Tara Conner is a Television Personality and Recovery Advocate. Through her work, she shares her experience, strength and hope with audiences throughout the United States. Conner was crowned Miss USA in 2006. During December of that year, she entered the Caron Treatment Center and completed 30 days of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. Deadline Extended In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York. FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015

semester. “FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. “HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state. We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program

before the February 20th deadline.” Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can

pursue either on a fulltime or part-time basis. Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they

complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in

their local community. The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the new semester has been extended to February 20th. FASNY HELP is made possible by a $4.2 million dollar U.S. Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant awarded to FASNY. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called. If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right? So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes. It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant inﬂux of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on. Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately. In a timely manner.

MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Most of these stories only continue to circulate because people like Glenn pass them on. What is funny about that is that’s exactly how the music of jazz grew, by word of mouth. For me, meeting and hearing people like Glenn as a young musician inspired me to continue to work to keep America’s true art form of jazz alive and well. I am so happy and thankful that our students have been afforded the same opportunity as I was, and I can already see and hear results.”

On January 14th the St. John the Baptist D.H.S. Jazz Ensemble had the great opportunity of playing with Jazz Musician Glenn Drewes. Mr. Drewes, a West Babylon native, eagerly shared his musical talent with our students. Mr. Drewes taught a master class to the students in the Jazz Ensemble led by Performing Arts Department Chair Mr. Chris Donohue. Life Jacket Loaners

OLL IN ACTION - Our Lady of Lourdes in West Islip celebrated Catholic Schools Week from January 25th-30th. Prospective families were welcome to tour the school to see Our Lady of Lourdes in action. During the week there were many activities planned for the students. One of the activities the students participated in was the human board game. The students had a great time playing and working together throughout the game.

The Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner program has been funded through donations and grants since its inception in 2008. Since then, more than 28,500 free life jackets have been loaned to boaters through the program. “Life jacket loaner programs are most often used by boaters who forgot to pack their own life jackets or decided at the last minute to invite a friend to go boating and didn’t have a life jacket that would fit him or her,” said Sea Tow Foundation

Executive Director Gail R. Kulp, CAE. “These new life jacket loaner stations will be open in time for the 2015 summer boating season so that boaters around the country can have the opportunity to borrow a life jacket for a day out on the water.” Life jacket loaner program applications now are being accepted through March 1st, 2015. In order to become an Eagle Scout, a young man must exhibit leadership, talent, character and perseverance. GUEST SPEAKER - Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt recently addressed members of the Long Island Business Development Council (LIBDC) at a monthly dinner meeting held at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip. Councilwoman Bergin Weichbrodt took the opportunity to emphasize the Town’s continued commitment to bringing new businesses to the area, as well as aiding existing businesses looking to expand, citing the assistance and support provided by the Islip Industrial Development Agency, that in 2014 alone, induced a record 27 new projects, which helped to create 1700 jobs, while retaining 669.

The Sea Tow Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations and boating agencies throughout the country to host a life jacket loaner program in their local area through a new grant from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Sea Tow Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization with the mission of promoting safe boating practices.
