Farewell To A Legend By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over.

Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era.

But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships

and racking up countless milestones along the way.

Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York.

Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore.

To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as

relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right?

Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness.

And what a privilege it was.

AUTUMN ARRIVAL - The kindergarten students at Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip celebrated the arrival of the crisp, autumn season recently. Mrs. Scali’s and Mrs. Messmer’s classes participated in various hands-on, apple-themed activities. The kindergartners read stories about the legendary American pioneer Johnny Appleseed and learned how apples grow. The children sorted apples and enjoyed a taste of red, yellow and green varieties. They then selected their favorite type of apple and created a class picture graph. As the culminating event, the kindergartners helped make homemade applesauce and enjoyed the special treat for snack!

This year’s event will honor Gerard Scollan, principal owner and CEO of Lovin’ Oven Celebrations and Aaron Liebowitz, former Executive Director of ACLD. Mr. Scollan was selected as this year’s dinner honoree because he has worked closely for 15 years in supporting UCP of Suffolk and the success of its fund raising efforts. In addition to his

longstanding involvement with UCP of Suffolk, Mr. Gerard has been a benefactor to other Long Island organizations such as City Harvest, The Ronald McDonald Family Room at Stony Brook Hospital, Patchogue YMCA, Bellport Boys & Girls Club, and NYC Outbound Schools.

Mr. Liebowitz was selected as the Life Without Limits Award recipient for his dedication and commitment to helping individuals with disabilities lead more productive and independent lives.
