November 2nd is a distinct part of Mexican culture as well as also being celebrated in parts of the United States such as Los Angeles.
Students made papel picado, which is tissue paper, cut out in distinct shapes and patterns to adorn a traditional altar that was created in their classroom. The altar contains pictures of relatives who have passed away as well as candles, food that loved ones enjoyed, yellow marigolds and skeletons! Students really enjoyed having their very own altar in their classroom!

It was a wonderful family event that encourages a healthy, active lifestyle for all involved. The event was designed to encourage participation and expose
Thankful This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?
Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and
Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

With homes and businesses destroyed, a gasoline shortage plus some people still without power and heat nine days after Hurricane Sandy, many New York soccer leagues have cancelled games for the foreseeable future. The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and Region I, both under the umbrella of the United States Youth Soccer Association, are providing relief to soccer clubs and leagues adversely affected by the hurricane. Region 1 is offering up to $2,000 in grants and ENYYSA will match every grant approved by Region I. Applications must be returned to the ENYYSA office at 53 North Park Avenue, Suite 103, Rockville Centre, NY 11570, prior to the Region I, December 15th deadline. The application is attached. “Many of our members have suffered a tremendous amount of hardship from Hurricane Sandy. It’s times like these that all Americans, including the soccer community, come together to help,” commented ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. “We applaud Region I’s generosity in helping those adversely affected and Eastern New York will match every grant they approve for our members.”

dozen workers from Texas, Colorado and Florida contacted Mercy about the need for shelter from the gathering nor’easter, they stated, “The hospital just said to come on down and rolled out the red carpet for us.” Mercy’s Environmental Services Department quickly and efficiently set up dormitory space near the hospital’s Emergency Department. It was the second time Mercy’s environmental services team was called to action to set up temporary
shelter during the ongoing weather emergency. In advance of the hurricane, the hospital took in 40 patients evacuated from Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and 25 patients evacuated from a nursing home in Long Beach. Good Samaritan’s patients were returned to that facility shortly after Sandy passed, but Mercy has continued to provide housing for the nursing home patients more than a week after the storm.

Employee Relief Fund Hospital and health care workers on Long Island and in other coastal areas of New York City and New Jersey were among the hardest hit by superstorm Sandy and thousands suffered devastating personal loss of homes and property. The Hurricane Sandy Health Care Employee Relief Fund was just established through the cooperative work of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS), the Greater New York Hospital Association, and the American Hospital Association, with the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC), the organization that represents all Long Island hospitals, supporting the fund’s local efforts on Long Island. The charitable contributions will be managed by the United Hospital Fund and funds collected will provide
direct assistance to employees impacted by the storm. Funds raised will be distributed through hospitals and health care organizations. Other associations involved in this national fund raising effort include the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association, New Jersey Hospital Association, the Iroquois Healthcare Alliance, Rochester Regional Healthcare Association, and Western New York Healthcare Association. “Hospital employees demonstrated tremendous dedication during this crisis,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of the NSHC. “These individuals suffered serious personal loss – many are now homeless – even as they worked to ensure the safety of those in their care. The fund is intended to assist those health care workers so that they will
continue to be there for us when we need their care and expertise.” The Hospital Council and other sponsoring associations ask everyone to spread the word about this fund and consider donating to the Hurricane Sandy Health Care Employee Relief Fund. Dahill added that the fund is an excellent way for any patient or family member who has received exceptional health care services in the past to show their appreciation for this care by helping these health care workers’ colleagues rebuild their lives. These past few weeks has been a catastrophic episode in the lives of so many in our Long Island community. House early Christmas traditions and period music dominate the cozy interior. At the Ann Currie-Bell House there will be demonstrations of traditional holiday craft making, including embroidery, rug hooking, and knitting. In the Bay View Schoolhouse the old fashioned cast iron stove will rumble away as children seated nearby create custom ornaments to decorate the school tree. Musicians stroll the grounds in period costume while visitors wander between the many other buildings, including the Print Shop, Blacksmith Shop, Corncrib, Icehouse, and others. A special group of refreshments will be available to all who attend the Tour in the Pine Neck Barn Annex. The lighting of the Hamlet Christmas Tree, which is looked forward to by all, will take
place in front of the Ann Currie-Bell House at 5 p.m. At the Society’s Prince Building, located on Main Road opposite Rothman’s Department Store, the Society’s consignment shop, the Treasure Exchange, will be open late (till 6 p.m.) for all those who wish to shop for the perfect Christmas gift or holiday item as will the Museum Gift Shop which is stocked with all sorts of wonderful holiday gift ideas, including ornaments, books, children's toys. The Society's new building, the Reichert Family Center & Cosden Price Gallery, will also be open for visitors to see the current exhibition of paintings by Orient artist George W. Hallock (19161984). With Santa and his elves in the old Pine Neck Barn and the blacksmith beating away in the Cleveland-Gagen Blacksmith Shop it must be time again for the Annual Candlelight Tour and Tree Lighting at the Southold Historical Society. The Tour takes place the day after Thanksgiving, November 23rd, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Society’s Maple Lane Museum Complex in Southold. “This is one of the most fun and entertaining events of the year,” stated Society Director Geoffrey K. Fleming, “It gives the Historical Society a chance to show off the great ingenuity and decorating expertise of its volunteers,” he continued. Each year a different group of local residents decorate the various areas of the Museum Complex. The Tour is as exciting for children as it is for the adults. Each period

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. We Hempstead Shelter: are taking donations to help with costs of boarding if for some reason Hempstead Animal Shelter is in desperate need of newspaper, towwe can’t find a foster home. It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance.

What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

Memorial Dedication
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently helped dedicate a memorial site to honor Henry H. Preston, who served our nation during the Civil War and as Suffolk County’s first salaried Sheriff from 1903 to 1906. DeMarco joined with descendants of Henry Preston, including his
great-great grandson, Arthur Bloom, and other public officials at today’s ceremony. The event was held at Preston Plaza in front of the Shelter Island Police Station. During the ceremony, Sheriff DeMarco remarked on the life of Sheriff Preston: “Like thousands of his fellow soldiers, he was injured during the
Civil War and suffered from pain throughout his life. His service and devotion to his country, in itself, makes him a hero.” The memorial was constructed out of a granite boulder which originated from the site of the former 19th-century Griffing Avenue jail in Riverhead.

Scouts Host Out-Of-State Crews The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council has opened its camp in Baiting Hollow to power crew workers who have travelled to Long Island from out of state to help in the restoration of electricity to Suffolk County. Up to 200 workers are being hosted at Suffolk County Council’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. The dining hall, which annually feeds thousands of Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, is now a combination of barracks and mess hall for these workers. Crews from as far away as California are staying at camp, enjoying hot meals, showers, and
clean beds. The camp is also providing laundry service for the crews. Thanks to the help of Scouting volunteers and camp staff, the crews have warm shelter from the cold as they continue to work to restore power to Long Islanders. The camp will remain available to these visiting workers for as long as needed. With area hotels already overfilled, the Boy Scouts of America is happy to assist in hosting power crews and workers as Long Island recovers from Hurricane Sandy. In addition, the Suffolk County Council is also coordinating food and clothing drives with
volunteers through the county in preparation for the holidays and upcoming winter. Each year, the Boy Scouts of America Scouting for Food drive collects and distributes over 80,000 lbs. of food to local pantries. This year they will double their efforts in anticipation of the needs of food pantries and kitchens following Hurricane Sandy.
