Over the past year, Neighbors of Chancellorsville has had the pleasure of introducing you to some of the incredible individuals, families, and events that make our community special. From inspiring entrepreneurs and dedicated volunteers to families who’ve built rich traditions here, each story reflects the heart and spirit of Chancellorsville. As we celebrate our anniversary, we invite you to take a look back at the wonderful people who’ve been featured and how they contribute to making our area such a vibrant and welcoming place to live:
Corey and Meghan Colson, both registered nurses, met in a hospital’s critical care unit, where their shared passion for healthcare and leadership led to a loving partnership. Celebrating ten years together, they have raised three daughters—Kendall, a volleyball player and aspiring actress; Holland, a budding ballerina with dreams of becoming a veterinarian; and Lana, a swimmer and gymnast with a love for unicorns. The family enjoys quality time together, whether through spontaneous adventures or relaxing at home, cherishing simple moments that create lasting memories.
Living in Spotsylvania County, the Colsons embrace the beauty of nature surrounding their home and value the traditions of their past while creating new family memories. Their successful business, BallistiX Coatings & Sealers, is a tribute to Corey’s decorated Marine father, and the couple is dedicated to supporting their community and honoring military service. They believe in the importance of service, gratitude, and fostering a strong sense of community, always ready to lend a hand to those in need. The Colsons welcome anyone they meet, embodying their belief that there’s always room for one more in their lives.
somed into a deep connection during their first date in downtown Fredericksburg. Despite their initial long-distance relationship—David being a Marine stationed in North Carolina and Krista embarking on a trip to Europe—the couple’s bond grew stronger, leading to a day spent together in Germany at a medieval castle. After a year of “geobacheloring,” the couple settled down in Fawn Lake, where they now enjoy life with their seven children. Each child has their own unique passion, from wrestling and skateboarding to theater and horseback riding, while the youngest, Finn, has already traveled to 10 countries with his adventure-loving parents.
The Crawley family’s life is marked by a love for travel, family, and adventure. Krista works as counsel and VP of Human Resources at Ademia, while David, now retired after 20 years of military service, is pursuing a pilot’s license. The couple thrives on seeking new experiences, and even launched a business, FXBG Axes, after enjoying a date at the axe-throwing venue. When not exploring new destinations, they enjoy the vibrant community life in Fawn Lake, with its social events, outdoor activities, and peaceful setting. Their love for each other and their adventurous spirit continue to guide them as they embrace every opportunity for new experiences together.
Josie and Ed Watson’s story is one of love, resilience, and community. Ed worked at the White House for 37 years, serving as foreman of the carpentry shop, while Josie helped hundreds of families through her mortgage career. Despite some early wedding-day mishaps, the couple has been happily married since and has two wonderful sons, Kyle and Bryce. The twins are active in the community, running their business, Grand Slam Plumbing, and coaching local youth sports.
Now retired and living in Fawn Lake, Josie and Ed enjoy a quieter life, surrounded by nature and a support-
ive community. They remain involved by sponsoring local programs, volunteering, and spending time with their grandchildren. The Watsons cherish the legacy they’ve built—rooted in family, service, and a deep connection to their home in Fawn Lake.
The Lethbridge brothers—Zach, Matt, and Jake—embody a shared dedication to service, family, and community in Fredericksburg. Following in their father Mark’s footsteps, a Naval Academy graduate and Naval Flight Officer, all three brothers pursued military careers: Zach and Matt as Marine Corps officers and Jake as a Naval Flight Officer. After completing their military service, they each chose to settle in Fredericksburg, where they united their diverse skills and experiences to launch Kitchen Tune-Up Fredericksburg & Stafford in 2021.
Kitchen Tune-Up specializes in kitchen remodels and wood cabinetry rejuvenation, offering services that blend craftsmanship and customer focus.
Beyond their business, the brothers are rooted in Fredericksburg, appreciating the area’s natural beauty, family-friendly environment, and rich history. Zach and his wife Rosemary, Matt and his wife Blair, and Jake, the proud “Cool Uncle,” are raising their families here, enjoying local attractions and outdoor adventures. The Lethbridges also look forward to future family trips, having previously bonded over visits to Glacier National Park.
Together, the brothers have built both a thriving business and a strong family presence in Fredericksburg, exemplifying how values of service, hard work, and unity can create lasting impact on a community.
The Owens family is a powerful example of resilience, faith, and dedication to both their family and community. Nathan and Karie Owens met in college and have since built a life around their shared faith and service to others, both in the U.S. and abroad. Their missionary work in Cameroon, West Africa, tested their strength, especially when Karie faced life-threatening illness, yet their unwavering belief carried them through. Together, they raised nine children, including two sets of twins, and have continued their passion for service while running their family-owned business, NK Floors. Nathan, skilled in flooring from a young age, leads the business, while Karie and their older children also contribute.
Now residing in the Chancellorsville area, the Owens family remains active in their local church, Faith Baptist, and continues to serve others through their business and ministries. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, their faith and sense of purpose have kept them strong and united. Their children are pursuing various passions, from education and ministry to nursing and athletics, reflecting the diverse talents and interests nurtured within their resilient family. As the Owens family looks ahead, they inspire those around them with their commitment to faith, family, and hard work.
The Alghabra family, consisting of Beata, Jalal, and their children embodies unity and unwavering support in both their personal and professional lives. After meeting through mutual friends 23 years ago, they have raised amazing children, each pursuing their own admirable goals. Ameen is on the path to becoming a helicopter pilot, while Lena studies science at the University of Virginia, appreciating her family’s constant support. Beata has realized her dream of owning Synergy HomeCare of Fredericksburg, with Jalal as her steadfast partner and administrator. Their son also plays a significant role in the business, caring
for veterans and enhancing the family’s commitment to serving others.
Originally from North Carolina, the Alghabra family has embraced their life in Fredericksburg, valuing the community’s charm, excellent public schools, and strong local healthcare. They enjoy the area’s beauty, culture, and close-knit neighborhood, where friendly connections abound. With shared passions and a love for each other, they find joy in family moments, whether at home or exploring new places together. Their dedication to making a positive impact in the community through their business and personal endeavors showcases the strength of their family bond and their desire to support others.
Kim Hicks, known to many as “Miss Kim,” is a woman of grace, resilience, and fashion who has deeply impacted the Fredericksburg community. Born in Savannah, her Southern roots and family-oriented upbringing shaped her journey, especially in raising five children alongside her beloved husband, Bennie. A homemaker for most of her life, Kim also took on various jobs, from working in a hospital to assisting her husband with carpentry work. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her own family to neighborhood children, many of whom still keep in touch.
A lover of fashion, Kim developed her own style early on, learning to sew clothes for herself and her family. To this day, she is known for her impeccable taste, whether shopping at high-end boutiques or thrifting at local stores. Her love for dressing up has inspired her children and grandchildren, who share her fashion sense and continue the traditions she instilled in them. Beyond fashion, Kim enjoys travel, spending time with family, and attending local events in Fredericksburg. Though she now lives with her daughter and son-in-law, Yvette and Peter Blake, Kim continues to stay active, volunteering and participating in community activities. Her vibrant spirit and love for life are as strong as ever, leaving a lasting legacy of love, style, and community involvement.
With five vibrant children—Savannah (11), Charlotte “Charlie” (10), Harper (8), Chase (6), and Johnny (4)— and their foster dog Nala, their home is a lively hub of love and laughter. John, a retired Marine now with the Department of Justice, and Jen, a real estate agent, share a commitment to their careers and family, fostering a supportive environment for each child’s unique interests and talents.
Harper, who faces challenges due to SYNGAP1, a rare genetic condition, has inspired the family to advocate for awareness and support within the special needs community. They recently installed a pool to aid her therapy, showcasing their dedication to her well-being. The Cooks treasure their vibrant neighborhood, participating in local events and building strong connections with neighbors. Grateful for the community’s support, they embody resilience and love as they navigate life and raise their children together.
The Fawn Lake Triathlon, now in its 15th year, stands out as a family-centric event amid a sea of competitive races in the region. Race Director Jeff Kramer envisions the triathlon as more than just a race; it’s an opportunity for families to train together and bond, fostering togetherness through the shared experience of preparing for the event. Participants like Dustin Beall and Amy Huesgen emphasize the unique joy of competing alongside their children, creating lasting memories and encouraging one another throughout the training process. The event features various races for different age groups, promoting fitness and camaraderie within the community.
This annual triathlon also benefits numerous local charities, relying on the support of over 100 volunteers from the Fawn Lake community to ensure its success. Last year, the event raised $30,000 for the Families of the Wounded Fund and other local organizations, reinforcing its commitment to giving back. The Fawn Lake Triathlon culminates in a community celebration, complete with an awards ceremony and pizza party, highlighting the collective spirit of participants and volunteers alike. With its emphasis on family, fitness, and philanthropy, the triathlon has become a cherished tradition in the Fawn Lake community, uniting residents in a shared passion for active lifestyles and mutual support.
Lauren Jordan and Erin Reid’s friendship blossomed into a business partnership that led to the creation of Verdant Wellness, a thriving wellness business focused on holistic health. Both women, who first connected as neighbors, share a background in healthcare, which laid the foundation for their collaboration. Erin is a Family Nurse Practitioner with a deep passion for patient care, while Lauren’s expertise as a nurse practitioner complements Erin’s skills perfectly.
Their families have embraced life in Fawn Lake, appreciating the community and outdoor opportunities the area provides. Both Erin and Lauren value travel and enjoy time with their families, often balancing their professional responsibilities with active family lives. Lauren’s children, Grace, Ashton, and Jonathan, and Erin’s children, Grant, Emelia, and Beckett, are deeply involved in sports, church, and other activities, supported by their mothers’ commitment to health and well-being. Through their friendship and shared
values, Lauren and Erin have built a flourishing wellness practice while nurturing their families and contributing to their local community.
Jason Haag’s life is a powerful example of resilience, service, and family devotion. As a Marine Corps veteran and founder of Leashes of Valor (LOV), a nonprofit providing service dogs to wounded veterans, Jason’s journey highlights both personal and professional strength. His three children—Tristan, Colby, and Peyton—remain at the center of his life, and his bond with his service dog, Maverick, underscores the healing power of companionship.
Jason’s dedication to Leashes of Valor reflects his mission to support fellow veterans, while his commitment to his family, including his children’s mother, Elizabeth, remains strong. Despite a busy schedule, Jason makes time for his children and his competitive golfing hobby, while also cherishing the local community’s overwhelming support for LOV. Through his work, Jason continues to impact veterans’ lives while maintaining his role as a devoted father and leader.
Dana Atkins and Kim Reynolds have been close friends since seventh grade, and their bond has flourished into a successful business partnership with Love Buzz Mobile Bar in Fredericksburg, Virginia. After reconnecting as adults and living just a mile apart, they launched their mobile bar business, transforming a 1969 Shasta camper into a stylish event centerpiece. Their complementary strengths—Dana managing operations and Kim overseeing event shopping and budgeting—help their business thrive, while their mutual passion for fitness and creative cocktails deepens their connection.
They enjoy contributing to the community through events and volunteer work, including support for the local SPCA Fur Ball. Anchored by a lifelong friendship, Dana and Kim’s business is flourishing, and they continue to create lasting memories together both personally and professionally.

Ten years ago, in 2014, the Greater Rappahannock (VA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated was chartered as the 277th chapter of the organization. Established in 1946, The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation and one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations. Its mission is to enrich, sustain, and ensure the cultural and economic survival of African Americans and other people of African descent. The organization comprises accomplished, dedicated women who are active in their communities. Members are leaders, role models, mentors, activists, and volunteers, making “Links” not just a symbol of friendship but also a chain of purposeful service.
The chartering of the Greater Rappahannock Chapter was a significant milestone, celebrated by the 31 founding members who aligned their philanthropy with the mission of The Links, Incorporated. As we fast forward to 2024, we reflect on a decade of accomplishments and service.
The chapter’s first signature program was Children Achieving Excellence through Early Literacy: Smart Start Link 2 Life. This initiative successfully targeted four-year-old children and their families, providing resources, workshops, and activities to promote kindergarten readiness through literacy, health, and well-being.
The current signature program, Linking Youth to Excellence (LYTE) – a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education initiative – has earned the chapter national recognition. The Links, Incorporated awarded the chapter the National Award for Outstanding Transformational Program in 2018 and 2021. Through this program, middle school girls participate in hands-on workshops that encourage innovative, design-based thinking to prepare for future career opportunities.
Over the past decade, the chapter has awarded over $85,000 in academic scholarships to deserving students pursuing higher education from the Greater Rappahannock area.
The chapter’s premier fundraising events, Hit the Links Golf Classic and the Greater Rappahannock Holiday Sparkle, have become community favorites, offering opportunities to expand outreach and service throughout the region.
In addition to these events, the chapter proudly partners with organizations such as the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign, Loisann’s Hope House, the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, Fredericksburg Head Start, Stafford National Night Out, the Fredericksburg Chapter of the League of Women Voters (LWV), and the Boys & Girls Club of the Rappahannock Region, to name a few.
Over the last ten years, Greater Rappahannock Chapter members have collectively contributed more than 23,000 documented hours of community service. Whether reading to elementary students, participating in toy drives, volunteering at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) seminars, or serving meals at homeless shelters, we are united by a shared commitment to transform our community through service. The organization hopes to continue to “Celebrate, Elevate, and Serve” in the decades to come.
At the time of publication, the Greater Rappahannock Chapter was in full planning mode for their 10th Anniversary Celebration “Rhapsody in White” Jazz Brunch on November 2 and featured live music by the Progeny Band. Stay tuned for more events and check out all this organization has to offer at grva.websitepro.hosting.
BY KARIE OWENS PHOTOS COURTESY OF NK FLOORS
It’s been glaring you in the face, becoming more evident at every glance. Wood planks are dented and slipping out of place, chips in your tile are now fracturing and cracking, and the once unnoticed “pet stains” are screaming out for attention. Sound familiar? Replacing floors can be exhausting and expensive. Here are some aspects to consider. How is the subfloor? The subfloor must be addressed first. This includes rotting wood, squeaks, and leveling issues. The subfloor should be sturdy and flat (not sloped). If the subfloor is uneven, sloped, or has large waves and gaps, correcting it is imperative before installing the new floor. If a complete repair is limited, then carpet is the best choice. If you can adjust the subfloor with plywood, luan, OSB, or flooring self-leveler compound, then you could select luxury vinyl plank, hardwood, or tile after the process of subfloor repair is complete. During a free in-home estimate, NK Floors will pull back a vent to check the subfloor. A flooring company with integrity will correct subfloor issues and not install new flooring on a flawed subfloor.
Is there moisture? Each type of flooring has an ideal moisture content for sustainability. Preferably, a moisture reading test should be conducted on the plywood subfloor or concrete slab. Moisture and water vapor can cause bubbles, delamination, rotting, and sinking. Excess moisture in wood floors can cause wood to pull away from the
subfloor, and the planks may discolor. Excess moisture will cause the tile to shift and loosen. For laminate, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), luxury vinyl tile (LVT), and flooring with locking systems, it helps to have a moisture-bearer. Generally, for basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms, choose LVP, LVT, tile, or sheet vinyl.
How will the space be used? Tile and vinyl are excellent choices for high-traffic areas such as kitchens and hallways. Hardwood (natural or engineered), vinyl, and carpet are best for bedrooms. Hardwood and LVP accommodate dining and living spaces. LVP and carpet come in a variety of waterproof and pet-friendly flooring. If noise reduction is a consideration, carpet and LVP/LVT with a cork back are excellent choices.
What is your budget? Use carpet, vinyl, and laminate if you need less expensive flooring. Hardwood and natural stone can be more costly. Find a flooring company that sells quality products at affordable prices, and you can buy a better product at a lower cost. At NK Floors, we work with our customers to find the best product for their budget, not sacrificing quality for affordability.
Now that you know the parameters of your flooring needs, you are ready to search for the colors, styles, and selections of your dreams!

November is recognized as National Senior Pet Awareness Month and National Adopt a Senior Pet Month. This month-long observance focuses on highlighting the special needs of senior pets and encouraging their adoption into caring homes. As our furry companions age, they deserve our utmost attention and care to ensure they lead happy and fulfilling lives in their later years.
Caring for senior pets involves more than just routine veterinary visits; it requires understanding the physical and mental changes they experience. Older pets may face mobility challenges, changes in sight or hearing, dental issues, and a higher likelihood of developing chronic health conditions such as arthritis or cognitive dysfunction.
Veterinary care is essential for maintaining the health of senior pets. Preventive measures like routine blood tests, screening for signs of pain and arthritis, and dental examinations can identify potential health concerns early on. Consulting with your veterinarian about dietary adjustments and appropriate supplements can help meet your pet’s specific requirements as they age.
Assessing your senior pet’s quality of life is equally important. This can be evaluated through various factors, including mobility, appetite, hydration, pain, and overall well-being. A number of Quality of Life Scales are available to help pet owners gauge their pets’ condition. These scales can also facilitate conversations between family members about lifestyle modifications or treatments needed to enhance comfort. Additionally, modifying the home environment can significantly enhance a senior pet’s quality of life. Non-slip surfaces reduce the risk of falls, while ramps and pet stairs facilitate easier movement. For senior cats, offering multiple litter boxes with low-profile entrances can help them maintain good litter box habits. Supportive orthopedic bedding can relieve joint discomfort, and elevating food and water bowls allows for more comfortable dining experiences. Installing nightlights can help pets with visual impairments navigate safely during nighttime hours.
Socialization and playtime with senior pets should be tailored to their physical capabilities. Gentle walks, short sessions with soft toys, and engaging puzzle toys can keep them mentally stimulated without causing excessive fatigue. Brief
training sessions not only reinforce commands but also strengthen the bond between you and your pet. Additionally, gentle brushing or massages, combined with quiet cuddle time, can offer both comfort and enjoyment, creating a nurturing environment for your beloved companion.
This November, take a moment to celebrate and advocate for the care and adoption of senior pets. With the right care and love, these loyal companions can continue to bring happiness and fulfillment to our lives for years to come. Let’s unite in our efforts to ensure that every senior pet finds a loving forever home where they can thrive and live out their best lives!

Fredericksburg is brimming with picturesque spots that provide the perfect backdrop for your fall family portraits. Whether you’re looking for the classic charm of historic landmarks or the natural beauty of parks and gardens, here are some of the best local spots to capture those precious moments.
• Chatham Manor- For families seeking a mix of history and scenic beauty, Chatham Manor is a must-visit. Overlooking the Rappahannock River, this historic site offers stunning views of Fredericksburg’s skyline, framed by the fiery colors of autumn. The manor itself, with its stately brick architecture and sprawling gardens, adds a touch of elegance to any photo. BY DAVID STEWART, DOMINION SEPTIC
Maintaining a healthy septic system isn’t always top of mind for homeowners—but it should be. While it’s no fun paying fees for regular septic system maintenance every few years, the alternative is far worse. Replacing or repairing a malfunctioning septic system starts in the thousands of dollars and goes up from there. Far too often, improperly maintained septic systems can torpedo a home’s value, causing homeowners to sell at an unexpected loss.
Faulty septic systems can do more than just cost money—they can put your health and the health of your neighbors at risk. A bad septic system will not properly remove the pollutants in wastewater, causing pollution and health risks to your community. Taking care of your septic system doesn’t need to be a hassle. Following these simple tips I’ve learned over years of dealing with septic systems professionally will put you ahead of the game and on your way to making sure you have a healthy, functioning, and long-lasting septic system.
Cutting corners on septic system maintenance is a big no-no. Malfunctioning septic systems wreak havoc on home values and often cause owners to sell their homes at a loss. Hiring a reputable specialist to do a thorough inspection before buying a home is a critical step. A basic inspection is not enough — going with an expert before buying can help you avoid huge financial losses.
You wouldn’t put strange liquids in your gas tank—why do you pour them into your septic system? A good rule of thumb is to avoid anything that wouldn’t pass easily through a human body. In particular, fats, oils, and greases can cause major damage to a septic system, so pouring these down the drain should be avoided at all costs. While washing clothes is unavoidable, different laundry detergents affect the septic system in different ways. Fabric softeners, antibacterial products, and scent beads are also terrible for the septic system and should be avoided if possible.
Drainfields are where the water from your septic tank goes to drain into the soil. They are critical to a properly functioning septic system and should not be neglected. While no special care needs to be taken with drainfields, there are certain practices that should be avoided. Dominion Septic recommends not building anything—like a shed, for example—on the drainfield, as this can cause unforeseen issues. Trees in particular are to be avoided, as their roots can be extremely destructive to the drainfield. Problems caused by tree roots can be costly to solve, so it’s better to avoid planting them near the drainfield in the first place if possible. Maintain your drainfield area with grass and avoid irrigation systems.
Whether you’re engaging in regular septic system maintenance, installing a new septic system, or repairing or replacing a faulty system, it’s important to only work with qualified specialists. Be sure that the specialist has ample experience working with septic systems, and check that they have all the proper licensures. Nothing can replace experience—keep expertise and work history in mind and ask neighbors and others around the community about their experiences. Finding the right specialist can save you a lot of money and headaches in the long run.
Proper septic system maintenance is critical for homeownership. If your septic system is damaged, there’s nothing to do but to call a qualified professional to evaluate it and perform a repair. By following the tips laid out here, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying the benefits of a well-functioning and long-lasting septic system.

This school year’s first official senior activity took place on a bright and sunny Saturday morning—perfect weather for painting a parking spot! For the senior class of 2025, this event marked the start of a year full of fun. Painting a parking spot is an eagerly anticipated senior tradition, with excitement building as students sketch their designs and gather their supplies.
This year, about 50 students participated, each showcasing a wide range of designs. Some were simple and classic, others highly creative, and some were just plain funny.
Senior Aleena Patel drew inspiration from one of her favorite childhood shows, Phineas and Ferb. “In every episode, they say, ‘Hey, where’s Perry?’ So I just added my name to it!” Patel explains. “I also found it funny because if I’m absent, my parking spot will be sitting there saying, ‘Hey, where’s Aleena?’”
Patel discovered the design on Pinterest and loved the depiction of baby Perry the platypus, calling it cute and nostalgic. She bought paint in various colors, along with plenty of brushes and rollers. Proud of her artistic skills, Patel notes, “Everything you see is freehanded; we didn’t use any stencils.” With the help
of a close friend, she completed her masterpiece in two and a half hours. “We made a lot of fun memories while painting it together,” she adds.
Across the lot, Daphne Martin worked on her aesthetic design, which combined several elements she loves into a collage.
“I love the sun and wanted to paint one, but I also wanted to include a Mac Miller quote or album cover because I’ve loved his music throughout high school, so I ended up combining them all,” she shares.
Martin also opted for a freehand approach, using tape to section off her design and chalk to sketch it out before painting. She spent about three hours on her spot, carefully working on each part of the collage. “My favorite part was the sun because I got to use a lot of shading, which I was surprised worked on pavement,” Martin says.
With an entire year of fun activities ahead, this parking spot painting event was just the beginning for the seniors. One thing is clear from this year’s event: Riverbend is full of artistic talent and creative minds!

Each year on the last Saturday of September, Riverbend High School Stadium buzzes with activity from sunrise to early evening. High school bands from across the region converge on Riverbend to compete in the Emerald Classic, a marching band competition organized by the Riverbend Emerald Sound and Guard. RHS band director Jennifer Lewis states, “All bands receive feedback aimed at providing the directors and students with ways to improve their performance as the season progresses.”
Senior and drum captain Kaeden Wagner shares, “The event allows band members to watch and encourage other bands while also giving them a chance to see some really amazing performances!” Wagner’s involvement in the RHS marching band is shaping his future; he plans to attend James Madison University and join the Marching Royal Dukes. He also aspires to participate in DCI, the professional marching band circuit, after high school.
Emerald Classic awards are presented to the top three bands in each class, along with captain awards in specific categories, including Best Percussion and Best Visuals. This year marked the largest Emerald Classic to date, featuring 18 visiting bands and an exhibition performance by the Marching Virginians of Virginia Tech.
Junior colorguard member and Equipment Manager Addison Fiore expressed her excitement prior to the event, stating, “This year is my first Emerald Classic, and I’m most excited to see the bands perform their unique shows and connect with friends from other bands, but most importantly, to have fun!”
While the competition is impressive, it wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of the students, their parents, and the event sponsors. Lewis notes, “Apart from all the students who practice for hours each week, it was amazing to see the parents of the band students working together to support their kids.” She explains that parents arrived at the school before sunrise to prepare breakfast for the band members and continued working tirelessly throughout the competition to direct traffic, sell concessions, and manage equipment.
Fiore adds, “Seeing everyone so passionate about the same thing I am has impacted me greatly. The whole band came together to host this big competition, and it ran so smoothly—all thanks to everyone’s overwhelming support!”
The event’s success was also due to the generous sponsorship of Shore United Bank, Brooke Miller Real Estate, Burke and Burke Insurance, Simventions, Minuteman Press, and Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes. Food trucks of all types contributed to making the Emerald Classic as amazing as anticipated.
Lewis concludes, “Thousands of hours of work were on display on our campus, and that’s one of the best aspects of high school marching band: students and parents collaborating to create something special for others to enjoy.”

Fall is one of my favorite times to make a few cocktails and enjoy the cooler weather outside-- especially once it’s cold enough to don my favorite hoodie or sweater. I love just sitting and appreciating the cooler nights by the fire pit chatting with friends, so I am offering up a few new favorites-- “sweata weatha sippers” if you will-- for you to try along with some of my homemade simple syrups.
Here’s a little fun take on your “basic” fall flavor, pumpkin, and should prove to turn any pumpkin spice hater into a fan— at least for fall.
• 3 shakes of your bitters of choice (I suggest angostura)
• 2 drops of 80/20 saline (my secret trick for a smooth drink)
• 1/2 oz of pumpkin spice syrup
• 2 oz of Maker’s Mark (or your bourbon of choice for cocktails, anything 80 proof or above)
Garnish with a orange peel and a cinnamon stick (if that’s your jam). The pumpkin isn’t overbearing at all.
Emily’s Homemade Pumpkin Syrup
• 3/4 cup brown sugar
• 3/4 cup water
• 2 TBS pumpkin spice mix
• 3/4 cup of pumpkin puree
• Add cinnamon and cloves in if you want a little extra “fall” Boil to a boil for 3 minutes and simmer and double-strain
Spiced Apple Old Fashioned
• 3 shakes of your bitters of choice (I suggest angostura)
• 2 drops of 80/20 saline (my secret trick for a smooth drink)
• 1/2 oz of spiced apple syrup
• 2 oz of Maker’s Mark (or your bourbon of choice for cocktails, anything 80 proof or above)
Garnish with a orange peel and a cinnamon stick (if that’s your jam)
Emily’s Homemade Spiced Apple Syrup
• 1 cup brown sugar
• 1 cup water
• 1 cup spiced apple cider
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 1 honey crisp apple, sliced
Bring to a boil for 5-10 minutes (turn off) and let it sit for 30 minutes; I didn’t strain this one, I just enjoyed the apples.

Is your family up for an early morning of fun? Do you enjoy family-friendly races and free swag from local businesses? If so, the YMCA Turkey Trot is the perfect event for you! Now in its 32nd year, the YMCA Turkey Trot will take place on Wednesday, November 23rd, and Thursday, November 24th. Known for its scenic course and exciting festivities, this beloved event attracts both runners and non-runners from across Virginia. This year, the event will feature three races: the Tot Trot, the Kids Mile, and the 5K.
The Tot Trot, a new addition this year, is designed for the youngest participants, ages 2 to 5. This fun, non-timed quarter-mile run will take place the evening before the main events, on Wednesday, November 23rd, at 4:00 p.m. on the James Monroe High School track. It’s sure to be a delightful experience for all the littlest runners, full of smiles and excitement!
Thanksgiving morning kicks off with the Kids Mile at 7:00 a.m. Races are divided by age and gender, with waves starting every five minutes. The one-mile course loops out towards the Canal Path and back. Parents can run alongside children 4 and under, while those with kids 5 and older can run parallel to the course. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age group: 6 and under, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12.
The 5K, the most anticipated race of the Turkey Trot, follows shortly after the Kids Mile. Open to all runners and walkers, the 5K will feature staggered start times based on anticipated finish times. Strollers are welcome but should start at the back of the wave. Awards will be given to the top five overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three finishers in each age group.
After the race, head over to the James Monroe parking lot for snacks and to check out the sponsor booths. Be sure to bundle up, bring the whole family, and enjoy the festivities—there’s no better way to start your Thanksgiving Day than with a race, followed by a well-deserved feast!
Proceeds from the event support the Rappahannock Area YMCA programs. To sign up for the 32nd Annual YMCA Turkey Trot, visit runsignup.com/ymcaturkeytrotfxbg_signup.

Thanksgiving brings the aroma of pumpkin spice, the sight of autumn leaves, the cheers of football fans, the warmth of an oven, and the taste of a secret family recipe. The Thanksgiving holiday is unique and not shared worldwide. Making and sharing traditions can foster its spirit of reflection, grace, gathering, and bestowing blessing.
Host a “Thanks-Giving.” Receiving a note of gratitude unexpectedly brightens the day. Making someone feel appreciated and valued is an invaluable gift. Invite a group of friends, coworkers, or family to a get-together to write notes of encouragement to those needing it most. A person who had health struggles, went through a difficult trial this year, or an unnoticed friend who works hard and perseveres could benefit. The notes of encouragement could have a fall or Thanksgiving theme, and small gifts of candy, crafts, gift cards, candles, or jewelry could be given with the note. Time spent in fellowship with others during this activity is cherished, and reflecting on the positive attributes of others makes us more grateful for them.
Run a Turkey Trot benefit race. This activity is more than just burning some extra calories on Turkey Day; it can be shared with friends and family. Many 5k Turkey Trots
