Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process.

Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day.

And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case

may be.

Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat.

As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play.

Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

FUN FIELD TRIP - During the winter break from school, Harding Avenue Brownie Troop 343 took a field trip to Yo Luv It in West Babylon. The girls were able to take a tour of the facility, and they learned how to make the frozen yogurt. After the tour, they were all able to make their own frozen yogurt treats with toppings and had a great day together at a terrific establishment. Thanks to everyone for the fun at Yo Luv It.

BULLYING Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t.

Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them.

Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me.

If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations.

When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day.

If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.”

If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately.

Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you.

Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying.

In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying.

Bullying is a serious subject.

Special Performance On February 16th, at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fischer Hall, twelve senior choral students participated in a one-night production of Jason Robert Brown’s Parade conducted by the composer.

This concert performance of Parade featured a chorus of over 200 singers from the across the United States. It also combined the forces of the New York City Chamber Orchestra as well as a full professional Broadway cast

which included Jeremy Jordan as Leo Frank, Laura Benanti as Lucille Frank, Katie Rose Clark as Mrs. Phagan and many more.

Prior to Monday evening’s performance, students attended three fast-paced rehearsals to prepare for the show.

Jared Berry, Director of Choirs, stated, “As the students said, this was a life-changing musical experience.

They had the opportunity to be in the chorus of a

concertized Broadway show in a prominent venue with a star-studded cast. Musically it is unforgettable, but students also had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the cast and production team to learn more about their path to a successful career. They also attended a cast party with them where they were able to discuss the show with the team, take pictures and get autographs.”

At Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, the Student Council has come up with a unique way of motivating SSCM students to participate in a food and non-perishable items drive for SSCM’s Parish Outreach food pantry. Hosting a contest this past week for open participation, they paired up various grades and then pitted the teams against one another to see which team can be the first to stock up 100 non-perishable items for donation to SSCM’s Parish Outreach.

Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island. Across Long Island, combined parish ministries include thousands of volunteers and serve as many as 75,000 people in need each year. Particularly in cold weather, the services that such parish ministries offer to the surrounding communities become even more invaluable to those in need.

Community Service is an overriding theme within the walls of Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School. With the school offering a variety of volunteer opportunities to explore each year, SSCM students benefit from the experience they gain during these activities

The first course, entitled “About Boating Safety,” will be held at West Babylon High School on Tuesdays, March 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st from 6:30 to 9 p.m. This course meets the requirements of the new NYS Boating Law, which went into effect in May 2014. This Safe Boating Course is designed for beginners and/or experienced boaters who would like to sharpen their Boating Skills.

Topics covered include boating safety, navigation, aids to navigation, trailering, common boating problems, required safety equipment, etc. This course will also include instruction on PWC’s. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Certificate acceptable to New York State for operation of recreational boats and Personal Water Crafts (PWC).

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve

equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.

Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating.

The camp is located on Chet Swezey Road in Center Moriches.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is hosting five open house sessions for prospective campers and families of children and young adults with special needs in March, April and May. Parents should bring their child if he/she will be a new camper, in order to allow them to get a sense of the camp and what they will experience throughout the summer.

During the tour, parents will have a chance to meet the staff — the camp’s director, nurse and office manager — and ask questions or address any concerns that they might have. They will have the opportunity to view the entire camp and explore the different areas dedicated for various activities such as arts and crafts, adaptive sports, games, etc.
