uring a unit study on animals and their habitats, firstgrade students at West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School observed the life cycle of a chicken firsthand, including the 21-day incubation period and concluding with hatching of the chicks. As part of the activity, students kept an “egg to chick” journal, where they wrote about the development of the chicks.

Scientific Study the students were able to observe each shark’s flexible cartilage skeleton, even removing a section of the spine in order to examine the spinal cord and individual vertebrae.

They also investigated the shark’s “sixth sense” by showing students an organ known as the ampullae of Lorenzini, which sharks use to detect electrical fields emitted by the movement of animals.

Finally, they looked at the unique reproductive system of the shark, in which young develop within the body of the female. In each specimen they dissected, they found pups in the animal’s reproductive tract.

The sharks were humanely obtained as bycatch from a local fishery, then frozen and SCIENTIFIC STUDY - Seventh-graders in Brian Daniels’ science class at Beach thawed prior to dissection. Street Middle School recently dissected sharks as part of a hands-on lab experience.

Seven West Islip High School business students successfully competed in the 54th Annual New York State DECA Career Conference, held from March 8th-11th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center in Rochester.

DECA is a co-curricular, student-centered organization with the purpose of providing learning opportunities to marketing education students through goaloriented chapter activities.

Participation in these activities serves to develop greater understanding and appreciation of marketing, management and entrepreneurship.

The Career Conference highlighted several DECA goals, including civic consciousness, social intelligence, leadership development and vocational understanding.

Accompanied by chapter adviser Diana Saadat and mathematics teacher Tara Annunziata, West Islip’s DECA chapter was joined at the conference by more than 2,000 other students

A Buddy for Buddy Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits…

So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know…

The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me!

Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail.

I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins.

The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters.

I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

“The students did amazingly well,” said Saadat. “It’s nice to take home medals, but their behavior, motivation and enthusiasm is what truly makes me proud to be their adviser.”

While seniors DiStefano and Leonard were sad that this was the last year they would be competing in Rochester, DECA

goes. This could be shortlived.

Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me.

‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate.

During a unit study on animals and their habitats, first-grade students at West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School observed the life cycle of a chicken firsthand, including the 21-day

incubation period and concluding hatching of the chicks.

As part of the activity, students kept an “egg to chick” journal, where they wrote about the development of the chicks.

“What excited the students most was that they were able to handle the chicks,” said Principal Dawn Morrison. “They also really enjoyed watching the life cycle in action.”

Seventh- and eighthgraders at West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School participated in the school’s first-ever Career Day during lunch periods on March 31st, in which members of the community came to the school to meet with students, talk about their respective careers and answer questions.

Workshops included presentations on fields such as law, social work, engineering, cosmetology, banking, finance, speech pathology, law enforcement and orthodontics, presented by representatives from local businesses including Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Vitagliano Orthodontics and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

“The students who participated in the workshops thoroughly enjoyed gaining the knowledge they need as they begin to chart their career path at the high school,” said Principal Daniel Marquardt.

Commish Visits Students in West Islip High School’s business and personal law classes were treated to an April 12th visit from a special guest speaker and alumnus, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini.
