While not everyone can venture to New York City’s famed Times Square to watch the ball drop in person, millions tune in around the world to watch it on television.

Original celebrations in New York centered around listening to the bells of Trinity Church ring at midnight, but the New Year’s Eve celebrations were later moved to the New York Times building in 1904. Fireworks were part of those celebrations, but hot ash and sparks falling on spectators led to a ban on fireworks, and event organizers needed another spectacle to draw crowds, according to PBS. Publisher Adolph Ochs asked his chief electrician Walter Palmer to create

something visually appealing. Inspired by the maritime tradition of dropping a time ball at harbor so that sailors could set their own timepieces while at sea, Palmer devised the idea of dropping an illuminated ball on New Year’s Eve. This has been tradition since 1907.

3. Delay income. For those who are freelancers or independent contractors, consider holding off on billing or invoicing clients until January. Delaying any billing until January will keep that income off your 2019 tax return. Thus, delaying paying taxes on that income until next year.

4. Defer your bonus. Who doesn’t love to see more green at the end of the year?

While year-end bonuses

are nice, they can be quiet costly if that extra money bumps you into a higher tax bracket. To avoid this happening, try having your bonus deferred until January 2020.

5. Install solar panels. Did you know that you can score a tax break by simply being environmentally conscious? Before 2019 wraps up, consider installing solar panels or other energy-efficient features to earn a tax credit of up to 30 percent of the installment cost. This may be the last year to score this rate as the 30 percent rate is set to drop in 2020 and may be phased out completely by 2022 for residential customers.

In collaboration with members of the American Legion, Post 1738 and the Dennis P. Keenan Foundation, SJB students, staff, and volunteers sorted, packed, and mailed over 200 care packages to our Troops from various branches of the military; both overseas and within the United States.

This is the third year SJB has hosted a “Pack-Out.” This year’s items were

based off of the need for basic care products, as well as items requested by the troops in prior years. We received a variety of items: socks, insoles for boots, foot powder, toothbrushes and toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, deodorant, shampoo, baby wipes, various snacks, and individual packets of powdered drink mix. This project was at no cost to SJB. All of the items

were donated through our current students, alumnus, the American Legion, and friends of SJB. The Peace and Justice Club and members of SJB Boys Basketball team assembled all of the boxes prior to being filled, and some of our Seniors filled out the shipping labels and custom forms ahead of time as well. This year’s event was spotlighted on Catholic Faith Network (CFN.)
