HOW TO HANDLE LEAVES ON YOUR LAWN: MULCHING VS. REMOVAL
BY AARON JOHNSON

As September arrives and trees begin their spectacular color transformation, homeowners face the annual question: What’s the best way to handle falling leaves on your lawn? At Uncle Onion’s Lawn Care, we’ve helped countless property owners navigate this seasonal challenge, and the answer isn’t always as straightforward as you might think.
The Case for Mulching Leaves
Mulching leaves directly into your lawn can be one of the most beneficial practices for your grass and soil health. When done correctly, this approach transforms what many consider yard waste into valuable organic matter.
Benefits of Mulching:
• Natural fertilization: Decomposing leaves release nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—essential nutrients your lawn craves.
• Soil improvement: Organic matter enhances soil structure, water retention, and beneficial microbial activity.
• Cost savings: Eliminates disposal fees and reduces the need for commercial fertilizers.
• Environmental impact: Keeps organic matter out of landfills while reducing carbon footprint.
Best Practices: Use a mulching mower with sharp blades, and make multiple passes if necessary to achieve small leaf fragments. The goal is pieces no larger than a dime that will settle between grass blades rather than forming a mat on top.
When Removal Makes Sense
Despite mulching’s benefits, certain situations call for complete leaf removal:
• Heavy Leaf Coverage: When thick layers of leaves blanket your lawn, they block sunlight and trap moisture, creating conditions for fungal diseases and grass suffocation. This is particularly common under mature oak, maple, or other large deciduous trees.

• Disease Prevention: Leaves from diseased trees should always be removed to prevent the spread of pathogens. Similarly, if your lawn already shows signs of fungal issues, removing all organic debris helps break the disease cycle.
• Aesthetic Preferences: Some homeowners prefer the clean, manicured look that complete removal provides, especially in formal landscape designs or high-visibility areas.
The Hybrid Approach
Many of our clients find success with a combination strategy where we mulch what we can into the lawn and remove the rest. This technique is often spread out over the season; in early fall, we’ll mulch the leaves, usually every week or every other week. As sweater weather settles in, we find ourselves needing to remove leaves because they are piling up too thickly. This balanced approach maximizes the benefits of organic matter while preventing the drawbacks of excessive coverage.
The most important tip is not to wait until all leaves have fallen. Regular maintenance throughout the season—whether mulching or removing—prevents overwhelming accumulation and maintains lawn health.
Professional Expertise Matters
While both mulching and removal can be DIY projects, professional lawn care services bring valuable expertise to the decision-making process. We assess your specific grass type, soil conditions, tree species, and overall landscape health to recommend the optimal approach for your property.
At Uncle Onion’s Lawn Care, we customize our fall services, such as leaf removal, aerating, overseeding, and fertilizing, based on each client’s unique needs, ensuring your lawn emerges healthy and vibrant come spring. Whether that means strategic mulching, complete removal, or a tailored combination approach, proper leaf management sets the foundation for next year’s growing season success.

The Flints Serve Up Family, Food, and Fellowship From Scratch:
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE
PHOTOS BY KAREN PRESECAN PHOTOGRAPHY & COURTESY OF CLAUDIA STOCKLI, GOLDEN HOUR MEDIA
In the heart of Spotsylvania County, Jackson and Brittany Flint have created something special – a blended family of seven that exemplifies the power of food, community service, and genuine connection. With five children ranging from teenagers to toddlers, their home buzzes with the energy of Mackenzie, Kai, Layla, Hannah, and Pierce, all of whom share a love for drawing, crafting, gaming, and soccer.
The couple’s love story began in the most fitting place imaginable for a future chef and entrepreneur: a local restaurant in Downtown Fredericksburg. But it was a particular moment that truly sealed their bond. “One of my fondest memories is when he met my two older kids [Mackenzie and Kai]. It’s cheesy to say love at first sight, but I feel as though we both felt an instant connection,” Brittany recalls. “Having kids makes you more cautious when you’re dating, and I didn’t want to introduce them to just anyone. When they finally met, it was effortless and only solidified our bond.”
Brittany’s path to culinary entrepreneurship began with a year of self-discovery after high school. Coming from a military family where both parents pursued higher education later in life, she found herself working as a hostess at a local steakhouse when clarity struck. “After working as a hostess in a local steakhouse, I realized that these were my people and cooking food comes naturally,” she explains. Her inspiration came from an unexpected source: “I remember coming home excited to share with my parents that I wanted to go to the same Culinary school Bobby Flay [I watched A LOT of Food Network as a teen] went to.” Her parents’ support was immediate, and soon they were touring culinary schools in New York.
Jackson’s journey in the food industry started when he began working in restaurants at 17. For two decades, he gained experience in kitchens across Virginia—including Blacksburg, Downtown Fredericksburg, Remington, Orange, and Spotsylvania—and worked his way up to the role of Executive Chef, a position he held for five years.
Today, both Jackson and Brittany channel their culinary passion and dedication into ensuring the growth of their two local businesses: CBF Catering and Family Meal Services. As a private chef specializing in intimate occasions and weekly meal prep, Brittany has built her reputation on supporting the local community and Jackson echoes those same values. Their approach to business focuses on “sourcing from small businesses and farms in the area,” creating a network of mutual support that strengthens the entire region.
The Flint family’s commitment to community extends far beyond their professional endeavors. Four years ago, when they moved into their current home in Spotsylvania, Brittany discovered an unexpected passion that would become both therapy and transformation. The property came with established garden beds, and soon after the birth of their youngest child, Brittany found the dirt calling to her: “After giving birth to our youngest, I felt a little restricted in what I could do. That’s when I started pulling weeds, digging up new beds, re-mulching and transplanting every plant I could get my hands on,” she shares. “Watching our outdoor area transform is so satisfying.”
This love of nurturing growth extends to her work with The Politigals, a grassroots organization that embodies the family’s commitment to service. “Although our mission is still in the works, we focus on supplying the unhoused with necessities, teen girls with sanitary supplies, and hosting politically focused meetings

with guest speakers to help educate women about what’s happening at the local level in our community,” Brittany explains. The group represents her belief in the power of local action and education to create meaningful change. Family life for the Flints includes beloved pets who have become integral family members. Recently, they experienced the loss of their two older lab mixes, Winslow and Stella, but their memory continues to be cherished. Their current menagerie includes Seaco, a gray female cat with a unique origin story. While working as the Catering Chef at the University of Mary Washington, Brittany encountered three abandoned kittens through a coworker. “I took one look at the grey one and knew I had to take her home. We named her Seaco after Seacobeck Hall,” she recalls. The family also includes Monty, a one-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer who “keeps our lives very interesting.”
The Flints’ deep connection to their community is rooted in familiarity and discovery. Both Jackson and Brittany grew up in Spotsylvania, and after a stint in Stafford, they’ve returned home. “I love the familiarity of this town while still discovering its treasures. I love how rural this area is, but also the proximity to DC and Richmond. I think it’s a great place to grow up,” Brittany reflects.
Their leisure time often involves exploring the rich history of their region. Brittany particularly enjoys “walking through the Battlefields, any will do, but especially love walking through the ones located by the Spotsylvania Courthouse.” She’s also excited about the evolving character of nearby Fredericksburg, noting that the area “is slowly becoming more and more diverse, which is an amazing thing” as the restaurant scene continues to grow. When it comes to vacation time, the family keeps things simple yet meaningful, enjoying “time at the beach when possible and weekends away in West Virginia.” These getaways provide opportunities for the entire family to recharge together, away from the busy schedules that come with running businesses and raising five active children.

Through Family Meal Services, Brittany continues to serve her community by offering “a seasonal, weekly menu to pre-order meals, sides, and add-ons for drop off the following week.” This service reflects her understanding that busy families need support, and her commitment to providing healthy, locally-sourced options makes that support more meaningful.
The Flint family represents the best of small-town American values: hard work, community service, and the belief that success is measured not just in business achievements, but in the positive impact one has on neighbors and friends. In a world that often feels disconnected, they’ve built a life centered on bringing people together – whether through a perfectly catered meal, a community garden project, or simply opening their home to those who need support.
Their story continues to unfold in Spotsylvania County, where five children grow up understanding that true success comes from serving others, and where two entrepreneurs prove daily that business and community service can flourish hand in hand.

WORLD-CLASS HEARING CARE: THE ASCENT AUDIOLOGY DIFFERENCE
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE

For over a decade, Ascent Audiology & Hearing has been Fredericksburg’s premier destination for comprehensive hearing healthcare. Founded by Dr. Paul Kuster in 2011, what began as a small clinic has evolved into a state-of-the-art practice serving thousands of patients with cutting-edge technology and personalized care.
Advanced Technology Meets Personal Touch
Ascent Audiology proudly utilizes Starkey Hearing Technologies, the most advanced hearing solutions available, and the only hearing aid manufacturer still based in the United States. These revolutionary devices feature industry-leading machine-learning systems that analyze and adapt to sound environments in real-time, mimicking natural brain processing.
The results are transformative: improved hearing in noisy environments, clearer conversations across all frequency ranges, enhanced directional sound recognition, and exceptional battery life extending up to 51+ hours. “After 30 years in this field, it still gives me goosebumps,” says Dr. Kuster. “When you’re helping someone reconnect with their world, you need to offer the best tools possible.”
A Unique Approach to Audiological Care
Dr. Kuster brings a distinctive perspective to hearing healthcare, drawing inspiration from an unexpected source: his musical creativity. Over two decades, he has created hundreds of songs, with 120 archived in the Library of Congress under his pseudonym “DoXoniK.” This creative process involves weaving musical loops into compositions, limited only by imagination and patience.
“This process is very much like how I program each patient’s hearing aids into a prescription that becomes unique to them,” explains Dr. Kuster. “Unfortunately, the vast majority of hearing aids are set using a static formula, and the computer basically guesses at the proper settings. Patients deserve better than a guess. In a sense, each of my patients becomes another of my compositions, and I get much pride and joy from that.”
The practice recently welcomed Dr. Ryan Malkiewicz, a second full-time doctor of audiology with over a decade of clinical experience and current
service in the U.S. Army Reserve. This expansion allows Ascent to accommodate more patients while maintaining its signature individualized care approach.
Modern Facility, Community Spirit
After nearly 14 years, Ascent relocated to a custom-designed space at 2119 Lafayette Boulevard, complete with dual soundproof testing suites and ample private parking. Patient reactions have been overwhelmingly positive—one longtime patient’s opening-day comment, “Nice new digs, Dr. Kuster,” has become the office catchphrase, complete with a celebratory bell.
Despite the upgrades, Dr. Kuster maintains perspective: “I still think of us as a little neighborhood office. We’re just a little neighborhood office with state-of-the-art everything and world-class care. Now, with everything in place, we’ve hit our stride again. Business is booming and our patients are happier than ever.”
The practice continues to expand partnerships with local care providers and integrate advanced diagnostic tools. Having served over 4,650 unique patients, Ascent maintains strong community ties through hearing aid donations to global missions and exceptional customer service.
Ascent Audiology accepts most federal insurance plans and Workers’ Compensation, offering zero-interest payment plans with approved credit. The office operates Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Saturday appointments available.
For appointments or more information, visit www.ascentfxbg.com or call 540-709-8865.

BUILDING THE VILLAGE:
GAD YOUTH CENTER FILLS CRITICAL GAP FOR LOCAL TEENS
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE PHOTOS COURTESY OF GAD AND KAREN PRESECAN PHOTOGRAPHY

In a world where youth programs often abandon children after age 12, Arline Gause saw a problem that demanded a solution. Her answer? GAD Youth Center, a faith-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting the often-overlooked teenage years when young people need guidance most.

“GAD is dedicated to bridging a critical gap in support services for families with youth ages 12-16, a time when many support services cease to accept youth after age 12,” explains Gause, the organization’s founder and CEO. This transitional period, she notes, presents unique challenges as teens face mounting social, emotional, and academic pressures while existing support systems disappear.
A Mission Born from Military Life
Gause’s inspiration for GAD Youth Center stems from her personal journey as a military wife, witnessing firsthand the inconsistencies in youth support across different communities.
“Relocating every three years exposed us to the wide disparities in education systems and the noticeable lack of consistent support for youth— especially those between the ages of 12 and 16,” she reflects.

The military lifestyle took the Gause family on extraordinary adventures—from living 10 miles from the Korean DMZ to weathering a volcanic eruption in Alaska, surviving Hurricane Iniki in Hawaii, and experiencing the 1989 San Francisco earthquake at the Presidio. Through each relocation, Gause observed how some communities thrived in supporting their youth while others left critical gaps unfilled.
“Time and again, I witnessed young people struggle to find stability, mentorship, and a safe space to grow during these formative years,” Gause recalls. Her own children’s success served as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people have proper support. “As I look at the success of our two children, they remind me that it was the ‘village’ that their father and I created around them that helped them navigate life and become who they are today.”
More Than an Acronym
GAD stands for “Generations AD – in the Year of Our Lord,” reflecting the organization’s faith-based foundation and belief that each generation serves a divine purpose. Incorporated in January 2023 and receiving 501(c)(3) status in March 2024, the organization operates on a powerful philosophy: strong generations begin with strong families.
“At GAD, we believe that in order to build strong, purpose-driven generations, we must first restore and strengthen the family foundation,” Gause
© Best Version Media
explains. The organization’s mission is elegantly simple yet profound: to “REBUILD and REDEFINE the village it will take to raise the next generations.”
This philosophy draws inspiration from W.E.B. DuBois, whose words resonate deeply with GAD’s approach: “A system of education is not one thing, nor does it have a single definite object, nor is it a mere matter of schools. Education is that whole system of human training within and without the school house walls, which molds and develops men.”
Comprehensive Support for Critical Years
GAD offers six key programs designed to address the multifaceted needs of teenagers: Academic Support, Career Assessment, College Prep, Culinary & Kitchen Skills, Life Skills Training, and Health and Wellness. Through these programs and job shadowing opportunities, youth gain crucial insight into their post-graduation options, whether college, trade school, or entering the workforce directly.
Each participant creates an Individual Development Plan (IDP) serving as a personalized roadmap for achieving their goals. This comprehensive approach ensures that teens aren’t just surviving their transitional years— they’re thriving and building foundations for successful futures.
The need is undeniable. GAD targets an initial audience of 306 students from Chancellor Middle, Chancellor High, Battlefield Middle, and Riverbend High Schools within the Spotsylvania County Public School District. This represents 9.5% of the 3,271 students currently enrolled in grades 6-10. Perhaps most telling is that “each year, over 500 youth are turned away from local youth and summer programs due to age limits and available slots, creating a critical gap in support.”
Purpose in Action
For Gause, leading GAD Youth Center represents more than professional fulfillment—it’s personal mission.
“What I enjoy most is living my purpose—knowing that I’m making a real difference and being part of the solution,” she shares. “This work is deeply personal to me; it’s not just what I do, it’s who I am.”
Her ultimate vision extends beyond immediate impact to generational change. “My greatest inspiration is the desire to see the next generation thrive. I want young people to grow up feeling seen, supported, and empowered—especially during the critical years that shape who they become.”
The long-term goal is beautifully ambitious: creating young adults who will “look back on Spotsylvania County as a place where they were wrapped in love and uplifted by community” and ultimately “return, plant roots, and raise their own families here.”
Building the Future
While GAD continues searching for a permanent location, the organization remains committed to its mission with support from local partners. Summer 2026 will bring a series of dynamic youth workshops focused on building confidence, life skills, and purpose.
As Gause emphasizes, “It truly takes a village!” Community members can learn more and get involved by visiting www.gad-youth.com, where they can sign up for volunteer opportunities and join GAD’s mission to empower youth toward prosperous, purpose-driven lives.
In an era when many institutions have failed to adequately support teenagers during their most formative years, GAD Youth Center stands as proof that one person’s vision, combined with community support, can rebuild the village our young people need to ensure they succeed.

GENTLE PAIN RELIEF FOR PETS: THE BENEFITS OF VETERINARY ACUPUNCTURE
BY DR. KATRINA SPIES, DVM, CHPV, CCRV, CVA, CVPP, COMFORT PAWS INTEGRATIVE VETERINARY CARE

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a time to spotlight the importance of recognizing and addressing pain in our animal companions. Many dogs and cats live with chronic pain, especially as they age or recover from injury. While modern medicine offers many effective treatments, integrative therapies like acupuncture are gaining recognition for their safe, natural ability to relieve pain and improve quality of life.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to both treat and prevent disease. It works by inserting very small, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of Qi (the body’s vital energy) and restore balance. When Qi is blocked or unbalanced, discomfort or disease can result.
In modern scientific terms, acupuncture points are located along channels or pathways rich in nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, and stimulating them can:
• Alleviate pain
• Reduce inflammation
• Improve circulation
• Stimulate nerve function
• Support the immune system
• Enhance the body’s natural healing processes
In short: acupuncture is safe and minimally invasive, and it helps relieve pain without the side effects of many medications. It works well alongside conventional treatments and clinical research supports its benefits in both human and animal medicine.
How Acupuncture Can Help Your Pet
Veterinary acupuncture is used to manage a wide range of conditions, including:
Musculoskeletal pain and injuries:
• ACL tears and soft tissue injuries
• Back or neck pain, including intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
• Osteoarthritis
• Hip and elbow dysplasia
• Post-surgical pain and healing
• Neurologic issues such as paralysis or weakness
Chronic illnesses and internal conditions:
• Digestive issues (vomiting, diarrhea, constipation)
• Liver or kidney disease
• Respiratory problems (asthma, chronic coughing)
• Seizures, anxiety, or cognitive decline
• Allergies and skin conditions
Acupuncture is often used to relieve pain and enhance mobility, manage chronic illness, and improve quality of life, especially in pets who can no longer tolerate or who fail to respond to traditional treatments and medications.
What to Expect During a Session
Each acupuncture session is tailored to your pet’s individual needs and temperament. After evaluating your pet, your veterinarian will gently place thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points. Most pets tolerate this very well, and many become relaxed or even sleepy during the session.
Treatments typically last 15–30 minutes, and most pets begin to show improvement after 3–5 sessions.

Finding a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist
When seeking acupuncture for your pet, always work with a licensed veterinarian who has completed specialized training in veterinary acupuncture. To earn certification as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA), veterinarians must complete extensive coursework, exams, case studies, and mentorship hours.
To learn more and find a certified veterinary acupuncturist near you, visit:
• American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture (AAVA): https://aaova.wildapricot.org
• International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS): https://www.ivas.org
• Chi University Alumni Directory: https://alumni.chiu.edu
Veterinary acupuncture is a powerful, gentle tool for managing pain and helping pets enjoy more comfortable lives. If your dog or cat is slowing down, struggling with mobility, or living with a chronic condition, acupuncture may be the key to helping them feel better again.

RECOVERING FROM SUN DAMAGE AFTER SUMMER FUN:
HOW COOLPEEL AND PICO LASER CAN HELP YOU GLOW AGAIN
BY REBECCA CHANDA, MS, APRN, HOUSE OF BLOOM MEDICAL AESTHETICS
Summer brings sunshine, pool days, beach vacations, and all the outdoor fun—but it also brings an increase in sun exposure that can take a toll on your skin. Even with the best SPF intentions, months of UV rays can lead to sunspots, dullness, fine lines, and uneven texture. If your skin is feeling the after-effects of summer, laser treatments in the fall like CoolPeel CO2 and Pico Laser can help restore a fresh, healthy glow.
The Reality of Sun Damage
Prolonged sun exposure breaks down collagen and accelerates skin aging. Common signs of sun damage include:
• Hyperpigmentation (brown spots and melasma)
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Rough texture or enlarged pores
• Redness and broken capillaries
• Overall skin dullness
These effects may not show up immediately, but over time, sun damage accumulates. That’s where advanced laser treatments step in—offering precision rejuvenation with minimal downtime.
CoolPeel: A Modern Take on CO2 Resurfacing
CoolPeel is a game-changing CO2 laser treatment that delivers the benefits of traditional ablative resurfacing—without the lengthy recovery time. By using a controlled, high-energy pulse that targets only the superficial layer of skin, CoolPeel removes damaged skin cells and stimulates collagen production. Why choose CoolPeel after summer?
• It safely treats sunspots, fine lines, and texture
• Minimal downtime (usually just 2-4 days of redness)
• Improves skin tone and overall clarity
• Tightens and refreshes the skin from within CoolPeel is ideal for patients looking to undo visible sun damage while preparing their skin for the cooler, drier months ahead.

Pico Laser: Gentle Yet Powerful Rejuvenation
Pico Laser uses ultra-short pulses of energy (in picoseconds) to shatter pigment and stimulate collagen with no heat damage to the surrounding skin. It’s safe for a wide range of skin types and is especially effective for treating:
• Sunspots and pigmentation
• Acne scars
• Melasma
• Uneven skin tone

JAMIE SNYDER AND HIS THERAPY DOG SOPHIE
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE
When Jamie Snyder retired three years ago, he had no idea that daily trips to the dog park would lead to a calling that would touch countless lives throughout the Fredericksburg community. Today, Snyder and his Bernedoodle Sophie form a certified therapy team, bringing comfort and joy to hospitals, schools, and shelters across the region.
Snyder, who has called the Fredericksburg area home since 2006, worked for the federal government in the DC area before settling into retirement. “I have been in the community since 2006,” he explains. “When looking for a place to live, we needed a place we liked and could afford. So, Fredericksburg became our home and, me, a commuter.”
The journey to becoming a therapy team began organically during those regular visits to the Spotsy Dog Park. “I was taking daily trips to the dog park on Gordon Road and enjoying the friends I was making,” Snyder recalls. “During these trips, Sophie would check on everyone upon our arrival, and it was suggested that she would make a great therapy dog. I looked into it, and a month later, we were on the path to becoming a therapy team.”
As part of the Blue Gray Therapy Dog Group, Snyder and Sophie maintain an impressive schedule of community service. They walk through the entire Fredericksburg hospital once a week as part of the Mary Washington HealthCare team, recently adding the Oncology Center to their rounds.
Through the “Paws for Reading” program, they visit libraries and schools where children read aloud to Sophie, helping young readers build confidence. They also serve meals to people experiencing homelessness at the Masonic Lodge twice a month and provide stress relief for college students during finals week.
And, sometimes, just the presence of this canine-human duo is enough to turn around someone’s day. “This week, I walked into a patient’s room at the hospital. She waved me in from the door, but she couldn’t speak. I brought Sophie to her, and she had such a big smile, and a big tear rolled down her face. The joy and heartfelt emotions are just amazing.”
Their mission is simple: “Our job is to bring a smile to someone’s face, a little joy to their day,” Snyder explains. The biggest challenge they face is common

to many volunteers: “Our biggest challenge is time. We do get pulled in different directions, and I would like to be able to do it all, but there is not enough time in the day to get to it all.”
The Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge #4, where Snyder is a member, has embraced Sophie as part of their community. “As I was training So phie, I asked the brothers if they minded that I brought her to lodge, meetings, or events. They did not mind and actually encouraged it, and she has become a staple at the lodge.”

Looking forward, Snyder hopes to expand their reach. “I would like to see Spotsylvania open up to the Paws for Reading program. We have teams in almost all of the Stafford County schools, but none in Spotsy.”
For those inspired to make a difference, Snyder’s advice is encouraging: “Sophie and I got started with just a suggestion. If it is something you are interested in and have the drive, anything is possible.” Snyder credits the leadership of Kim Frazer, who founded Blue Gray Therapy Dogs, and Christie Thompkins, who runs the Paws for Reading program, saying, “These ladies do an amazing job.”
Through their dedication, Jamie and Sophie continue proving that sometimes the most significant community impact comes from the simplest acts of kindness.

RHS FALL SPORTS PRE-SEASON
BY LIYA ZEWDU PHOTO COURTESY OF RHS CHEERLEADERS

Liya Zewdu is a sophomore at Riverbend High School. She actively contributes to the school newspaper, with a focus on highlighting student perspectives and advocating for change. Liya also plays a key role in supporting students in special education through a basketball program, showing her commitment to inclusivity and teamwork. A proud member of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the Junior Council for Cancer Kids First, Liya is deeply involved in her school community. Outside of her academic and extracurricular pursuits, she enjoys watching anime, reading books, exploring the outdoors, and spending quality time with family and friends. Liya aspires to pursue a career in Journalism, driven by her love for storytelling and creating meaningful connections through writing.
While most students are enjoying their summer, fall athletes at Riverbend High School are already hard at work preparing for the upcoming Fall season. These students are spending their mornings and afternoons training, conditioning, and staying in shape. From football to cheer, these teams are already putting in the work to make sure that they are ready when the season kicks off.
One of the teams that has stood out this summer has been the Football team. Players have been consistently showing up for workouts and practices. Rising Sophomore Adrien Picot described what a typical day of off-season conditioning looks like.
“A typical day for the team includes a dynamic warm-up starting with stretches and light jobs to warm up their muscles,” Picot stated.
After that, they split up into two groups (JV and Varsity). Varsity goes to the weight room first, where they’ve been doing circuits to keep their heart rates up. While JV is on the field working on technique and plays, after an hour, they switch.
Picot reflects on the summer so far, which consists of youth camps, 7-on7 scrimmages, and opportunities to fine-tune skills. “Our most recent scrimmage was at Norfolk State University, where we won their first annual 7-on-7 championship,” he said.
Additionally, Picot recently participated in the Spotsy Cougars Youth Football Camp, where he and his fellow teammates taught younger athletes the basics of the game. “It was a great experience, we split up into position groups, taught the kids some drills, and told them about ourselves at the end,” Picot stated.
While off-season conditioning and scrimmages have been a big part of preparing for the upcoming fall season, Picot shares what he’s enjoyed so
far this summer. “My highlight of the offseason has been truly fine-tuning my craft to be the best I can be while competing and bonding with my teammates,” Picot said.
While the football athletes have been focused on improving their game and building team chemistry, the cheer team has also been working hard this summer, preparing to bring support to the sidelines this fall.
Torrianna Johnson, a rising junior, shared what the team’s offseason has looked like.
“Our practices usually start with jogging around the parking lot and doing dynamic stretches to target all the major muscle groups. We do strength training like push-ups, squats, lunges, and endurance exercises like sprinting and burpees. We also spend time focusing on technique and coordination, for example, like jump kicks, which allow us to focus on our form,” Johnson stated.
Beyond training and conditioning, the cheerleaders have been busy this summer with fundraisers and events that benefit the community, like camps. The team has hosted a “Bear Cub Camp” which lasted from July 28th-30th, where over 100 young campers learned cheers, chants, stunting, and tumbling. Campers also have the opportunity to perform at a varsity football game alongside the RHS cheerleaders.
“Fundraisers are actually a big part of the offseason. We use Snap Raise, which helps sports teams raise funds quickly from people donating (usually family and friends).” Johnson said.
On July 26th, the cheer team hosted their annual car wash at the Panera by Chancellors Crossing. Previously, they had a vendor sale on July 12th where they raised a total of $4,300.

Johnson said, “The highlight of my offseason has been simply getting to know my team better, the stunting, prep we do for the upcoming pep rally, and having the opportunity to work with new people.” She admires the welcoming community and the strong support system she has. Fall athletes at Riverbend have put in a lot of work this past summer. From football practices and youth camps to cheer conditioning and fundraisers, these students are doing a lot on and off the field and court. They’re building strong teams and making a significant impact in the community. With the season coming up soon, all their hard work is going to show. It’s looking like a promising fall season ahead for our fall athletes.
