So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year.

Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we

realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run.

Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently.

Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely.

And then there are the roads.

Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter.

Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it.

Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward.

There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough.

Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

In an effort to further study just how powerful the human mind can truly be, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students enrolled within Dr. Mark Malaszczyk’s recently reintroduced Advanced Placement Psychology course were treated to a special visit from certified

hypnotherapist and Babylon JSHS parent, Eileen Berry.

During the workshop, Mrs. Berry shared information pertaining to hypnosis, saying that most clients utilize hypnotherapy in order to change negative behaviors and maximize skills. Such factors that

a client might need help with are assistance with quitting smoking, weight management and stress management.

“A common misconception of hypnosis is that a person will be able to be controlled entirely,” said Mrs. Berry. “However, this is not true, as the

conscious mind will not allow an individual to do something that they know to be wrong.”

After taking part in an activity that asked participants to concentrate on the swinging of a handheld pendulum, the class was asked to participate in a soothing mediation session to help ease their minds and prepare them for the rest of the day.

Watch Out For the Post-Holiday “Blues”

But, also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Christmas joy to all year round. Because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile!

The Babylon JuniorSenior High School recently started collecting food items through the “Rock CAN Roll” food drive initiative in an effort to help out the less fortunate members of the community during the holiday season.

According to their website, Rock CAN Roll, Inc., is a nonprofit hunger relief organization and think tank. They

often collaborate with rock concerts, schools, corporations and private individuals to collect healthy, nonperishable food and basic necessities for distribution.

The school’s drive will run throughout the course of the weeks leading up to the holidays, during which students and staff members will be able to donate items such as canned soups, mixes and pasta.

“The food items that the students collect are going to be distributed to local charities, such as the United Methodist Church of Babylon, before being sent out on a wider scale,” said Babylon Junior-Senior High School Principal Al Cirone. “We’re a small, tight-knit district, so we do everything we can to ensure that community families are happy around the holidays.”
