SU R VIVING SU MMER STORMS AND FIREWORKS: Your Pet’s Guide to Zen

Summer’s arrival brings not just sunny days, but also thunderstorms and fireworks. Explosive sounds, including booms echoing from Quanti co, can easily turn your typically calm pet into a panting, drooling, nervous wreck. Here are a few integrative techniques you can use to keep your furry friend calm during these stressful events.

Create a Safe Space

Create a designated quiet and cozy haven indoors where your pet can retreat during loud events, ideally away from windows and external walls to minimize noise. Provide their favorite bedding and toys for comfort, and play calm ing music or white noise to further drown out the booms. Remember, your pet can sense your anxiety, so it’s important to stay calm yourself.

Try a Thundershirt

Invest in a Thundershirt – these swaddling garments ap ply gentle, constant pressure to your pet’s body, which can have a calming effect.

Use Acupressure Points for Calming

Acupressure, akin to acupuncture, can be applied to help soothe your pet Gently press and massage each point with your thumb in a circular motion for about 1-2 minutes. Here are three points to focus on:

GV 20: On top of the head, directly in the middle between the ears.

An-shen (Calm Spirit): A pair of points - Behind the head in the depression at the back of each ear base.

PC 6: On the inside of the front leg, 1/3 of the way up from the wrist.

Work on Desensitization

Gradually expose your pet to recorded sounds of loud noises, thunderstorms, or fireworks at a very low volume, rewarding them for staying calm. Slowly increase the vol ume over time.

Consider Calming Treats/Supplements

There are numerous brands of calming treats on the market, most containing natural ingredients formulated to decrease anxiety. CBD has also gained popularity for its potential to reduce anxiety. Always consult your veterinarian before introducing any new supplement to ensure it’s appropriate for your pet.

Chef Daniel Perron:

A CULINARY JOURNEY ROOTED IN PASSION AND COMMUNITY

Chef Daniel Perron’s culinary journey is a testament to dedication, passion, and the pursuit of excellence. Residing in Stafford with his wife Cassie, 35, and their two children, Sophie, 14, and Michael, 12, Daniel has not only established himself as a prominent figure in the culinary world but also as a beloved member of the community.

A Passion for Cooking

Daniel’s love for the culinary arts began early in life.

“I have been working in restaurants since I was 16 and cooking since I was 18,” he recalled. This initial foray into the culinary world set the stage for what would become a lifelong pursuit. At 21, Daniel made the pivotal decision to enroll in culinary school while simultaneously landing his first fine dining job at Trummer’s on Main in Clifton. This dual commitment to education and practical experience laid a strong foundation for his career.

However, after a year of balancing school and work, Daniel realized that the real learning was happening in the kitchen.

“The restaurant was my school,” he said. For two years, he immersed himself in every aspect of the culinary arts at Trummer’s, mastering soups, sauces, and butchering techniques. This hands-on experience proved invaluable and set the stage for his future endeavors.

Rising Through the Ranks

Daniel’s career continued to flourish as he moved on to work in Washington, D.C., at renowned establishments like Range by Bryan Voltaggio and Blue Duck Tavern. His big break came when he became the sous chef at Fiola Mare, helping to open one of the city’s hottest restaurants at the time.

“It was there that really opened up my eyes to what food could be,” Daniel shared. The opportunity to work with high-quality ingredients from around the world and to change the menu daily pushed Daniel to new creative heights.

At 26, Daniel achieved a significant milestone by becoming the Executive Chef at Whaley’s, a seafood restaurant in D.C. This role was his toughest yet, but it allowed him to apply his principles in a creative and impactful way.

“We accomplished a lot and garnered some high praise,” he said. After three and a half years at Whaley’s, the pandemic brought about a new chapter in Daniel’s career.

Returning to Trummer’s as the Executive Chef, almost a decade after he first started there, was a full circle moment for Daniel.

“I tried to apply the same standards and philosophy as when I first started there,” he explained. The experience of leading the team through a challenging period further honed his leadership skills and prepared him for his current role as the Executive Chef at Charlie Palmer Steakhouse. This position, with its favorable work-life balance, allows Daniel to spend more time with his family and work on his dream of opening his own restaurant.

Balancing Family and Career While Embracing Community Life

When he’s not in the kitchen, Daniel prioritizes spending quality time with his family. “I try to spend as much time with my family as possible whether that is school functions, going out to try a new restaurant, or just watching a movie together,” he said. His hobbies also include watching football and cheering for his favorite team, the Green Bay Packers.

Daniel and his family moved to the area seeking a bigger home and a quieter neighborhood and have enjoyed the area for over two years now. They have found much more than that. “I enjoy the sense of community that everyone seems to have here and that it’s a very safe place to live,” Daniel noted.

“While we don’t get to enjoy the area as much as we should with our busy schedules, we enjoy going to the farmer’s markets, Funland, and especially Benny Vitali’s since our dog can come along, too.”

While their busy schedules limit their involvement in neighborhood activities, the Perron family values the support of their community. They also contribute by donating to the Squishy Face Crew, a rescue organization for dogs and where their rescue dog, Macaroni, came from.

“We donate items when we can to the Squishy Face Crew for rescued dogs,” Daniel mentions, highlighting their commitment to giving back.

Culinary Adventures and Inspirations

Traveling plays a significant role in Daniel’s life, too, both for leisure and culinary inspiration. “We just got back recently from a wonderful vacation to Italy,” he said, but it is Charleston, SC, that is his favorite annual destination. The city’s vibrant restaurant scene and southern hospitality offer a perfect blend of relaxation for the family, while offering professional enrichment for him.

One way he tried to enrich the food scene in Stafford this past year was through his special Supper Club in Aquia Harbour.

“I wanted to bring something to the area that it desperately needed and to also push myself creatively,” he said, but recently Daniel had to cease hosting his popular supper club dinners. “When I broke the news, I wasn’t expecting much response, but it was actually quite the opposite,” Daniel said. His decision was met with overwhelming support and encouragement from the community.

“There were tons of people who reached out to offer up their homes for supper club dinners and to say that they either really enjoyed their experience and wanted to come back or had planned on trying it soon,” Daniel shared. The outpouring of appreciation reaffirmed the impact he had made, so the community can hope he’ll bring it back soon.

“A lot of people were sad that it was over. The outpouring of support really made me feel like I had at least made a small impact on the community. I appreciate the support and I hope I can continue to make an impact again soon,” he concluded. Hopefully, he’ll be making his impact by opening his own restaurant in the near future, so residents can experience his culinary delights locally again.

As Daniel looks forward to opening his own restaurant in the near future, he remains grounded in the values that have guided him thus far and committed to the wonderful community he and his supportive family call home.

PRECISION HOME MOVERS: Where Customer Service Meets Compassion

Ara Der-boghossian has been an integral part of the moving industry for 14 years. Six years ago, in 2018, he decided to take a significant step by founding Precision Home Movers. The inspiration behind this venture stemmed from his personal experience.

“I started as a mover to help earn income as my wife and I started a family,” Ara explained. Over time, he found himself captivated by the profound impact he could have on people during one of the most stressful events in their lives. “I grew to love the feeling of helping people during such a stressful process as moving by providing excellent moving and customer service.”

At the heart of Precision Home Movers lies a simple, yet powerful, philosophy: delivering high-quality customer service with top-notch skill and efficiency on every single move. Ara’s personal touch and dedication to customer satisfaction are evident in every aspect of the business.

“My goal during every interaction with my customers is to ease their worry by handling their belongings as if they were my own and treating everyone with the utmost respect,” he emphasized. This approach has garnered the company numerous high ratings and positive reviews online, reflecting their commitment to excellence.

Ara draws his greatest inspiration from his faith. “My greatest inspiration in life is Jesus Christ. I try each and every day to follow His teachings about love for others and caring for those around me,” he shared. This belief system seamlessly integrates into his work ethic, where each new move becomes an opportunity to embody his values through hard work and dedication.

Ara’s care and concern is evident in every interaction, and he wholeheartedly believes in his mission.

“I appreciate the opportunity I’ve been given in this life to share my strong work ethic with this community,” he said. “My driving force each day is to give every obstacle my absolute all so I can be proud at the end of the job I have accomplished.” For Ara, a fulfilling life is one spent in service to others, and this belief continuously drives him to strive for excellence in his business, ensuring he provides the highest level of moving services possible.

One of the most rewarding aspects of owning Precision Home Movers is the chance to help others while working alongside a team that shares his passion. “It is a blessing to work hard to help others alongside a crew of friends that I have personally trained and love their work as much as I do.” Ara has assembled a crew that is not only dedicated and reliable but includes some of his best friends.

• Premier, full service, small business.

• 20+ years professional experience.

“We have the biggest laughs in the truck to-and-from each move, sharing inside jokes and keeping up on each other’s lives,” Ara explained. Maintaining high morale among his team is a priority, and he is always seeking ways to keep his crew happy while they deliver outstanding service. This camaraderie extends to their interactions with customers.

“Every day, when we arrive at a customer’s home, we greet them with a sincere smile and excitement for the challenge ahead.”

Behind the scenes, Ara’s wife, Ashly, plays a pivotal role in managing the business while also homeschooling their six children– with a seventh on the way. The family leads a busy but fulfilling life, balancing their business responsibilities with personal interests.

“Ashly manages the backend of the business, a large garden, rabbits, dogs, and whatever else comes her way,” Ara noted. In their free time, the family enjoys outdoor activities and cozy family movie nights. They are active members of their local church, with the children participating in the choir and other community activities such as taekwondo and soccer.

Those same attributes his children develop through their various activities are the ones Ara is most proud to instill in his business as well: humility, compassion, drive, and dedication.

Precision Home Movers is more than just a moving company. It is a business catalyzed by Ara’s faith, dedication, and community service and driven by a team that values each customer’s experience. Precision Home Movers strives to make every move a positive and memorable one.

APEROL SPRITZ RECIPE:

Aperol Spritz Recipe

The recipe for an Aperol Spritz is simple, yet it delivers a complex and delightful taste. You can customize it with different ingredients to suit your preferences. Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients:

3 parts prosecco

2 parts Aperol

1 part club soda or sparkling water

Ice cubes

Orange slice for garnish

Instructions:

Fill a large wine glass halfway with ice cubes.

Add 3 parts Prosecco.

Add 2 parts Aperol.

Add 1 part club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently to combine.

Garnish with an orange slice. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Variations:

Limoncello Spritz: Substitute Aperol with limoncello for another citrusy twist.

Campari Spritz: Substitute Campari for a more bitter and stronger drink.

Flavored Sparkling Water: Try using blood orange or other flavored sparkling waters for a unique taste.

Memories and Tips:

My first encounter with the Aperol Spritz was slightly bitter, but it quickly became a favorite. By the end of our time living in Italy, I found myself enjoying spritzes with our neighbors 2-3 times a week. We even had “Fanta Fridays” with our girls, where they enjoyed Fanta (which is essentially carbonated orange juice in Italy) while I savored my spritz. This tradition, accompanied by San Carlo potato chips, became a cherished part of our routine after school pick-up to start the weekend.

So, next time you want to reminisce about Italian aperitivo or simply enjoy a refreshing cocktail, make yourself an Aperol Spritz. Sit down, relax, and let the flavors transport you back to the beautiful piazzas of Italy. Cin cin!

Do you have some fun cocktails or mocktails to add to our cocktail corner? Please email them to mhardgrove@bestversionmedia.com

Relax & Reconnect

And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.

I hope the month of July allows you the opportunity to relax, reconnect and create memories with your families and friends. I enjoy the sounds of my young adults being home from college. I chuckle at the fact that at dinner time, they are wondering what’s for dinner, like they can’t fix something themselves. Their memories of home are the day to day joys they reflect on and appreciate a little more by going away from home. Regardless of how you spend your July, summertime is like a family reunion to exhale a little and enjoy some long needed and well deserved downtime.

If you take a weekend or an evening to just relax and do nothing with your kids.

Kudos to you!

To the kids who may be working this summer, taking a summer school class or working on those college essays.

Kudos to you!

To the kids that go to tutoring to fill the academic gaps, attend academic camps or camps that interest you.

Kudos to you!

Are you spending quality time with family and friends? Volunteering? Traveling? Doing nothing?

Kudos to you!

Parents, we all deserve a moment to relax and enjoy the time with our children. Time goes so fast, so hold on to it now while they are home and before the school supply commercials begin!

Adventure Awaits IN OUR NATIONAL PARKS

We were ready for adventure! Our wanderlust had grown to epic proportions. The RV had snacks, blankets, clothes, games, and all the “things” for a fun-filled family vacation. We were headed for a destination of bliss to several of our nation’s breathtaking national parks. These are trips of a lifetime! Booking the campgrounds, packing, and making sure the kiddos are occupied is crucial. Then comes the tactical search for activities, perfect hikes, scenic drives, savory restaurants, and the perfect souvenir shops. So take it from someone who has experienced spending weeks on end with teens and young children in an RV to see some of the most beautiful sights on earth; it can be accomplished and enjoyed!

One truth about visiting our national parks is that there is so much to see and so little time. The National Park Service app was helpful in choosing sights and hikes with distances and degrees of difficulty. The app describes the national parks and provides photo galleries, activities, amenities, weather, and park fees. Being informed is critical, especially when encountering dangerous terrain and wildlife. Plan ahead and know what to pack for food, water, proper shoes, and clothing.

Our first exploration was to The Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks. We were unaware of the beauty we would encounter. While indulging in our hikes, we were awed by the splendor of copper sunsets, castles of painted sandstone, rainstorms that quenched dry sand, hidden pools of emerald, and hues of flowers that beamed from clefts of jolting rocks. As a family, we were transported to terrestrial wonderlands. Our next

stop on this journey was Bryce Canyon. We raced through the soul-freeing, scenic trails on a pack of four-wheelers. We were made alive with wind in our hair and sun dancing on the valleys!

We escaped to Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, and Badlands National Parks this summer. While traversing The Grand Tetons, we soaked in snow-capped mountains, prolific evergreens, crystal streams, radiant blue skies, roaring rapids, and exquisite sunsets. Elk pranced in the meadows while we were immersed in the therapeutic mineral water of hot springs. In our stops, we were transported through time to neighboring Wild West towns and log-cabin diners.

As our voyage continued to Yellowstone, the land of a supervolcano, we entered the sci-fi dimensions of thermal vents, erupting geysers, mud volcanoes, turquoise pools, and rainbow hot springs. Wildlife was abundant and intriguing. Bison grazed, almost unaware of our close presence. The experience was magnificent! Moose, grizzlies, and wolves roam free while bald eagles soar above the mountaintops. Our final expedition was a sunset drive through the Badlands. While sitting around a campfire, I could only imagine what it must have been like to live during the days of the untamed West. Reflecting on traveling the world, little can be compared to the majestic beauty in our sixty-three national parks. What could be next on our list of national park adventures? Glacier and Olympic National Parks might be on the horizon. What is on your list? I encourage you to make this “bucket list” a near-future reality. Begin dreaming at https://www.nps.gov.

Transforming Your Outdoors to an Oasis

The enchantment of summer is upon us. Leisure and frolic have taken on new heights, and our outdoor spaces have become nature escapes. Tranquility and warm connections are calling. You can transform an outdoor eyesore into a tantalizing tapestry. King of his craft, Paul Gardner, owner of Artscapes, shares his expertise with us.

Consider the preferences of the homeowner. What is your primary goal for your outdoor space? Do you seek entertainment, relaxation, or aesthetics? Do you have any specific features in mind such as a glowing fire pit with comfortable seating, decorative water features, or an outdoor kitchen? Do you have a budget and a specific style in mind? Are there existing landscaping or structures to be incorporated or removed? What is the maintenance level you are comfortable with?

Make an outdoor space inviting.

This can be accomplished by landscaping, lighting, patio work, and decor. Use a variety of lush plants, trees, and seasonal shrubs to create a dynamic environment. Install pathway lights, string lights, or landscape spotlights for safety and ambiance. Use pavers for a durable, stylish patio floor. Embellish with outdoor cushions, throws, rugs, planters, and sculptures.

Dream of the ultimate outdoor summer gathering area. A dream space could include a spacious patio or deck with ample seating and

charming dining areas to invite family and friends. From here you could add an elaborate outdoor kitchen, grill, and prep space. Position it close to the indoor kitchen for convenience. Include a sink, fridge, storage, and inviting counter for socializing. Integrate a pool or hot tub in the landscaping for ultimate, year-round relaxation. A nearby pavilion, pergola, umbrella, or awning could provide shade and comfort for guests. A cozy fire, string lights, landscape lights, and intimate lanterns perfect an evening gathering.

Use and maintain during fall and winter.

With fire features, use fire pits or outdoor heaters to extend usability into cooler months. Ensure ample lighting for shorter days. Use weatherproof furniture and consider covers or storage during the off-season. When using hardscaping, choose materials that can withstand freezing and thawing cycles. For plants, include evergreens and vegetation with berries or varied bark texture to maintain color vibrance.

Now it’s your turn. This is only the beginning. For more inspiration, explore home and garden magazines or websites, local botanical gardens or outdoor shows, and professional landscape design firms like Artscapes Outdoor Living.

Raina Chan: Pursuing Dreams with Passion and Perseverance

Tayler Tanks is a rising senior at Mountain View High School. She serves on the Student Council as president. She is a member of the Interact club, the Black Student Union, FCCLA, and FCA. With being in multiple clubs and activities, Tayler is an extremely active member of the Stafford community.

Raina Chan, a rising junior at Mountain View High School, is not just your average student. She is an inspiration, too, embodying the essence of following your dreams and conquering any challenges that may arise along the way.

Raina’s first performance was several years ago; she would constantly perform recitals for her vocal coach. She said, “Working with others has always been a pleasant experience.¨

When asked what interested her in the performing arts, she replied ¨my family.¨ Raina’s mother, father, and sister are all very musical and share a love for performing arts.

Raina explains that her sister is a huge motivation for her and was the catalyst behind Raina beginning to learn to play instruments, singing, and eventually acting.

With unwavering confidence and infectious charisma, Raina is a remarkable role model for those who aspire to pursue their passions and refuse to surrender.

Raina is currently the soloist singer for Mountain View’s jazz band, and she loves to adventure out and explore her abilities with musical arts. A few years ago, Raina was cast in the Riverside Dinner Theater’s production of South Pacific. She has also played in the production of Annie and even Mountain View’s production of Les Misérables.

From a young age, Raina showed extraordinary determination to chase her dreams. Raina never settled for mediocrity, whether it was her love for the performing arts and singing or her unwavering commitment to academic excellence. Her relentless pursuit of her passions has led her to new heights, inspiring those around her to do the same.

At only 14 Years old, Raina continued to pursue her passion, which led her to audition for NBC’s The Voice.

Raina’s audition was a force to be reckoned with, even though it didn’t result in any chairs turning for her. But that setback didn’t dampen her spirit. Instead, she embraced the feedback from the incredible coaches and is now using their words of encouragement as fuel to propel her towards her goals.

Raia shared her experience with The Voice: ¨My overall experience with the voice was surreal. I met so many talented, sweet, and hardworking people. It was a bummer that none of the coaches turned, but I am still so honored

that I had the wonderful opportunity to perform in front of the most lovely stars who have inspired me since I developed my dream to perform and give other people something to relate to, love, and enjoy. They all have given me such solid advice and have encouraged me to work hard and keep chasing after my hopes and dreams.¨

Raina’s confidence is truly unmatched. She possesses a fantastic ability to radiate positivity and self-assurance, even in the face of adversity.

Her unwavering belief in herself and her abilities has allowed her to overcome countless obstacles that would have deterred others. Raina’s resilience and upbeat spirit testify to the power of self-belief and the importance of never giving up.

But Raina’s confidence is not what sets her apart; her charisma captivates all who encounter her. With a magnetic personality and infectious enthusiasm, Raina has the remarkable ability to inspire and motivate others.

Her genuine passion for her pursuits is evident in every interaction, leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to cross her path.

Raina’s story reminds us that we can achieve great things and turn our dreams into reality with the right mindset and an unyielding spirit.
