The Salvation Army traditional Red Kettle Holiday Program will begin soon and is in need of volunteers to ring the bells at the Red Kettles, as well as musicians & singers. Many locations are available, including local grocery stores, shopping centers and malls. When volunteers fall short, we hire paid bell ringers at $9 per hour. Table Top Red Kettles are smaller versions can be placed on a retail counter or at your place of work or business. The Salvation Army Angel Tree is a unique way of giving holiday gifts and needed clothing to deserving children on a more personal basis. Angel Tree Tags are placed on a traditional Christmas Tree, usually located at a mall or shopping center. Each tag has the child’s age, sex, clothing sizes and a wish list of toys, gifts and clothing needed. While many malls continue the tradition, we have many companies and office buildings that have set up Angel Tress with great success! Remember, 89 to 95 cents of every dollar collected goes directly toward the many Salvation Army programs. The Salvation Army Adult Rehab Centers (ARC), like the one in Hempstead which can house up to 100 recovering from drug & alcohol abuse, receives its funding from donations of clothing & household items that are sold in thrift stores, as well donations of cars, trucks and boats. Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign held each year to raise awareness about drug prevention in the community. In an effort to include the children in the fight against drugs, October 21st through October 25th, they are celebrating this year’s theme “A Healthy Me Is Drug Free.” The PTA Red Ribbon Committee organized a week of activities, which began on Monday, October 21st at 10 a.m. with a ceremony held on the blacktop between JFK and South Bay Schools. The students gathered and pledged to remain healthy and drug-free. All parents, family members and friends were invited to attend the ceremony and join in the fight against drugs. ANIMAL HOSPITAL
The American Red Cross has awarded a $500,000 grant to FEGS Health and Human Services to support mental health and education services for children affected by Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. The funding will be used to help an estimated 150 children in Nassau and Suffolk counties who lost part of their academic school year due to stormrelated challenges, such as housing displacement and/or trauma caused by the storm. “FEGS is enormously appreciative of the support of the American Red Cross,” said Gail A. Magaliff, CEO of FEGS. “Children who are still struggling across Long Island will now receive academic tutoring and trauma counseling from FEGS and its partners.

Evolving Over Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make
eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college
students are these days. Me. Of all people. They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

plan includes upgrades to roofs, heating and ventilation systems, electrical systems, and numerous other areas of building integrity. Projects will also address significant health, security and safety needs, as well as ADA compliance factors. Instructional spaces, including science labs, technology workshops and art classrooms, will receive upgrades to meet the district’s curriculum focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. The high school’s antiquated band room, chorus room and ancillary spaces will also be completely renovated and major updates will be made to Rowe Hall, which is not only used regularly by students but the larger community. Locker rooms at the high school will be revamped and the gym spaces at the high school and grade school will also be addressed. Major upgrades to athletic fields are also included in the proposed project. “Funding for the types of repairs and upgrades needed districtwide simply are not possible as part of our annual operating budget,” said Board of Education President Roger Katz. “By packaging our needs together through a bond, we will not only be able to effectively address current realities but also do so through a means of prudent financing.” The total anticipated cost of the project is $26.6 million. Of this amount, 46.3 percent will be funded through New York State building aid. For the average household in the district, the project would cost approximately $2 a month during the initial year of the bond. When the financial phasein is complete in 2018, the project will cost the average homeowner approximately $25.41 a month for the remainder of the term of the bond. Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis said, “Many of these spaces and building systems have simply reached the end of their lifespans and temporary repairs are no longer a viable option. This plan will enable us to preserve the integrity of
our buildings and ensure they are ready to meet our students’ 21st century learning needs.” Polls will be opening from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Babylon Memorial Grade School on Dec. 10 for registered voters to cast their ballots on this referendum. West Babylon School District celebrated Homecoming on October 19th, kicking off the day’s festivities with a parade, followed by a football game and the school’s Homecoming dance. The annual parade began at West Babylon High School with the West Babylon Fire Department leading the way. The high school marching band performed while the student floats made their way down the street. The senior and sophomore classes created a city landscape while the junior and freshmen classes made a beach and ocean landscape. Following the student floats were the members of the homecoming court, including Homecoming King John Modica and Queen Madeline Vasquez, and the West Babylon cheerleaders. The parade came to an end when it reached West Babylon Junior High School for the homecoming football game. Following West Babylon tradition, West Babylon elementary school students took to the field prior to kickoff,
