Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horticulture on Long Island by helping to further the education of worthy students planning a career in the field.

Students interested in applying for these scholarships can find more information and an application on the LIHS website at www.lihort. org. Applications will be accepted until March 1st, 2015.

The LIHS meets monthly at Planting Fields Arboretum and offers year-round educational programs, events and tours of gardens here and abroad. Membership is open to all Long Island gardeners whether they are professionals, enthusiastic amateurs, or just like to stop and smell the roses.

Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult.

In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again.

Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

School Receives Grant St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that it has won a $25,000 award from the Celebrate My Drive Grant program powered by State Farm®.

This grant is the result of St. John’s finishing among the top 100 out of 3,283 registered high schools in an online competition in which students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members made commitments to drive safely.

The effort was led by the St. John the Baptist S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club and was embraced by the entire school community.

A portion of the grant money will be used to fund a program that will bring awareness of the dangers of texting while driving to the school community.

“This award is a testament to the magnificent school community here at St. John’s.” said Assistant Principal Darius Penikas.

“Through this program we were able to bring awareness to a very important issue and express our commitment to driver safety; we would like to thank State Farm® and the Celebrate My Drive program for this wonderful opportunity.”

Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death

for teens and the first year behind the wheel is the most dangerous. Celebrate My Drive is an opportunity to celebrate new drivers and the freedom as well as the responsibility that comes with earning a driver’s license. It’s a chance for teens and their high schools to amplify conversations about this important topic and help be part of the solution.

Keep Islip Clean marked its 25th Anniversary in December with a celebration hosted by the Seatuck Environmental Association at the historic Scully Estate in Islip.

Over 125 volunteers and supporters toasted KIC’s quarter century of keeping every hamlet in the Town of Islip clean, green and litterfree. Former Chairman Bill Johnston and his wife Gloria were presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for over 20 years of service, by KIC’s incoming

In addition to Mrs. Erwood, other Executive Board officers were sworn in by Judge Lawrence Donohue (retired). Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly

disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season.

In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally.

SBPLI representatives, team mentors, volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants

shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program.

After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components - and only limited instructions.

Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program,

and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge.

Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 26th-28th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored

by SBPLI, which has also sponsored the Long Island Regional FRC for the past sixteen years.
