“What a sigh of relief. Had wind damage to attic vent which had ripped off siding and gable vent of house. Of course it was going to rain this night so I’m freaking out a bit thinking thousdands of dollars of water damage. I explained my dilemma to Mr Blanco and he immediately left from a job he was 昀椀nishing up in Fredericksburg. I had called numerous other companies to help but no time or people available. He arrived an hour after I called him and quickly sealed up the area from water intrusion. Great Company, Great Owner and Employees, and quick Response.” G. Johnson

“We had a 14-foot circle patio that was barely useful for much unless you wanted just a 昀椀re pit on. We contacted Jose and explained what we wanted, and it turned out great. DEAR STAFFORD RESIDENTS,

Dori Stewart Publisher

Crissy Hall Publisher’s Assistant

Mallory Hardgrove Content Coordinator

Welcome to the December issue of Stafford Living. In this month’s issue, we meet the Whitleys: an amazing couple who overcame life’s challenges together while giving back to the community. The remarkable duo of Dan and Megan Whitley have truly changed the lives of 25 kids through their foster care journey, providing an outstanding example of generosity for their own children and the community as well. Speaking of generosity– and with the holiday season in full-swing– we thought this month would be perfect to spotlight two charities devoted to keeping food on the table. Both S.E.R.V.E. and the Fredericksburg Food Bank are pivotal organizations in combating hunger in our region. Learn more about each organization and what they literally bring to the table for our local residents and families. If you have food to give or time to spare this season, feel free to connect with those amazing organizations and show your support. Speaking of the holiday season, we can all get a little stressed this time of year. See what advice you can glean from Linda Onsorio, owner of Bear River Massage, and her suggestions for navigating the holiday season. ‘Tis the season for photographs, too. Our resident photographer and expert contributor, Karen Presecan reminds us of the power of getting those photographs printed and displayed around our homes. You might be surprised at some of the benefits! There are quite a few benefits to our location in Stafford County as well this time of year. With its proximity to Washington, D.C., Stafford County yields plenty of opportunities to don your jingle bells and enjoy a night of festive lights, ice-skating, or taking a ride on the Polar Express. Don’t overbook yourself, but definitely take advantage of all of the festivities taking place this month in and around Stafford, Fredericksburg, and the greater DMV! And, I suppose it’s time for me to introduce myself. I’m Mallory Hardgrove, and I’m delighted to be your new Content Coordinator for Stafford Living. My husband and I moved to St. George’s Estates in June with our three girls, dog, and cat, and we’re pleased to be new members of this community. Though I’m a Pittsburgh native, I’ve lived and taught in multiple counties in Virginia, met my husband in Virginia, and I’m thrilled to be able to raise our girls in Virginia-- this community in particular. What excites me most about this new position is learning about the incredible people who make Stafford a better place to live. If you know of someone who has a remarkable story or just an ordinary person doing all they can for this community, please nominate them for one of our various spotlight features. We’d love the opportunity to recognize those who serve Stafford and exemplify what it means to be a good neighbor. If you would like your family to be featured in an upcoming magazine or have some interesting news to share, don’t hesitate to contact me at MHardgrove@BestVersionMedia.com. Basically, if you have a story to tell, we’d love to give you the platform and opportunity to do so. I echo Dori’s sentiments from previous issues: we want this to be a magazine for you, highlighting all of the great things this community has to offer.

© Best Version Media NAVIGATING THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH SERENITY AND SMILES

By Linda Osorio, Owner Bear River Massage

The holiday season, with its twinkling lights, festive decorations, and the promise of delicious food and family gatherings, often comes with its own set of challenges. During the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to find yourself overwhelmed, stressed, and drained of the joy that this season is supposed to bring. However, with a few mindful practices, it’s possible not only to live out the holidays but to enjoy them, finding calm smiles and embracing the true spirit of the season. One of the main reasons for holiday stress is having unrealistic expectations. Uh, this is me every year! I often create mental images of the perfect holiday, complete with gorgeous decorations, delicious meals, and ideal family gatherings. However, reality rarely matches my thoughts!! Embracing imperfections and understanding that the true beauty of the holidays is in the moments of authentic experiences, not in flawless festivity! One of my favorite authors and teachers of meditation, Eckhart Tolle, says, “The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” The holiday season may also bring a lot of invitations, events, and obligations for family and work. It’s normal to want to participate in everything, but it’s essential to recognize your limitations and prior commitments. This overscheduling of oneself is often my dilemma, too. Be honest about how much you can handle. Politely decline invitations and prioritize events that genuinely align with your values and bring you joy and smiles! Another way to bring more calm in your life during the holidays is to take a moment each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. Gratitude can shift your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life! It could be the warmth of your home, the laughter of your kids or family, or the simple pleasure of a warm cup of tea or a hot shower. Keeping an attitude of gratitude can be a great reminder of the blessings surrounding you and attract more things to be grateful for. One of the most beautiful parts of the holiday season is the spirit of giving without spending money! Engage in acts of kindness, whether big or small. Volunteer at local charities, help a neighbor, share a smile with a stranger, or offer a listening ear to someone in need. Be the change you want to see.

minutes of stretching can do wonders for your overall well-being and-- not to mention-- keep the calories at bay! As you move into the holidays and the new year, we may be around many people, including those with whom you might have conflicts or unresolved issues. This one may be tough, but practicing forgiveness, not just for others but also for yourself, is a game changer for enjoying the holidays more. Letting go of grudges and resentments can free you from stress, allowing you to enjoy the holiday season entirely. This will do wonders for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being! I also find that in our digital age, it’s easy to get caught up in the virtual world, even during the holidays. Make a conscious effort to disconnect from screens and social media. I know this is challenging if you use it for work or business but try instead to focus on face-to-face interactions, genuine conversations, and being fully present with those you meet. Accepting that not every moment will be perfect is perfectly fine! No one is perfect! Embracing the imperfections of the holiday season can lead to unexpected joys and memorable moments, sometimes even laughter! Learn to laugh at yourself, find beauty in chaos, and savor the unique experiences each holiday season brings! When I look back on my life, these are some of my favorite moments! Finding calm and joy during the holidays is not about eliminating stress or challenges but about navigating them with grace and mindfulness. Practicing gratitude, setting realistic expectations, nurturing meaningful connections, and taking care of your well-being, you can survive the holiday season and truly enjoy all the special moments. This is the gift. Life goes by fast, so embrace the season’s spirit, be kind to yourself, and remember that with craziness, the most precious moments are often filled with love, laughter, and genuine connections! Enjoy the moments and the true gift of the season!

During the crazy hustle and bustle, ensure you get enough rest, maintain a balanced diet, and engage in regular exercise such as walking or yoga.

Here is an affirmation for you to repeat in your heart: “In this season, I radiate calm and joy, illuminating the world around me with my smile.”

Even during busy times, carve out time for self-care. A mindful walk in nature, a relaxing bath, meditation, massage therapy (my favorite), or a few

Meet the Whitleys:

HOW THIS COUPLE’S LOVE WENT THE DISTANCE Like many others, this tale begins with a college fling between two young sweethearts. However, in this story, that relationship was doomed to fail. There is a silver lining, though! This short-lived romance is just the first chapter in the book of the Whitley family’s life. The aforementioned “doomed” couple consisted of Megan’s best friend and Dan’s college roommate. They conspired together to introduce Megan and Dan while they were all in Orlando, Florida. One week later, Megan and Dan started dating and have been together ever since. As for the best friend and the roommate - let’s say that relationship expired before graduation. Absence did make the heart grow fonder in the case of this loving pair as they navigated the difficulties of a long-distance relationship. In the early years, they kept their romance alive while attending different colleges. Megan earned an Athletic Training degree in Sports Medicine from George Mason University in Virginia. Dan studied Environmental Science at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina, where his family has a long, illustrious history and deep roots within the school. Post-graduation, Dan served in the Army for eleven years as a Blackhawk Helicopter Crew Chief. For the last six years, he has been serving in the Air National Guard as an F-16 Engine Maintainer. Their deep, soul-stirring connection and strong bond saw them through several years of physical separation from the moment they started dating until they were pronounced husband and wife. Finally, in the same zip code, Megan and Dan found themselves in Virginia when the Army moved Dan to Fort Belvoir in 2009. Virginia felt like home, so they decided to put down roots.

When Megan and Dan got married, they knew that they wanted to start a family together in some capacity. The couple never imagined that they wouldn’t have kids, though they feared, at the time, that they may not be able to have biological offspring. After nine wonderful years of marriage, they decided to pursue the option of fostering children who needed a loving home. They felt a strong pull to give back in some way, and this was the perfect solution for the devoted husband and wife duo who were ready to open their home to a child.

© Best Version Media As fate would have it, on the inaugural day of their foster parent training, they discovered that Megan was pregnant with their first child. Some couples might have decided to ditch the idea of fostering as they faced the challenges of becoming first-time parents, but that was far from the truth for the Whitley family. Over a span of eight years, Megan and Dan took twenty-five foster youths into their Spotsylvania County home. When asked about the experience of being foster parents, this kind-hearted, generous couple says they feel blessed to have participated in the foster care system and to have been a part of these children’s lives. They have since welcomed three beautiful daughters into their family. Camryn, the eldest at seven years old, plays in the Stafford Grass Roots Soccer league. She is crafty and observant and loves cats. Karsyn, their middle child, is four years old. She has a vivid imagination and the sweetest disposition. Parker, their adorable two-year-old, looks up to her big sisters and will try anything she sees them doing. All three girls love to play outside and would spend their entire day outdoors if possible. The family moved to a beautiful neighborhood in Stafford County just over a year and a half ago, in April 2022. They had been keenly interested in that neighborhood since Dan once drove by the area on his way to work at Edward Jones in Downtown Fredericksburg, as it was initially being developed. The timing was right, so the Whitleys made their move. They love their community and consistently participate in local experiences such as outdoor movie nights and fundraising events. Dan even took part as a sponsor for the Downtown Mile for CASA Race last year. The Whitleys are a passionately outdoorsy crew who always make time for camping and hiking. A fall must-visit spot is Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park, where they find joy in a long sunset trek in the crisp autumnal air. They also like to bike on the Canal Path downtown and explore the mountain biking trails along the Rappahannock River and hike local trails such as Government Island in Stafford. In addition to their more rigorous outdoor pursuits, the Whitleys enjoy going on adventures to find the best food trucks in the region. When they aren’t spending quality family time in their Stafford home, the Whitleys enjoy traveling both near and far. When Dan finished his years of active-duty Army service, he and Megan spent a glorious three weeks backpacking through Europe. They took advantage of his extra leave time by eating gelato twice a day every day that they spent in Rome and Capri, Italy, taking in the sights of Paris, France, and reveling in the mountainous splendors of Interlaken, Switzerland. When they want to stay closer to home, they travel to Florida several times a year to visit their loved ones. While spending some time in the Sunshine State, they always go bass fishing, relax on the beach, and occasionally stop at the “Happiest Place on Earth” – Disney World! Through hard work, dedication, and generosity of spirit, these two remarkable people overcame life’s challenges together while giving back so much to their community. It is an incredible gift to foster one child, but the Whitleys have changed the lives of twenty-five amazing foster kids while setting an outstanding example for their own children. Megan and Dan have worked hard to build a great life for their family in this beautiful neighborhood, and they are grateful each day for their good fortune. They are indeed excellent role models and pillars of the community. Megan and Dan’s love story may not have had the most conventional start, but they certainly got their fairytale ending.

Great Grandma Rita’s

GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE

By Liz Hensel, Recipe Provided by Astrid Hensel

My mother-in-law Astrid was born and raised in Germany. Sharing the recipe that she learned from her mother-in-law is so special. Making a German chocolate cake with family is a delightful bonding experience. As we gather in the kitchen, laughter and excitement fill the air. It’s the peak of the holiday season, and our German chocolate cake is the perfect sweet for our dinner. The sweet aroma wafts through the house as we work together, sharing stories and tips. Finally, we all savor the rich, decadent result of our collaborative effort, relishing not just the cake but the cherished moments we’ve created together. It’s a heartwarming tradition that brings us closer and leaves us with both a delicious dessert and beautiful memories. This cake is made in two parts. Part 1: The Cake

Part 2: Coconut Pecan Frosting/Filling

Ingredients • 1/2 cup of boiling water • 4 oz Baker’s German’s Sweet Baking chocolate • 4 large room-temperature eggs • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 cups Granulated sugar • 1 cup Unsalted softened butter • 1 cup Buttermilk • 1 tsp baking soda • 1 tsp Vanilla extract • 1/2 tsp Salt

Ingredients • 1 can 12 oz Evaporated milk • 1 1/2 cups Granulated sugar • 4 large Egg yolks • 2 tsp Vanilla extract • 2 1/2 cups Coconut flakes sweetened • 1 1/2 cups Pecans toasted and chopped • 3/4 cup Unsalted butter • 1/8 tsp salt

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line with parchment paper and grease 3 (8-inch) round cake pans or 2 (9-inch). Set it aside. 2. In a glass measuring cup, microwave the water until boiling. Stir in the chocolate until completely melted and smooth. Set it aside. 3. In a medium-size bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set it aside. 4. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. About 3-4 minutes. Add the eggs (whole eggs, not separated), one at a time, beating well after each addition. 5. Stir in the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla extract. 6. Beat in the flour mixture in thirds alternating with the buttermilk, beating after each addition until smooth. 7. Divide the cake batter evenly into all three prepared cake pans— about 2 1/2 cups of batter for each pan. 8. Bake for 30 minutes or until the cake springs back when lightly pressed in the center. Transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool for at least 15 minutes in the pan. Remove the cakes from the pan to the wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Instructions 1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the evaporated milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and salt. Cook, stirring constantly for 12 minutes, until thickened and golden brown. 2. Remove from the heat and stir in the coconut, pecans, and vanilla. Cool to room temperature. 3. Place one cake layer on a cake plate. Spread one-third of the filling over the top of the cake, leaving a 1/4-inch border. Top with the second layer spread with half of the remaining filling. Place the third layer on top and spread the remaining frosting evenly over the top, leaving the sides of the cake exposed.

S.E.R.V.E.: Nourishing the Community, One Meal at a Time By Mallory Hardgrove, Photos Courtesy of S.E.R.V.E.

Since opening its doors in 1979, Stafford Emergency Relief through Volunteer Efforts (S.E.R.V.E.) has been fulfilling its name, serving Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline Counties, and the City of Fredericksburg. What began as a local initiative has grown into a vital resource for the community, providing nourishment and assistance to those who are food insecure. In addition, S.E.R.V.E. hosts the Dominion Energyshare Program for utility assistance and Health & Wellness Days events in collaboration with local public health organizations. Lee Cheney serves at the helm as Executive Director, while Celeste Young manages the business and finance department, and Michael Chergosky manages operations of the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose vision is “to engage in activities that promote the general health and well-being of our community.” With a history of over 44 years, S.E.R.V.E. is the region’s largest and oldest food pantry. While the philosophy of S.E.R.V.E. is deeply rooted in strategic actions to combat food insecurity and provide emergency relief to those in the area, their mission extends beyond simply providing food. The organization also aims to uplift the community through health-promoting activities and programs that instill hope.

“Those we serve fight every day to provide for their families. They stare at the judgment and walk directly past it– their strength is immeasurable. Inflation devastates them. At S.E.R.V.E., we understand this; therefore, not only do we provide food, we provide dignity.” Despite facing daily challenges, they display remarkable strength, overcoming obstacles and hubris to provide for their families, Cheney summarized. Still, it’s the daily interaction with guests that she enjoys most about her work: “We post a sign that reads ‘Help Yourself.’ To see our guests fill bags of fresh produce and share recipes with one another is incredible. Our guests are like everyone else; they love cooking, watching cooking shows, and feeding their families. They just don’t have enough money to buy it. I look forward to that part of my day, every day.” Connecting with the community allows Cheney and other volunteers to understand their needs firsthand, enabling her to share their stories with supporters– farmers, food donors, volunteers, faithbased organizations, and financial supporters. In this holiday season, staff at S.E.R.V.E. wanted to remind the community that they’re always in dire need of volunteers and support. They welcome individuals and groups, including students, fami-

We post a sign that reads ‘Help Yourself.’ To see our guests fill bags of fresh produce and share recipes with one another is incredible. Our guests are like everyone else; they love cooking, watching cooking shows, and feeding their families. They just don’t have enough money to buy it. I look forward to that part of my day, every day. Nearly 20 years ago, the words, “Food money is a luxury,” struck a chord with Cheney, setting her on a path in the fight against hunger. For Cheney, hunger has no face, no political or cultural bias, but affects all types of individuals, making them choose between bills and basic sustenance. What inspires individual staff and volunteers is the resilience of those S.E.R.V.E. serves. “Humans, by nature, are typically embarrassed or humiliated to ask for help,” Cheney explained.

lies, and civic organizations, to build and distribute Christmas boxes in mid-December and emphasize that monetary donations are crucial. Donators can rest assured that their support directly impacts food operations, with an astounding 97% supporting food operations, providing three meals for every dollar donated. The data shows S.E.R.V.E.’s impact on the community: nearly 3,000 individuals and 400 families receive monthly assistance, a 400% increase in

the past six months. While these numbers may imply many things, Cheney emphasized that the increased numbers summarize what the organization is all about: “No one is turned away.” Amid their serious work, the team brings humor and inspiration to daily operations. Operations Manager Michael Chergosky serves as the guest concierge, listening attentively to the needs of those they serve, while Celeste Young is quick to lighten stressful moments with a joke, often yelling “Welcome to Moe’s!” during more hectic times. As a team, they work together, and they’ve adopted the mantra “All in.” It’s more than a hashtag or slogan for this remarkable team; it encapsulates their dedication and commitment to the community. The staff is all local, except Cheney, and they proudly support local initiatives. Additionally, 99% of their staff and board proudly wear the veteran title and represent all military branches. S.E.R.V.E. is more than just an organization; it’s a lifeline for the community. In the spirit of the holiday season, let’s join their team, be #ALLIN, and ensure no one goes hungry in our community. To go #ALLIN, call 540-288-9603, email them at SERVE@SERVE-helps.org, or visit their website, www.serve-helps.org, to see how you can help.

Toxic Plants to Avoid this Holiday Season By Mallory Hardgrove

Most people enjoy decorating for the holidays. So much, in fact, that many arguments catalyze across the country concerning how early is too early to make home a little more cozy for the holidays. However, if you are a pet owner, proceed with caution. Especially if you’ve welcomed a furry friend since the last holiday season, you may want to look at our list. We’ve compiled the most common holiday plants you want to avoid this year, as they’re toxic to our beloved, four-legged family members: • Poinsettias: This vibrant, classic Christmas plant is undoubtedly one of the most recognized. While severe toxicity is rare, the poinsettia’s milky white sap can irritate a pet’s mouth, leading to excessive drooling and mild gastrointestinal issues. Try a Christmas cactus or artificial decorations instead. • Mistletoe: It doesn’t matter if you “hang it with care,” mistletoe is notorious for its toxicity. The entirety of the plant is toxic to your furry family members, and ingesting it can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress, slow heart rate, and can even be fatal. You may be tempted to simply hang it high, away from your pet’s reach, but if you have a crafty cat, it is merely best to avoid it. • Holly: For your pet to “have a holly jolly Christmas this year,” it’s best to avoid this plant. Holly leaves, and berries are another quintessential

decor item that poses a threat to your pet. Artificial holly should be used as an alternative, as the real deal contains compounds that can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy when ingested. • Amaryllis: These beautiful bulbs with stunning blooms are highly toxic to pets. If a four-legged family member ingests any part of this plant, but especially the bulb, it can lead to severe vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, and even tremors. • African Lily: LIke the amaryllis, ingesting any part of this popular holiday plant can lead to significant stomach and gastrointestinal issues and excessive drooling. Instead, try adding roses or orchids to your holiday decor. • Christmas Trees: Lastly, one of the central pieces of the holiday season necessitates extra caution. While the tree itself is not toxic, the water in the tree stand can contain poisonous fertilizers and other chemicals. Some of the tree decor, like ornaments, lights, and tinsel, especially, are also choking hazards and can cause intestinal obstructions if ingested. Ensure your ornaments are secure– you wouldn’t want a cat to knock off a family heirloom or treasured piece anyway– avoid tinsel altogether, and ensure the tree stand is covered and inaccessible to your pets. Consider one of the following alternatives to keep your house festive but your pets safe this holiday season.

We Can Help bring back it's beauty and your time! • Non-Toxic Plants: The Christmas cactus, a spider plant, or a Boston

WE KNOW YOU TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR HOME.

fern are all non-toxic alternatives that add some greenery to your decor without harming your pet.

We Can Help bring back it's beauty and your time!

• Opt for Artificial: Who said real was better? Opting for an artificial tree will save you money in the long run. Still, it may be the better alternative anyway– especially if your two-legged family members have allergies or you don’t want the upkeep of a real tree. Fake plants can also be reused for years to come.

The Power of Printed Photos By Karen Presecan

“Why should I bother to print my photos?” As a member of PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and VPPA (Virginia Professional Photographer’s Association), I have had opportunities to learn from some of the best photographers in the nation. One common theme I have picked up from all of them is that printed images are important. In my 15 years of being a professional photographer, I’ve more recently seen an increase in clients’ requests for digital files in place of printed images. Admittedly, I’ve gone back and forth between business models of selling digitals or prints. However, my heart is pulled by the importance of displaying family portraits. It has been scientifically proven that when kids see themselves pictured with their family unit, it gives them a sense of happiness, a sense of belonging. As teens, in a time where they tend to be confused, changing, growing, and learning who they are, seeing themselves in their family portrait daily improves their self-esteem and solidifies their sense of belonging. Mental health professionals agree that when children see family images displayed throughout their home, they ultimately feel like they are an important member of their family. They gain the feeling that they matter, their life is important. In the article “Health Benefits of Displaying Family Photos at Home” by Lisa Maccagno, Jaclyn Gulotta, Ph.D. and Vickey Easa, MSW agree that displaying family portraits in the home is a positive action towards self-esteem. Digital images simply don’t have the same effect. When I learned this, it was like a lightbulb moment. It became a big part of my “why.” I had already been displaying family portraits in my home for years,

but now I knew that I wanted to share this with my clients. It makes sense to me. Before I was a photographer, I taught high school students, and I was very aware then of the mental health challenges that kids and teens face. Today, I have my own teens, 19 and 13, and their mental health as well as that of their friends is always in the forefront of my mind. I am not saying that by displaying your portraits you’ll avoid all sadness and/or anxieties in your home. I’m saying that it can help. I can attest that when I walk into my home and see my walls, my heart is full. In 2021 we lost our beautiful family dog of 16 years. I am so thankful that I had our family portrait created with Boomer included in 2019. That image is displayed in a 30-inch by 24-inch frame on a prominent wall in our family room, where we see it every day. I understand all the hesitations: “What do we wear? What size image do want printed? What would look best in our home, a framed print or canvas?” Family portrait sessions should not be, and don’t have to be stressful or overwhelming. A professional photographer will help you through the entire process, from helping with clothing choices, to chosing location options, to helping decide what images to print and what size and format. With a professional, you are getting someone who is planning well before your session date, someone that understands lighting, posing and composition. A professional will get the right combination of posed and candid images, will have asked what images are most important to you, and will capture those for you beautifully.

Christmas Excursions Close to Home

When you think of taking a trip to celebrate Christmas and other winter holidays do you dream of going to Lapland, where you can see real reindeer, visit Santa Claus Village, experience the Aurora Borealis & snow buildings like igloos & ice hotels. Or maybe you dream of a river cruise in Europe to visit the wonderful Christkindlmarkts. For most of us these trips are simply not feasible. They are expensive & many of us have beloved holiday traditions & prefer to be home with family & friends. Well, I am here to share some other options that are much closer to home. Baltimore and Philadelphia both have good Christkindlmarkts. Old town Alexandria is having a Christmas market on December 9th at John Carlyle Square from 11-4. Many nearby towns have parades, with Middleburg, VA having an exceptional one. Things kick off at 8:00 am on December 2nd with breakfast with Santa. The Middleburg Hunt leads the parade at 11:00. Then wrap things up with progressive food, wine, cider, beer & spirit tastings at the many wineries, breweries & distilleries. The Greenbrier & Homestead Resorts go all out with decorations. For a great indulgent experience take tea at one of the many DC hotels - The Willard, The Ritz, The Waldorf-Astoria, The Four Seasons and many more offer this delightful afternoon tradition. The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond is another excellent choice & the Lewis Ginter Gardens offer a spectacular light show. Williamsburg at Christmas is unique. You can walk through the restored area for free and marvel at the door decorations on the houses. All items used for

the decorations have to be things that were found in the 1700’s. Shells, pine cones, apples & other fruit, nuts & greenery adorn the homes with some really outstanding ideas! And there is Busch Gardens Christmas Town, Virginia’s largest Christmas celebration. Rides, shows, food & lights transform the theme park into a winter wonderland. There is always New York! The Rockettes, the Macy’s Christmas windows, the Christmas tree and skating at Rockefeller Center, Central Park, various high rise observatories, Dyker Heights decorations - the list goes on & on. It’s an easy train journey, & not expensive if booked early, & there are many reasonable hotels. My favorite Christmas trip was to Christmas City in Bethlehem, PA. We stayed in the Bethlehem Hotel right in the town center with many shops & restaurants nearby. The Moravians founded this town and are probably best known for their delicious Moravian cookies (very thin & crispy spice cookies) & the 26 pointed Moravian star. They also have a very good Christkindlmarkt. I hope I have given you some ideas for Christmas experiences. I have a wealth of travel knowledge from living in 5 countries & visiting 41 states & 32 countries. Nourishing Hearts and Minds: Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank’s Compassionate Mission

In the heart of our region, the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank (FRFB) stands as a beacon of hope dedicated to combating hunger. Through the efforts of dedicated staff and volunteers like LaToya Brown, Health Equity Coordinator, and Dan Maher, President & CEO, this organization has been a lifeline for the community since 1982. Their commitment to fighting hunger has only grown stronger as they work with approximately 150 community partners, collectively striving to address food insecurity in Caroline, King George, Orange, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties and the City of Fredericksburg. LaToya Brown is a passionate advocate, and her journey with FRFB initially started through her employment at Virginia Cares (one of FRFB’s partners), working with returning citizens and helping them reintegrate into the community. That experience laid the foundation for her subsequent roles within the organization and her current position as Health Equity Coordinator. As LaToya says, “I believe food is a universal love language; to fight hunger and offer healthy, nutritious food to those who need it most is one of the greatest expressions of love.”

“Employees and volunteers within the food banking network often stay involved for years because the mission constantly evolves and the work is highly engaging. Once you get drawn into food banking, it is hard to imagine moving on to another kind of work and finding it as satisfying,” he added. But they can’t solve the problem of hunger without you. “It takes the entire community engaging with a food bank’s work to truly make a difference because the scale of hunger is enormous,” explained Dan. “I cannot solve hunger; even dozens of employees and thousands of volunteers cannot. The community has to have the will to pull together, share its existing resources, redistribute those more equitably, and help those lacking food access to make greater strides towards self-sufficiency for a real difference to be made.” If you’d like to help alleviate hunger and make a difference, check out their upcoming events, including their Turkeys and Toys Drive-Thru Distribution. This event will take place on December 16 from 10 am to 2 pm at Virginia Credit Union Stadium, and stay tuned for their annual “Canstruction” at Spotsylvania Towne Center in March. This yearly competition involves businesses, schools, and organizations building creative structures out of non-perishable food, later donated to the Food Bank, promoting creativity and community engagement.

Dan Maher joined the FRFB in early 2021, bringing experience from his tenure at the Southeast Texas Food Bank in Beaumont, Texas. Dan’s dedication to alleviating hunger in the community is driven by the universal empathy “we all share for those who experience hunger.” He firmly believes in “creating a pathway to adequate nutrition for as many people as possible.”

The mission and philosophy of the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank stems from its core values: respect, diversity, stewardship, accountability, collaboration, teamwork, service, integrity, and advocacy. These principles guide their efforts daily and keep the community at the heart of their work.

The impact of the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank is substantial, serving over 50,000 people across their service territory ensuring those in need have access to nourishing food.

Food is intrinsically linked to health, and “we are committed to caring for the health of those we serve by creating equitable access to food that will nourish their well-being, not feed disease,” said LaToya. “Everything we do, we do in hopes that the individuals who depend on our services will be positively impacted by how we serve them and what we provide,” LaToya stated. “I enjoy meeting our neighbors. They remind me of the importance of community and how strong and resilient the human spirit is.” Dan echoed this sentiment and added, “Our real bottom line is creating a pathway to adequate nutrition for as many people as possible.” In addition to helping others, Dan enjoys how this work catalyzes others, saying it “stirs up something inside you.”

The scale of hunger is immense, and no single entity can solve it alone. If you’d like to be a part of the solution, visit www.fredfood.org, where you can support the food bank’s mission through financial contributions, volunteering your time and skills, or donating to the next food drive. Dan and LaToya also encourage anyone in need to download the FredFoodVA app, which allows people to find distribution sites near them and conveniently timed for their needs. Along with their committed team, LaToya Brown and Dan Maher, work tirelessly to nourish the bodies, hearts, and minds of those they serve. Their message is clear: to truly combat hunger, it takes the whole community working together, sharing resources, and advocating for those in need. Through their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment, the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank continues to make a profound difference in the lives of thousands.

Want a 昀椀nancial advisor that knows your name? I moved to Fredericksburg in 2012 after transitioning out of the U.S. Army, where I was a Blackhawk Helicopter Crewchief. I still serve one weekend each month in the U.S. Air National Guard as an F-16 Maintainer. Our city is a wonderful place to raise a family, and you may see me on some of our biking trails, at a local BBQ restaurant, or at an Ice Cream shop downtown with my wife and three daughters. I am passionate about taking the opportunity to really make a difference in the lives of the local families and small business owners I work with by taking the time to listen and 昀椀nd out what is truly important to them. corner IT ’S FIVE O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE COCKTAIL

Andean Solstice Fusion

By Liz Hensel

When it comes to the holidays, my absolute favorite thing is that everything sparkles! Much to my husband’s dismay, I am a glitter gal. Therefore, it was so much fun creating this cocktail to bring a little glitter to the drinks this holiday season. Inca Gold Wine is a sweet table wine that is fused with passionfruit and mango, the two most popular fruits of Peru. Ingredients • 1 bottle of Inca Gold Wine • 1 can of Cranberry Juice • 1 bag Cranberries • Fresh Rosemary • Ice cube trays • Edible gold glitter Instructions 1. Grab your ice cube tray and put two to three cranberries in a slot, add the rosemary on top, and then cover with cranberry juice. 2. When ready to serve, grab a wine glass, and pour Inca Gold Wine at the halfway mark. 3. Add two to three infused ice cubes. 4. Add a dash of the edible gold glitter. 5. Swirl and ready to serve. Note: I let my tray freeze overnight to get the most potent taste. To find out more about Inca Gold Wine and how to order make sure to follow them on Instagram @incagoldwine Do you have some fun cocktails to add to our cocktail corner, email them to mhardgrove@bestversionmedia.com

ATTENTION! Colder and wetter than normal weather is expected this season.

Materials: • Three popsicle sticks • Brown construction paper • Yellow construction paper • Green paint or marker • Buttons, glitter, or any fun small items to make your ornament sparkle. • Scissors • Glue • String Directions: 1. Grab your three popsicle sticks and glue them to shape a triangle to form your Christmas tree color it in with your green paint or marker. 2. Grab your brown construction cut a small rectangle, and glue it to the bottom of your triangle as that will be the base of your tree. 3. Grab the buttons, glitter, and any knick-knacks and start gluing them on your tree. 4. Take your yellow construction paper and cut out a star, which you will glue at the top of your tree. 5.
