A group of published Long Island writers has formed an organization to be known as the “Long Island Authors’ Circle.”

The newly established ‘LIAC’ is currently composed of six charter members who have been published individually in virtually every fiction and non-fiction genre; from poetry and drama, to journalism and novels.

The core group consists of four women and two men who hail from St. James, Northport, Dix Hills, Massapequa Park, and Smithtown. Their varied backgrounds include: Town Councilwoman, Newspaper Publisher, College Professor, Literary Critic, Businessman, and Television Personality.

Purpose of the Authors’ Circle is the exchange of information and ideas valuable to members in the execution and furtherance of their respective writing crafts. Communication is conducted primarily via email, though physical meetings are held when proposed and unanimously agreed to by the charter participants.

Each of the core members may sponsor new Long Island candidates for membership if they have been published. When unanimously approved, nominees are invited to join the organization.

The “Long Island Authors’ Circle” has no mandatory meetings or dues; no officers, committees, or elections; no by-laws ... and participation in the group’s activities is at all times strictly voluntary.

My First Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan ‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about.

I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion.

Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…

I decided I had better get something to show my appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude!

Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some flashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting!

My human has promised me

a proper shopping spree after the new year, and I can’t wait.

Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go.

No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of flakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades.

All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle!

South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently completed a Unity Mural project. Thanks to the school’s PTA Cultural Arts program, artist/ author-in-residence Joyce Raimondo, in conjunction with South Bay art teacher Melinda Fischer, provided an opportunity for all South Bay students to have a hand in the creation of the mural during their art classes.

The mural depicts aspects of the growth mindset being explored and implemented in West Babylon schools this year.

The scenarios in the mural are meant to show that individuals with a growth mindset know mistakes are opportunities to learn and discover, practice is necessary and desirable if one is to attain mastery of a skill, and multiple creative approaches exist to accomplish one’s goals. The mural will be displayed in the South Bay School main corridor.

Babylon School District was the recipient of more than 1,700 book donations thanks to the efforts of the Babylon Teachers’ Association and the Read Across Our Community initiative. The district participates in the New York State United Te a c h e r s - A m e r i c a n Federation of Teachers program to provide access to books to eligible needy Title I children and organizations in the community.

Babylon’s three buildings are currently all entitled to Title I funding.

“Due to the help and support of the Board of Education, our administration and staff, we were able to connect with the First Book program for donations to all of our schools,” said Robert Richardelli, president of the Babylon Teachers’ Association. “Literacy is a district-wide initiative and this effort will help to foster literacy in our community starting in the elementary schools and working up through the high school.”

School club members, student and staff volunteers spent the afternoon of December 16th sorting through the books by grade level, boxing and distributing them to the appropriate grades. Books will be used for many different district literacy initiatives such as Parents As Reading Partners, the summer reading program and the Pre-K program.

“Babylon educators are so committed to our core belief that every teacher is a teacher of reading,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi.

Friday was AHRC’s second time working in tandem with the

camp. Russell Smith, an instructor at AHRC, said the two organizations began working together via a suggestion from the camp’s Treasurer, Newt Homan, who works for Suffolk County Transportation, transporting the AHRC students.

Advisory Board Meets Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently attended the inaugural meeting of the West Babylon High School Business Advisory Board (BAB). The meeting took place at the school’s library, where introductory presentations were made before the members of the West Babylon Main Street Organization.

The creation of the BAB was spearheaded by the faculty of the Business Education Department, in order to create a vibrant networking system between the high school and the local business community. Due to the increasingly competitive job market, the BAB’s founders believe that with such a network

students could not only have the opportunity to explore their future career options, but maybe even get a leg up when looking for a job.

“The creation of the Business Advisory Board is great news for the students of West Babylon High,” said McCaffrey.

“We constantly hear that networking is the key to finding good jobs, but sometimes it is difficult to figure out how to begin that process. Now the students will have a powerful resource at their disposal to help plan their career paths.”

In addition to receiving an overview of the mission and goals of the BAB, those attending were treated to a special

student presentation by Louie Mazza. With the aid of a PowerPoint slideshow, Louie explained the role that social media has in the business world with respect to its ability to increase profitability.

Louie showed examples of effective social media advertisements from nearby businesses, including his own family’s startup jewelry business.

“Louie is a rising star in the community, and he is a testament to the dynamic business education department here at West Babylon High,” added McCaffrey. “I am eager to learn about the future accomplishments of the Business Advisory Board and plan to help it meet its goals.”

Representatives from Google brought the adventures of the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program to Babylon Memorial Grade School on December 14th for a virtual reality field trip. Using a smart phone and the Google Cardboard viewers, which are made entirely of cardboard, each student took a virtual reality trip that brings abstract concepts to life and offers a deeper understanding

of the world beyond the classroom.

During library and computer classes throughout the day, teachers were able to choose from thousands of places to take their classes — from biomes across the world to Gettysburg — without stepping foot outside the school. The trips are collections of virtual reality panoramas — 360-degree photo spheres, 3D images and

Virtual Adventures video, and ambient sounds.

“Special thanks to Google for letting the students of the Babylon UFSD be the first students on Long Island to explore this new technology,” said Linda Rozzi, Babylon School District superintendent of schools.

New Volunteers Continued From 12 when they attended summer sessions. “My favorite parts of camp were dancing, the talent shows and the camp fires,” said Crystal Concepion, a firsttime volunteer, who plans to return and help the camp prepare for winter in the coming weeks.

Camp Director Bridget Costello hopes to expand the volunteer program to former campers outside of AHRC to further foster the

connection between camp and camper.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a summer and respite camp for children and young adults with physical and mental special needs. Since the camp hosts respite sessions and fundraising events throughout the year, volunteers are always needed for various events.

CHI also secured housing for the Harrises, a family of five – including children aged five, 16 and 17. The family signed the lease on the house in Bellport, New York during Thursday’s press conference with Mr. Bellone. The Harrises, who have been without a home for 14 months due to no-fault job loss and a sudden rent increase more than 30 percent, will move into their new house today, just in time to enjoy the holidays.

“It’s always hard to deal with homelessness; this

is my first time going through this,” added Nathaniel Harris, father of the family. “It’s really embarrassing when you struggle even though you work so hard. I worked all of my life. So, to receive this opportunity, that somebody heard me, actually heard me, is amazing. I appreciate everybody who participated in making this happen for me.

As the largest provider of housing for the homeless in suburban New York, CHI connected with Mr. Bellone and the team at Bed Bath & Beyond to encourage individuals, families

and businesses alike to purchase gift cards.

One hundred percent of this anonymous, taxdeductible donation will be given to a family or individual currently living in a local shelter in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess and Orange Counties to purchase household items once they move to permanent housing.

Donors will receive an acknowledgment of their contribution for tax purposes, along with a personal letter from the family who benefitted from the donation.

“There are 600 families in Suffolk County alone who are homeless, that’s

a total of over 2,000 people,” said Alexander Roberts, Executive Director of CHI, during the press conference.

“CHI serves 1,000 homeless people every night. We want to help these people as much as possible, and now we have another vehicle to do so.

You can help us provide a little bit of joy to our families, too. Thank you to Mr. Bellone for helping raise awareness of this initiative and also for his personal donation to the program.”
