The outdoor drive was held at the Keith Avenue playground in West Islip on Sunday, Dec.13th. Over 1500 gifts were collected over the course of the season. The Helping Hands founder Jennifer Gallozzi and her husband "Santa" Bob Gallozzi posed for pictures with the children.

Hands founder Jennifer Gallozzi and her husband "Santa" Bob Gallozzi posed for pictures with the children. Their daughters Jaime Adinolfi, Jodie, and Jannah Gallozzi fitted children for their holiday dresses and picked up donations from the staff at Macy's in Bayshore,

and PetSmart in Babylon whom donated stuffed toys from their customers.

Children, moms and dads jammed the street with donations.

Volunteers sorted and prepared the gifts for distribution to local families,Youth Enrichment, Suburban

Upcoming Vote To Sell West Islip School District Masera Building On Jan. 19, West Islip School District registered voters will take to the polls to cast their ballots on a special proposal to sell the Emil D. Masera property to Terwilliger & Bartone Properties LLC. The contract of sale between the District and Terwilliger & Bartone Properties LLC was adopted by the board of education this past September and the district has conducted several public meetings to discuss the details of the sale. However, for the sale to be finalized, it will require approval from the community.

Polls will be open to registered voters on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the West Islip High School gymnasium. Absentee ballots are also available

Applebee’s locations in Long Island recently announced the 22nd annual fundraising campaign to raise funds in support of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, which distributes new toys to as many underprivileged children as possible to provide a tangible sign of hope during the Christmas season.

New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations

Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New

York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations.

Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving.

This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty

surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter.

New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,

but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19.

Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area.

“The entire foundation

of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone.

Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H.

Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”
