Local Olympians Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone sends congratulations to local athletes who are participating in the XXII Olympic Winter Games.

Among the estimated 2,500 athletes competing in the games in Sochi, Russia are: lugers Aidan Kelly of West Islip and Matt Mortensen of Huntington Station and skeleton slider John Daly of Smithtown.

“We are proud to have such a strong contingent of Suffolk County residents who will represent their country on such an international stage,” Bellone said. “They have all worked hard to get where they are and deserve a great deal of credit for their achievements. We will all be rooting for them throughout the Olympics.”

What Dreams May Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Do you dream? Better yet, do you remember these abstract visions once you awaken? Do they make any sense, or are they simply random collections of people in mystery places, moving wordlessly through your subconscious with no clear direction or purpose?

I once took a class on the Philosophy of Dreams in college, where the sole objective was to keep a dream book and analyze its contents week-to-week, drawing conclusions from whatever images may have manifest themselves overnight.

To say there were many interesting – disturbing, even – discussions would be an understatement.

And those were just the dreams my fellow students recalled!

A dream is a wish your heart makes, or so the saying goes – but what of nightmares and other less desirable visions? What do they mean? Should any conclusions be drawn, or are they simply beyond the scope of human comprehension? And what of the dreams that fall into oblivion, never to be revisited again?

I often find myself falling into and out of various

states of sleep, tossing and turning from one bizarre dream to the next, vaguely aware of the people and places surrounding me, but rarely discerning any viable plot from the whole scenario. The thing is, I rarely recall these visions by the time the new day dawns. There and gone, perhaps to be revisited at a later date. Or not.

It’s a fairly exciting concept, when you stop and think of the mysterious majesty of it all – the subconscious, delving into the unconscious, and back again. Too deep? Brain on overload? Maybe it’s time for a little nap!

The final two teams will meet in a best of seven game series on Sunday April 27th to battle it out for their portion of the Charity Victory Pot. The Charity Victory Pot starts at $1,000 and will increase as participation and sponsorship grows.

The pot will be split 70/30 between the winning team and the runner up with the winnings being donated to each team’s specified charity.

The day will be filled with fun, raffles, special guests and other surprises as it is also the day BCBA celebrates its 10 Year Anniversary.

Games will be held at BCBA operating out of the Westbrook Elementary School at 350 Higbie Lane, West Islip, NY. BCBA is a recognized 501 C-3

all volunteer nonprofit organization (Community Boxing Center, Inc.).

BCBA has been providing Long Island’s youth with innovative, well-rounded, athletic programs since 2004.

Their D.R.I.F.T. Youth Empowerment Programs focus on the natural virtues of Devotion, Respect, Integrity, Fairness and Temperance. Their programs are designed to prepare kids to become champions in life by focusing on beating childhood obesity, building self confidence and teaching self-reliance.

BCBA | Bettinelli’s Community Boxing Academy proudly presents the Charity Dodge Ball Challenge beginning Tuesday, March 11th.

The Charity Dodge Ball Challenge is a spirited dodge ball tournament open to 12 teams. Teams are made up of 6 players plus 2 subs.

Participating squads will be split into two divisions, Red and Blue. Teams will battle it out over a 6 week season with each division meeting once a week for season play.

Those in the Red Division will play on Tuesday nights from 8 to 9:30 p.m. while teams in the Blue Division will play on Thursday nights from 8 to 9:30 p.m.

All teams will play 3 games a week and are playing for local charities that they have chosen to represent prior to the start of the season.

Players must be at least 15 years of age and will be asked to sign a player waiver.

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez joined with Councilman Tom Donnelly and Town Clerk Carol Quirk to induct the Town of Babylon Youth Court’s Class of 2014. The Youth Court oath was administered by Deputy Supervisor Martinez to the eight new inductees in attendance.

The Town of Babylon Youth Court serves

to reduce juvenile delinquency through positive peer influence and allows first time offenders of violations or misdemeanors under the age of 16 to be heard by a jury made up of those close in age to them. The Youth Court is made up of students between the ages of 14 and 18 who have completed a multi-week training program.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory is highlighting African American inventors in a student essay contest in honor of African American History Month.

The contest invites students in grades 6, 7 and 8 to write about an African American inventor and discuss how his/ her life or invention affects them personally. One student will be selected as an honorary ‘Legislator for a Day’ to spend one day in Suffolk County government with Presiding Officer Gregory.

“African American History Month provides an opportunity to focus on the contributions of African Americans,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “This contest will give students a chance to discover the ingenuity and inventions of African American inventors of today as well as throughout our nation’s history.”

The deadline for submissions is February 25th.

Nursing Home Artists Honored Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared.

Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2014 calendar, “Art from the Heart.”

The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Residents of approximately 280 NYSHFA/NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities around the state were invited to submit artwork.

Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York.

Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL

member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 50 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany.

Ranging in age from 52 to 93, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes.

“Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.”

After the loss of someone very close, those around us are caring and concerned, making every effort to shield us from the hurt, and try to lessen our heartbreak.

But at times, it just takes a quiet moment with a special someone or discovering something, anything, offering comfort or some relief from the grief, loneliness and unbearable ache.

The “something” could be as simple as the warmth of an old, somewhat worn and familiar cup filled with hot and inviting morning coffee.

It appears as though each sip relieves some of the pain, even sharing the anguish while stirring emotions which, not surprisingly, leave you feeling a little drained and empty.

Adding a bit of sugar is a little reminder to reflect on those sweet times you shared in your life together, understanding that right now nothing seems quite right, nor appears to make any sense.

As you stir your coffee, inhale the aroma and savor your memories, knowing the cup will soon be empty; and although there will always be an empty place in your heart, the images of the life you shared will gradually replace the sorrow.

Listen to a sort of musical reminder as the spoon circles and brushes against the sides of the cup, and you will never forget that you will always cherish and embrace your old memories, while knowing the cup may empty today, but will fill with new memories each tomorrow.

For now, just wake each morning with the thought “good morning sweetheart….let’s have a nice cup of coffee.”

Soup-er Sports In the spirit of the Super Bowl and doing one’s best to help the team, student council officers of Santapogue and South Bay elementary schools in the West Babylon Union Free School District organized a Super Bowl-themed food drive, the “Soup-er Bowl,”

to benefit a local food pantry.

During the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII, staff and students were encouraged to donate food items and place them in the basket of the team they believed would reign victorious on February

2nd.

Baskets bearing logos for the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks overflowed with food donations by the end of the week thanks to the generosity of local families and staff who helped those in need.

No Name Calling

During the week of January 20th, students in West Babylon Union Free School District took part in No Name Calling Week, an annual campaign aimed at fostering an environment in which will not be tolerated in schools.

Throughout the district, students participated in a multitude of events and activities that encouraged these efforts.

In addition, two junior high school students introduced the Butterfly Project, where Post-it notes with complimentary and encouraging phrases were taped to each students’ locker in an effort to remind them of the beautiful qualities they

have, much like the wings of a butterfly.

The week was a success as district students came together in support of the anti-bullying campaign.

This sense of unity helps to create an environment in which all students can comfortably be themselves.
