor.roy@parl.gc.ca. For more detailed information, you can also scan the QR code provided in the flyer.

Get to Know THE DANCERS

On Thursday, October 10th these #GoodNeighbours will be dancing at the Royal Venetian, raising money for Easter Seals Ontario

Thank you to Artistica Ballroom Dance Studio for donating their time to get these novice dancers ready for the big night! We wanted to get to know this year's dancers a little better, and have asked them each the following 2 questions:

1. What is your favourite dance move? 2. Why did you decide to dance this year?

Debora Kelly

I'm always ready to put on my boogie shoes! My best moves (what can I say, there's more than one) are straight out of Saturday Night Fever — Disco Diva forever.

I'm inspired by Easter Seals' vision of a more inclusive society where kids with physical disabilities are valued and respected, and have what they need to achieve their goals. This event is an amazing opportunity to work with some wonderful members of our community to help create awareness and raise funds that will have a measurable impact.

Oh dear - does the tarantella work? LOL. Hip hop.

It’s my way of supporting kids in need. I have kids of my own and as a mother, they are my world. This is my way of giving back.

I love to dance with my wife Val, especially Latin dances like Merengue and Bachata. I have always loved Salsa, but cannot seem to pick it up... so I would love to learn it from Artistica. For a sneak peek of my moves, check out @joeandvalnofrills on TikTok!

I decided to dance this year because I love the work that Easter Seals does for kids and I am honoured to be a part of this amazing annual event, raising funds for an incredible organizationEaster Seals which helps support kids with physical disabilities is so special. I just hope that I can dance!

Mae Khamissa

My favourite dance move would typically be anything to do with Latin Music, like salsa and bachata.

I decided to do this mainly because it’s for such a great cause and knowing how much kids benefit from this event. I loved seeing how much Raz enjoyed the experience as well.

Marco Di Girolamo

Master of the chair dance

I have been very fortunate in my life and have been helped along the way by some amazing people. It was this sense of selfless giving that instilled a strong sense of community in me. I have made it a priority to give where and what I can, to make the communities I live in a better place for all people. It's the least I can do to support these kids and give them an opportunity to enjoy camp and just be kids.

Myles Doak

The Moonwalk

Dancing with the Easter Seals Stars is such an awesome and fun event, for a fantastic cause. From the very first one that I attended 5 years ago, I knew I wanted to dance… but was told I wasn't a star at the time. So I’m very happy to be hitting the dance floor this year!

Paulo Da Silva

Any dance move that I can do without looking foolish! Seriously, the "Box Step", this classic move is fundamental in many ballroom dances, including the waltz and rumba. It's easy to learn and perform, making it my choice, especially for my skill level. Raising money for Easter Seals is a unique opportunity to contribute to a cause that transforms lives. By participating, I can help raise awareness and raise funds which directly support Easter Seals' programs. I have always looked for ways to give back to the community, and participating in this event is a meaningful way to help others and make a positive impact.

I love all salsa and bachata dance moves. The constant twists, turns, and hip movements bring great energy, fun, and positivity to the dance floor.

I am both honoured and humbled to be asked to dance in this year’s event. What a fantastic way to celebrate the community while raising funds for Easter Seals. The children are a true inspiration and the real stars of the show!

On June 21st, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy stopped by to meet with representatives from the Social Enterprise for Canada (SEC). It was a great opportunity for SEC to update MPP Gallagher Murphy on the impact that their two-year, $200,000 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is having since receiving it last spring. The grant is helping SEC to provide coaching and training opportunities to strengthen leadership, and for the group to improve its cyber security.

The Team Cartwright 3rd Annual Golf Tournament was held on June 27th at Cardinal Golf Club. This year the golf day was in support of Abuse Hurts, and raised $5,300! As always, it was a super fun day for all those who participated. Thank you to Chris Cartwright, his team, the sponsors and golfers. We are already looking forward to next year!

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

We are honoured to name Parmjit Bhullar as our August Champion of the Month! Parmjit (Parm) was a HUGE help to Abuse Hurts a while ago when we experienced a flood at our o ces. Many ceilings, walls and floors were ruined on two floors and a lot of renovations had to occur to get us up and running again. Parm was an instrumental part of that process and, in keeping with his reputation of having a very generous nature, he went above and beyond what we expected from him.

Mr. Bhullar was originally a carpet installer when he moved to Canada. He worked very hard and saved his money, eventually purchasing his first End of the Roll franchise. His business grew from there and he acquired more locations. When Abuse Hurts was introduced to him, we were purchasing flooring and paint. Of course, it’s hard to match old, outdated flooring and so he very generously donated extra flooring and paint so that the rest of our o ce space would match the newly renovated areas.

We have worked hard to make our space look warm and inviting. The clientele that come through our doors have been through a lot so we like our space to feel comfortable and light. We had no idea the new facelift we received would even give our staff and volunteers a positive boost! Every day we come to work, we are grateful for our lovely space and are thankful to Parm for his willingness to help.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS YEAR’S FINALISTS!

“On July 3rd each year, we get to celebrate the birthdays of 3 cherished community figures: Mike D'Angela, Bob Kwapis, and Lynnette Lanning!

Mike's establishment, The George, isn't just a pub; it's a hub of camaraderie where stories flow as freely as the taps. Known for his impeccable taste in beer and his knack for creating a welcoming atmosphere, Mike has turned The George into a beloved cornerstone of Newmarket's social scene. Bob, in his role as Ward 5 Councillor, exemplifies unwavering commitment to his constituents. With a reputation for accessibility and genuine care, Bob works tirelessly to address local concerns, champion community initiatives, and ensure that Newmarket continues to thrive. Lynnette, alongside her work at Neighbour Media, embodies the essence of community engagement. Whether she's capturing moments of joy at local events or amplifying voices through storytelling, Lynnette's dedication to fostering connections and spreading positivity shines through in all she does.

Thank you to our page sponsor

This triad of community pillars each contributes in their unique ways to make Newmarket a place where people truly feel at home. Their shared birthday symbolizes not just a date on the calendar, but a celebration of camaraderie, service, and the enduring spirit of community.

We have some exciting news… There is a new Neighbour joining our team! Neighbour Media’s Elisa and Myles are excited to share that later this year, they will be welcoming their first child into the world. Due December 1st, their baby boy will be the newest and youngest member of the team. Elisa will continue to work up until the due date, and even once their son arrives, she will continue to stay involved in the Neighbour operations - as she will have a tough time letting go of the reins of their business baby; Neighbour Media. If you see them around town over the coming months, be sure to say hello!

Registered Physiotherapist, Level 2 Sport, Level 2 Orthopaedic, Level 1 Pelvic Floor - Lifespring Physiotherapy Get to Know your Neighbours

What is your most memorable community moment?

Working with local sports teams including swimming, hockey and volleyball to provide injury prevention screening and exercises to youth athletes. It is always great to hear athletes say they have made these exercises a part of their workout routine, and they are performing better.

Where is your favourite place to go in the community?

I love walking to and around the Main Street area in Newmarket. The restaurants and local businesses are incredible and the flowers and landscaping in the Riverwalk commons are beautiful!

What does being a good neighbour mean to you?

What being a good neighbour means to me is supporting and helping others in the community. Having each other's back and lifting up all the unique voices we have in the community.

IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Family Owned. Family Run.

Farming isn’t easy, but for the Rawson’s, it is a passion!

Meanwhile Farm is a family run blueberry farm and venue just outside of Newmarket. Established in 2014, Meanwhile has grown to become a popular summer destination for families from around Southern Ontario. We are more than just blueberries though, as we regularly host events, make for a beautiful outdoor summer venue, and provide hours of family entertainment for our visitors during blueberry season.

Blueberry season starts at the end of July and runs through the end of August. All our berries are hand picked, never sprayed and always fresh. At Meanwhile Farm, you can expect to meet lots of friendly people and tons of friendly animals. There’s always something fun going on, so make sure to book extra time… you’ll definitely want to stay a while!

Tending to seven hundred blueberry plants takes a lot of work, thank goodness for a big family! Scott, Lisa and all of the Rawson family embrace farm life and live it to the fullest. The family handles all of the day-to-day operations, with friends and extended family always dropping by to help out.

At Neighbour Media, we love to Eat, Drink, Play & Shop in the neighbourhoods that we are a part of! It is so important to #SupportLocal and we encourage you to check out this month's featured businesses.

Is there a business that you think should be highlighted on this page? Reach out and let us know!

Be sure to check out the Eat & Drink in Your Neighbourhood podcast on our YouTube channel!

We grow our delicious high-bush blueberries in our two acre field, in total we have over 700 berry bushes. We never spray our plants, instead choosing to let them grow on their own as nature intended. We harvest our ripe berries from the bush by hand. No machines or berry rakes here. All of our bushes are hand pruned and weeded each year, ensuring healthy and flavourful berries!

Champions

in Supporting the Mental Health Program at Southlake

NewRoads Automotive Group has been a driving force behind Southlake Regional Health Centre’s Mental Health Program through its annual LAKERIDE event.

This initiative not only raises vital funds but also fosters important conversations about mental health in our community.

“We are so thankful to NewRoads Automotive Group and participants of the NewRoads LakeRide event for the incredible support they have shown for the Mental Health Program at Southlake, recognized by the recent naming of the NewRoads Automotive Group Emergent Mental Health Assessment Unit.

This new unit provides a space where patients can step away and have the peace, autonomy and independence to focus on their healing, without being distracted by other things that happen in a hospital. It gives a home-like atmosphere, easing anxieties and helping patients feel comfortable and safe, while respecting their right to privacy. We see the difference this space makes every day and are so grateful.”
