Welcome to the December issue of Neighbors of Courthouse. December, a month of twinkling lights and shared warmth, invites us to reflect on the year gone by and the bonds that tie us together in our community. This season, let’s embrace the spirit of giving and kindness. May we open our doors and hearts a little wider, offering smiles and support to those around us. I’d like to introduce you to our feature family of the month, the Zorich family. “Do what you love, and love what you do,” the Zorich family exemplifies a life of happiness and unity. John and Christina, their son John Brayden, and their Cavapoo, Ace, have created a fulfilling life around this principle. The family is actively involved in their community, with John coaching baseball and running a golf league, also organizing a charity golf tournament for homeless female veterans. Christina, a realtor, finds joy in helping clients navigate the complexities of real estate. Their son, John Brayden, is an all-rounder in sports and academics, reflecting his parents’ values. Living in Colonial Forge, they enjoy a close-knit community life, emphasizing the importance of loving what you do in every aspect of life. Please help me welcome our new sponsors Jones TLC Pro, USA Allstars, Cinnaholic, HB Law, and Aquia Grooming. Please stop by and welcome them to Neighbors of Courthouse. We are excited to introduce Allie Medina, our newest team member, who joins us as a Contributing Writer. As a junior at Colonial Forge, Allie will bring a fresh perspective to our publication through her role as the author of the new High School Highlights section, representing her school with her insightful contributions. I encourage us all to participate in local events, support our small businesses, and reach out to those who might be alone during the holidays. Together, let’s create a December filled with warmth, joy, and a sense of belonging for everyone in our community. Wishing you all a delightful and heartwarming holiday season! Warm regards,

Navigating the Holiday Season with Serenity and Smiles The holiday season, with its twinkling lights, festive decorations, and the promise of delicious food and family gatherings, often comes with its own set of challenges. During the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to find yourself overwhelmed, stressed, and drained of joy that this season is supposed to bring. However, with a few mindful practices, it’s possible not only to live out the holidays but to enjoy them, finding calm smiles and embracing the true spirit of the season. One of the main reasons for holiday stress is having unrealistic expectations. Uh, this is me every year! I often create mental images of the perfect holiday, complete with gorgeous decorations, delicious meals, and ideal family gatherings. However, reality rarely matches my thoughts!! Embracing imperfections and understanding that the true beauty of the holidays is in the moments of authentic experiences, not in flawless festivity! One of my favorite authors and teachers of meditation, Eckhart Tolle, says, “The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” The holiday season may also bring a lot of invitations, events, and obligations for family and work. It’s normal to want to participate in everything, but it’s essential to recognize your limitations and prior commitments. This overscheduling of oneself is often my dilemma, too. Be honest about how much you can handle. Politely decline invitations and prioritize events that genuinely align with your values and bring you joy and smiles! Another way to bring more calm in your life during the holidays is to take a moment each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. Gratitude can shift your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life! It could be the warmth of your home, the laughter of your kids or family, or the simple pleasure of a warm cup of tea or a hot shower. Keeping an attitude of gratitude can be a great reminder of the blessings surrounding you and attract more things to be grateful for. One of the most beautiful parts of the holiday season is the spirit of giving without spending money! Engage in acts of kindness, whether big or small. Volunteer at local charities, help a neighbor, share a smile with a stranger, or offer a listening ear to someone in need. Be the change you want to see.

minutes of stretching can do wonders for your overall well-being and-- not to mention-- keep the calories at bay! As you move into the holidays and the new year, we may be around many people, including those with whom you might have conflicts or unresolved issues. This one may be tough, but practicing forgiveness, not just for others but also for yourself, is a game changer for enjoying the holidays more. Letting go of grudges and resentments can free you from stress, allowing you to enjoy the holiday season entirely. This will do wonders for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being! I also find that in our digital age, it’s easy to get caught up in the virtual world, even during the holidays. Make a conscious effort to disconnect from screens and social media. I know this is challenging if you use it for work or business but try instead to focus on face-to-face interactions, genuine conversations, and being fully present with those you meet. Accepting that not every moment will be perfect is perfectly fine! No one is perfect! Embracing the imperfections of the holiday season can lead to unexpected joys and memorable moments, sometimes even laughter! Learn to laugh at yourself, find beauty in chaos, and savor the unique experiences each holiday season brings! When I look back on my life, these are some of my favorite moments! Finding calm and joy during the holidays is not about eliminating stress or challenges but about navigating them with grace and mindfulness. Practicing gratitude, setting realistic expectations, nurturing meaningful connections, and taking care of your well-being, you can survive the holiday season and truly enjoy all the special moments. This is the gift. Life goes by fast, so embrace the season’s spirit, be kind to yourself, and remember that with craziness, the most precious moments are often filled with love, laughter, and genuine connections! Enjoy the moments and the true gift of the season!

During the crazy hustle and bustle, ensure you get enough rest, maintain a balanced diet, and engage in regular exercise such as walking or yoga.

Here is an affirmation for you to repeat in your heart: “In this season, I radiate calm and joy, illuminating the world around me with my smile.”

Even during busy times, carve out time for self-care. A mindful walk in nature, a relaxing bath, meditation, massage therapy (my favorite), or a few

© Best Version Media Pursuing Passions The Zorich’s understand the importance of personal growth and fulfillment. Christina is a licensed realtor and a short-sale negotiator in Virginia. Becoming a realtor is not just a job; it’s a rewarding profession that allows individuals to make a significant impact on people’s lives while enjoying a fulfilling career. While many people might initially think of real estate as simply buying and selling properties, the role of a realtor goes far beyond transactions. For Christina, it is one of the most rewarding careers not only to help provide for her family but to be able to help first-time home buyers, military families, and so many others in this venture. She ensures to make it enjoyable and a stress-free experience for them. As someone who bought a home during the real estate battles of having six rejected offers, I can appreciate Christina’s passion for real estate. It’s not just about finding any house but the right home for her client. As a short sale negotiator, Christina’s primary role is to act as a liaison between the homeowner, the lender, and potential buyers. Short sales occur when a homeowner cannot pay their mortgage and seeks approval from the lender to sell the property for less than the outstanding mortgage balance. Their expertise helps streamline the often complex and time-consuming short sale process, benefiting all parties. John works for a company called Cognosante, working with facilities and operations. The owner of the company recently bought the Washington Spirit, which is the professional women’s soccer team in DC. He will work closely with the team and get to work on some of the games. They will build a stadium shortly, and he is looking forward to participating in that process. Community and Giving Back Community involvement in your community is vital because it strengthens social bonds, fosters a sense of belonging, and promotes collective well-being. John grew up playing baseball and golf his whole life and played baseball at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. John used to play slow-pitch softball at an elite level, traveling all over the U.S. and playing in the United States Specialty Sports Association Conference. He recently retired from softball two years ago and now focuses on golf and coaching baseball.

“DO WHAT YOU LOVE. LOVE WHAT YOU DO.” MEET THE ZORICH FAMILY By Liz Hensel Photos by Karen Presecan Photography and the Zorich Family In a world where the daily grind often precedes passion and fulfillment, the Zorich family is an inspiring example of how a simple motto can lead to a life filled with happiness, purpose, and unwavering unity. For the Zorichs’, “Do what you love, and love what you do” is not just a saying; it’s a way of life that guides their every decision and brings them immeasurable joy. The Zorich family consists of John, Christina, their son John Brayden (12), and their beloved family dog a Cavapoo named Ace (2).

Therefore, there couldn’t be a better assistant coach for their son’s baseball team. Not only does he bring his knowledge and experience, but he gets to bond with his son. John runs the Tuesday Night League (TNL) at Augustine Golf Club. TNL is all handicapped based, so any level of golfer is welcome. TNL is always looking to grow and get more players. For the past 11 years, John has hosted a golf tournament through his work to fundraise for Final Salute Inc. A nonprofit organization that specializes in providing housing assistance to homeless female veterans. This past year, they raised 40k for the organization. Like Father Like Son

Love at First sight It was a recipe for true love when Christina and John met. Friends brought them together, a restaurant on the water on Fairview Beach, and the rest is history. They have been together for 14 years now. Throughout their years together they have formed countless memories that bring them joy. The birth of their son, buying their first home, then their second home, and their third.

John Brayden, from the moment he could sit up, was handed a baseball bat and golf club. They had to switch the golf balls at a young age to foam ones so that he wouldn’t accidentally break a window because of how far they would land.

John Brayden currently plays baseball for the Stars Organization; in the spring, he plays golf on the Under Armour Junior Golf Tour; he plays Basketball in the Winter for Stafford County Parks and Rec, and he is on the track team at his middle school. Aside from his incredible athleticism, John Brayden is a great student. Not only does he care significantly about his schoolwork, but he also has an artistic side, something he shares with his mom. Where History Meets Modern Living: Colonial Forge Nestled in the heart of Stafford County, Virginia,

Colonial Forge stands as a vibrant community that beautifully blends history with modern living. Christina knew that their current home was the one they would settle in until their son graduated high school. The cherry on top is that their best friends live one street over. The community amenities are plentiful, and with a picturesque backdrop, it’s the perfect investment for any homeowner. Every neighbor is friendly, and they love to sit on their front porch at the end of a busy day and enjoy their time together. One of their favorite pastimes is walking to Colonial Forge High School to support the football and baseball games. The neighborhood

has an annual end-of-summer party, and during the winter, they have neighbors’ nights out for adults to socialize in different community events. The Zorich’s family’s motto, “Do what you love, and love what you do,” has not only enriched their lives but has also given them a profound sense of purpose and joy. It reminds us that the pursuit of passion and fulfillment, as a family, can lead to a life filled with happiness, meaningful connections, and a profound sense of accomplishment. The Zorich’s stand as a beacon of hope for all who dare to follow their hearts and embrace the motto that has transformed their lives.

The Power of Printed Photos “Why should I bother to print my photos?” As a member of PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and VPPA (Virginia Professional Photographer’s Association), I have had opportunities to learn from some of the best photographers in the nation. One common theme I have picked up from all of them is that printed images are important. In my 15 years of being a professional photographer, I’ve more recently seen an increase in clients’ requests for digital files in place of printed images. Admittedly, I’ve gone back and forth between business models of selling digitals or prints. However, my heart is pulled by the importance of displaying family portraits. It has been scientifically proven that when kids see themselves pictured with their family unit, it gives them a sense of happiness, a sense of belonging. As teens, in a time where they tend to be confused, changing, growing, and learning who they are, seeing themselves in their family portrait daily improves their self-esteem and solidifies their sense of belonging. Mental health professionals agree that when children see family images displayed throughout their home, they ultimately feel like they are an important member of their family. They gain the feeling that they matter, their life is important. In the article “Health Benefits of Displaying Family Photos at Home” by Lisa Maccagno, Jaclyn Gulotta, Ph.D. and Vickey Easa, MSW agree that displaying family portraits in the home is a positive action towards self-esteem. Digital images simply don’t have the same effect. When I learned this, it was like a lightbulb moment. It became a big part of my “why.” I had already been displaying family portraits in my home for years, but now I knew that I wanted to share this with my clients. It makes sense to me. Before I

was a photographer, I taught high school students, and I was very aware then of the mental health challenges that kids and teens face. Today, I have my own teens, 19 and 13, and their mental health as well as that of their friends is always in the forefront of my mind. I am not saying that by displaying your portraits you’ll avoid all sadness and/or anxieties in your home. I’m saying that it can help. I can attest that when I walk into my home and see my walls, my heart is full. In 2021 we lost our beautiful family dog of 16 years. I am so thankful that I had our family portrait created with Boomer included in 2019. That image is displayed in a 30-inch by 24-inch frame on a prominent wall in our family room, where we see it every day. I understand all the hesitations: “What do we wear? What size image do want printed? What would look best in our home, a framed print or canvas?” Family portrait sessions should not be, and don’t have to be stressful or overwhelming. A professional photographer will help you through the entire process, from helping with clothing choices, to chosing location options, to helping decide what images to print and what size and format. With a professional, you are getting someone who is planning well before your session date, someone that understands lighting, posing and composition. A professional will get the right combination of posed and candid images, will have asked what images are most important to you, and will capture those for you beautifully. Whether you choose KPP as your portrait artist or another company, I encourage you to book a family session with a professional photographer that will create art for your home that will become part of your legacy and will bring you and your family joy that will last a lifetime.

Book a session in Dec. and receive a $100 print credit

Neighborhood Reads: Meet your local author Mora Soan

Meet the incredible Mora Soan, a passionate author, and the heart behind the enchanting book “Jacob in Japan.” What makes this book truly remarkable is that it’s a collaboration between Mora, her talented daughter Lana, and Lana’s best friend Lauren, resulting in stunning illustrations that bring the story to life. Mora’s journey to becoming an author is as captivating as her book. Born in Cambodia, her family’s path to a refugee camp in Thailand was marked by hardship and conflict. With the support of a sponsoring church, they embarked on a new chapter in Canada in November 1981. Mora’s pursuit of knowledge led her to graduate from college with a degree in business management, where she met her beloved husband, Jack. Together, they have created a joyous life in Stafford, Virginia, raising two wonderful children, Brandon, and Lana. Despite achieving a business accounting degree and a pharmacy technician certificate, Mora yearned for a deeper sense of fulfillment. Her calling led her to work with children, and she now holds the paraprofessional position at Kate Waller Barret Elementary in Stafford, VA. In 2019, Mora embarked on a life-changing journey, visiting her homeland of Cambodia, and making a layover in Japan. This short layover evolved

into an immersive cultural experience that ignited her passion for travel and gnomes. Inspired by her love for these mystical creatures and her adventures in Japan, Mora gave birth to her first children’s book, “Jacob in Japan.” This delightful tale follows Jacob, a gnome who stumbles into a magical pot, transporting him to the enchanting land of Japan. Despite his picky nature, Jacob soon finds himself exploring new horizons and savoring delectable cuisine. The story of Jacob’s adventures doesn’t end there. Mora is already hard at work on Jacob’s next journey, which will take him to Canada. Her vision is to create an enchanting series, sharing the magical exploits of this endearing gnome as he travels the world. Stay tuned for more captivating stories from Mora Soan, a storyteller who continues to enchant readers of all ages with her boundless imagination and passion for exploration. To purchase a book, visit your local Barnes and Noble and follow more of Jacob’s story on Instagram @jacob_the_gnome. We would love to showcase our local authors! Are you an author? Do you know an author? Are you part of a book club? Do you have a book recommendation? Send an email to lizhensel@bestversionmedia.com to spotlight your book.

Colonial Forge Introduces Ultimate Frisbee Team Allie Medina is a Colonial Forge junior and editor of their school newspaper, Talon Online News. Outside of writing, she plays for the Varsity soccer team. She also is co-founder and vice president of Forge’s Female Empowerment Club, which works to provide a platform for women-based acts of service.

One of the most beneficial things you can do in high school is join a sports team. There are a plethora of positives like physical fitness, teamwork and collaboration skills, and boosts in self-esteem and confidence. However, sometimes the competitive aspect of a varsity team just isn’t for everyone, especially when you’ve had no prior experiences playing sports.

News spread quickly and soon the numbers were adding up, and growing every day.

Colonial Forge has begun to offer a variety of school clubs, centered around recreational sports such as badminton, tabletop, and most notable, the school’s new up and running Ultimate Frisbee Club. It first got its start early into this school year, formed by teacher Mrs. Simpson and student Jordyn Hileman (‘25).

In the short time that this club has been formed, improvements in its members are already underway.

Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport in which each team works together to score points by catching the Frisbee in the opposing team’s end zone. This is the first Ultimate Frisbee team to ever be at Colonial Forge so the idea was left up to Mrs. Simpson, who approached Hileman with the project. After that, the rest was history.

“I became involved with ultimate frisbee after my teacher would tell the class how much fun it was. Obviously after hearing all that I had to find out for myself,” Luis Colon (‘26) shared.

“I’ve found it challenging so far to keep moving and just try to get used to the rules of the game. I keep practicing and getting better each time which is giving me a lot of hope,” Colon said. The path to being great isn’t always easy. There are practices after school every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday but for a few beginners, a little more extra help was needed. “I couldn’t throw a frisbee but I could catch it so I stayed after and learned how to throw one,” Akinbowale said.

But first, after all the preliminary steps of forming this new team, was the recruiting. “I really just want to build a family and get better so that we have more opportunities in the future,” Hileman concluded.

For potential members, the appeal of the club seemed mainly to lie in the opportunity to hang out with friends and get outdoors for exercise.

As of right now, Hileman’s family is made up of 20 people, and growing every day.

Toxic Plants to Avoid this Holiday Season Most people enjoy decorating for the holidays. So much, in fact, that many arguments catalyze across the country concerning how early is too early to make home a little more cozy for the holidays. However, if you are a pet owner, proceed with caution. Especially if you’ve welcomed a furry friend since the last holiday season, you may want to look at our list. We’ve compiled the most common holiday plants you want to avoid this year, as they’re toxic to our beloved, four-legged family members: • Poinsettias: This vibrant, classic Christmas plant is undoubtedly one of the most recognized. While severe toxicity is rare, the poinsettia’s milky white sap can irritate a pet’s mouth, leading to excessive drooling and mild gastrointestinal issues. Try a Christmas cactus or artificial decorations instead. • Mistletoe: It doesn’t matter if you “hang it with care,” mistletoe is notorious for its toxicity. The entirety of the plant is toxic to your furry family members, and ingesting it can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress, slow heart rate, and can even be fatal. You may be tempted to simply hang it high, away from your pet’s reach, but if you have a crafty cat, it is merely best to avoid it. • Holly: For your pet to “have a holly jolly Christmas this year,” it’s best to avoid this plant. Holly leaves, and berries are another quintessential decor item that poses a threat to your pet. Artificial holly should be used as an alternative, as the real deal contains compounds that can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy when ingested.

cessive drooling. Instead, try adding roses or orchids to your holiday decor. • Christmas Trees: Lastly, one of the central pieces of the holiday season necessitates extra caution. While the tree itself is not toxic, the water in the tree stand can contain poisonous fertilizers and other chemicals. Some of the tree decor, like ornaments, lights, and tinsel, especially, are also choking hazards and can cause intestinal obstructions if ingested. Ensure your ornaments are secure– you wouldn’t want a cat to knock off a family heirloom or treasured piece anyway– avoid tinsel altogether, and ensure the tree stand is covered and inaccessible to your pets. Consider one of the following alternatives to keep your house festive but your pets safe this holiday season. • Non-Toxic Plants: The Christmas cactus, a spider plant, or a Boston fern are all non-toxic alternatives that add some greenery to your decor without harming your pet. • Opt for Artificial: Who said real was better? Opting for an artificial tree will save you money in the long run. Still, it may be the better alternative anyway– especially if your two-legged family members have allergies or you don’t want the upkeep of a real tree. Fake plants can also be reused for years to come. • Safe Lighting: Our feline friends are inquisitive and may want a closer look at the bright lights and shiny ornaments. Opt for LED lights, which emit less heat and reduce the risk of burns. They’ll keep your more inquisitive, furry family members safe.

• Amaryllis: These beautiful bulbs with stunning blooms are highly toxic to pets. If a four-legged family member ingests any part of this plant, but especially the bulb, it can lead to severe vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, and even tremors.

Follow the tips above and cross-reference any new plant or decoration that comes into your home to keep your pets safe this holiday season.

• African Lily: LIke the amaryllis, ingesting any part of this popular holiday plant can lead to significant stomach and gastrointestinal issues and ex-

Autumnal Ambiance & Winter Wines: Tips for Indulging in Virginia Vino It won’t come as a surprise to many that Virginia offers a variety of activities to engage in during the late fall and winter months. As the seasons change and the sweltering summer humidity hibernates, many outdoor enthusiasts take to the trails. For those who still want to indulge in the picturesque landscapes and foliage that the fall season yields, we have the answer: wine. The peak months of summer and the harvest season are over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t partake in an afternoon or evening at your local winery. Stafford is home to Potomac Point Vineyard and Winery, as well as a handful of other smaller establishments, where you can enjoy all of the cozy vibes the season brings along with an old or new favorite vino. You just may want to keep the following tips in mind before venturing out to a Virginia winery: 1. Embrace the Autumn Atmosphere: With the end of the harvest season, late fall and winter bring a cozy atmosphere and unique charm to Virginia wineries. Skip Causey, owner and winemaker at Potomac Point, offered the following advice: “There’s more of a cozy feel [during November] visitors can enjoy,” adding that the harvest and wedding season are both over. He suggests looking for a venue with fire pits and tables, fireplaces, and comfortable seating. Basically, you want to “look for venues with options for your group.” Late fall and winter can also provide a more intimate feel if you’d prefer a fun date night or just an enjoyable evening with friends– especially with a crackling fireplace, rustic decor, and comfortable, cozy furniture. 2. Try the Seasonal Wines: A new season brings with it new favorites. While many enjoy more fruity or refreshing sangrias in the summer, a frizzante red, citrusy white wine, or a light rosė, winter is the perfect time to try a more tannic or richer, bolder red, a blend of merlots, or even a mulled wine. When asked, Causey said he trades his “Albariño (a double medal winner) for our Bordeaux blend.” Named “Richland Reserve Heritage,” Causey added that it is also a favorite among his patrons and has also won awards, most recently the Gold Medal at the 2021 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition. Visit a local winery and schedule a tasting to see what suits your palette. You may also find pairing events within the area. For example, Potomac Point offered “Fright Flights,” pairing wines with favorite Halloween candies in October, and they’ve been known to bake small pies you’d find during the holidays to pair alongside their winter favorites. Check out their blog posts for extra pairing tips, too!

3. Do Your Homework & Make Reservations: While you’ll likely enjoy far fewer people, many wineries change hours and open days during the “off-season.” Double-check the hours for your establishment and the days they are operating. Dress in layers if you think you’ll enjoy an indoor and outdoor atmosphere, and check the rules for your furry fourlegged friends and any of your two-legged offspring. Kids and dogs are both welcome at Potomac Point, for example, but they must adhere to the Virginia Health code, so dogs can join at the “tasting room, grounds, in our courtyard, and on the patio” and, of course, common sense applies for your children. Making reservations for your tasting or wine experience is also highly encouraged and recommended. Calling your preferred establishment before visiting will help you choose the exact experience that would be best suited for your group. You may want to reserve a wine tent at Potomac Point, for example, or a table inside by the fireplace– depending on your preference and what type of afternoon or evening you desire for your party.

Enjoy The Quieter Moments or Celebrate with Family: While you have family and friends in town, you might opt to get out of the house with everyone and opt for a change of scenery– or you may want to escape yourself and kick your feet up after your company leaves! Wineries are the perfect place to get out and get some fresh air, enjoy the ambiance, and perhaps play a game of cornhole or bocce. Maybe you just want to share stories and create more family memories around the fire pit. One option Potomac Point provides– and “one good thing” inspired by COVID– is the wine tent. An upgrade from the “fishbowl” or clear bubbles from those social distancing days, wine tents can be reserved for both small and large parties. They’re “better than the bubble” Causey laughed, adding that the wine tents at Potomac also offer table service, so you can enjoy charcuterie boards, plates of aged, smoked gouda, and more, brought directly to you.

Become a Neighborhood Ambassador! BY LIZ HENSEL

Give Potomac Point a Try! With over 23 acres of land, a bistro, outdoor tents, and more, Potomac Point is the perfect venue to enjoy a new seasonal favorite and spend quality time with friends and family this winter. With European influence stemming from its winemakers of Italian, Spanish, and French nationalities, Potomac Point can offer visitors a taste of Tuscany and beyond. Skip and his wife, Cindi, most recently traveled to Cortina, Italy. With each trip to Europe, they return with added inspiration and influence for their plot of paradise for Virginians to enjoy. They even built their own bocce court at Potomac, complete with “crushed oyster shells, just like the Italians do,” which Skip believes to be the only regulation bocce court within Stafford County. Whether it’s a Bordeaux or rich, red blend you crave over the colder months, you’ll taste the European influence in their production. Consider embarking on a wine trail adventure this winter. Just remember these tips to make the most of your experience, and “Cin cin!” to a winter wonderland of wine!

Christmas Excursions Close to Home When you think of taking a trip to celebrate Christmas and other winter holidays do you dream of going to Lapland, where you can see real reindeer, visit Santa Claus Village, experience the Aurora Borealis & snow buildings like igloos & ice hotels. Or maybe you dream of a river cruise in Europe to visit the wonderful Christkindlmarkts. For most of us these trips are simply not feasible. They are expensive & many of us have beloved holiday traditions & prefer to be home with family & friends. Well, I am here to share some other options that are much closer to home. Baltimore and Philadelphia both have good Christkindlmarkts. Old town Alexandria is having a Christmas market on December 9th at John Carlyle Square from 11-4. Many nearby towns have parades, with Middleburg, VA having an exceptional one. Things kick off at 8:00 am on December 2nd with breakfast with Santa. The Middleburg Hunt leads the parade at 11:00. Then wrap things up with progressive food, wine, cider, beer & spirit tastings at the many wineries, breweries & distilleries.

There is always New York! The Rockettes, the Macy’s Christmas windows, the Christmas tree and skating at Rockefeller Center, Central Park, various high rise observatories, Dyker Heights decorations - the list goes on & on. It’s an easy train journey, & not expensive if booked early, & there are many reasonable hotels.

The Greenbrier & Homestead Resorts go all out with decorations. For a great indulgent experience take tea at one of the many DC hotels - The Willard, The Ritz, The Waldorf-Astoria, The Four Seasons and many more offer this delightful afternoon tradition. The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond is another excellent choice & the Lewis Ginter Gardens offer a spectacular light show.

My favorite Christmas trip was to Christmas City in Bethlehem, PA. We stayed in the Bethlehem Hotel right in the town center with many shops & restaurants nearby. The Moravians founded this town and are probably best known for their delicious Moravian cookies (very thin & crispy spice cookies) & the 26 pointed Moravian star. They also have a very good Christkindlmarkt.

Williamsburg at Christmas is unique. You can walk through the restored area for free and marvel at the door decorations on the houses. All items used for the decorations have to be things that were found in the 1700’s. Shells, pine cones, apples & other fruit, nuts & greenery adorn the homes with some really outstanding ideas! And there is Busch Gardens Christmas Town, Virginia’s largest Christmas celebration. Rides, shows, food & lights transform the theme park into a winter wonderland.

I hope I have given you some ideas for Christmas experiences. I have a wealth of travel knowledge from living in 5 countries & visiting 41 states & 32 countries. Great Grandma Rita’s GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE My mother-in-law Astrid was born and raised in Germany. Sharing the recipe that she learned from her mother-in-law is so special. Making a German chocolate cake with family is a delightful bonding experience. As we gather in the kitchen, laughter and excitement fill the air. It’s the peak of the holiday season, and our German chocolate cake is the perfect sweet for our dinner. The sweet aroma wafts through the house as we work together, sharing stories and tips. Finally, we all savor the rich, decadent result of our collaborative effort, relishing not just the cake but the cherished moments we’ve created together. It’s a heartwarming tradition that brings us closer and leaves us with both a delicious dessert and beautiful memories. This cake is made in two parts. Part 1: The Cake

Part 2: Coconut Pecan Frosting/Filling

Ingredients • 1/2 cup of boiling water • 4 oz Baker’s German’s Sweet Baking chocolate • 4 large room-temperature eggs • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 cups Granulated sugar • 1 cup Unsalted softened butter • 1 cup Buttermilk • 1 tsp baking soda • 1 tsp Vanilla extract • 1/2 tsp Salt

Ingredients • 1 can 12 oz Evaporated milk • 1 1/2 cups Granulated sugar • 4 large Egg yolks • 2 tsp Vanilla extract • 2 1/2 cups Coconut flakes sweetened • 1 1/2 cups Pecans toasted and chopped • 3/4 cup Unsalted butter • 1/8 tsp salt

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line with parchment paper and grease 3 (8-inch) round cake pans or 2 (9-inch). Set it aside. 2. In a glass measuring cup, microwave the water until boiling. Stir in the chocolate until completely melted and smooth. Set it aside. 3. In a medium-size bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set it aside. 4. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. About 3-4 minutes. Add the eggs (whole eggs, not separated), one at a time, beating well after each addition. 5. Stir in the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla extract. 6. Beat in the flour mixture in thirds alternating with the buttermilk, beating after each addition until smooth. 7. Divide the cake batter evenly into all three prepared cake pans— about 2 1/2 cups of batter for each pan. 8. Bake for 30 minutes or until the cake springs back when lightly pressed in the center. Transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool for at least 15 minutes in the pan. Remove the cakes from the pan to the wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Instructions 1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the evaporated milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and salt. Cook, stirring constantly for 12 minutes, until thickened and golden brown. 2. Remove from the heat and stir in the coconut, pecans, and vanilla. Cool to room temperature. 3. Place one cake layer on a cake plate. Spread one-third of the filling over the top of the cake, leaving a 1/4-inch border. Top with the second layer spread with half of the remaining filling. Place the third layer on top and spread the remaining frosting evenly over the top, leaving the sides of the cake exposed.

HEROES SPOTLIGHT: MEET AIR FORCE MASTER SERGEANT DAVID J. KRETZER Master Sergeant Kretzer was born in Round Rock, Texas, and enlisted in the Air Force in July 2005 after graduating from Leander High School. After completing Basic Military Training and Technical Training he was assigned to Dyess AFB in 2005, then in 2010 was attached to the Joint Force Command Headquarters North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the Netherlands. He has compiled a wide range of experience through 6 deployments as well as serving with Joint Nations across the globe such as Iraq, Korea, Malaysia, Qatar, Alaska, Okinawa, Australia, and Afghanistan. MSgt David J. Kretzer currently serves as an Acquisition Logistics Manager with the Acquisition Management and Integration Center (AMIC) Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Hampton Virginia. He provides overall direction, oversight, education, and coordination for AMIC logistics contractors. What It Means to Serve Serving in the Air Force goes far beyond just a job or a career; it’s a way of life and a profound commitment to something greater than oneself. Serving in the military has meant dedicating my life to the protection and defense of my country, its values, and the people who call it home. It means being part of a team, a family, that shares a common mission and purpose. The bond forged with my fellow service members is unbreakable, and it’s a privilege to stand alongside them in the face of adversity. My wife, Erin, and my two children have been my unwavering source of support and motivation. They have made countless sacrifices and endured long separations, which reminds me of the importance of the work we do. Serving means safeguarding not only the freedoms we cherish but also the well-being of our loved ones and the promise of a better future for all. Having been deployed to Iraq, I understand the gravity of the missions we undertake. It means facing danger head-on, witnessing the realities of conflict, and the human cost it incurs. Serving means carrying the memories and experiences of those tours with me, a constant reminder of the price paid for the freedoms we enjoy.

We would love to feature our neighborhood heroes. If you know a service member, veteran, nurse, teacher, or first responder please email lizhensel@bestversionmedia.com.

You can use it to decorate a tree or to put it up against the wall, for mom and dad, it’s another fantastic priceless piece of décor that can be kept in the memory box of Holiday Season 2023. Materials: • Three popsicle sticks • Brown construction paper • Yellow construction paper • Green paint or marker • Buttons, glitter, or any fun small items to make your ornament sparkle. • Scissors • Glue • String Directions: 1. Grab your three popsicle sticks and glue them to shape a triangle to form your Christmas tree color it in with your green paint or marker. 2. Grab your brown construction cut a small rectangle, and glue it to the bottom of your triangle as that will be the base of your tree. 3. Grab the buttons, glitter, and any knick-knacks and start gluing them on your tree. 4. Take your yellow construction paper and cut out a star, which you will glue at the top of your tree. 5.
