Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close.

Let’s begin at the beginning.

When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third.

Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done.

I learned to hate my own

name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself.

When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad?

No, because words are words and they don’t affect me.

My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy.

We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing.

At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words.

My hobbies, besides writing,

include playing video games and streaming on Twitch.

Like most people, I wish I could change some of the things that I have done. People ask me what I want to do when I grow up. Some people say, “You’ll be a bum on the streets.” I don’t listen to them because they’re the same ones who think drugs are good.

After everything I’ve learned, there is no better mystery than life itself. What’s the point of living? It’s to achieve your life’s goals. My goal is to be a great YouTuber; I know I can. * Names changed to protect students’ right to privacy.

It’s the holiday season so families are getting set for decorating Christmas trees, menorahs, shopping, caroling plus receiving mail from non-profit organizations looking for donations.

But the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is that rare non-profit group not looking for money and is actually giving it back during the holidays.

Eastern New York gave a dollar back for every registered player to each respective league to use it as they saw fit for the benefit of their players.

So the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) received a check for $58,614 for their 58,614 players, the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) received a check for $16,946, etc.

“I stated that when I became President in 2010, we would bring

fiscal responsibility to Eastern New York and I believe that our Board of Directors has done exactly that,” commented Eastern New York President Richard Christiano. “Our fiscal responsibility has now allowed us to give a rebate back for every player.”

“This rebate further demonstrates the commitment of our Eastern New York state association to its member leagues,” commented LIJSL President Anthony Maresco.

“East Hudson was very pleased that the Eastern New York Board of Directors, when deciding how best to use its considerable assets, thought to share it with its members via a rebate,” offered EHYSL President Jim Purdy. “The Eastern New York leadership is to be commended for taking this action and our hope

is that as long as the state’s financial status remains positive, this will become an annual event.”

Capital District Youth Soccer League (CDYSL) President Tim Owens, whose league received a check for $10,035, added, “The CDYSL is very grateful and appreciative to Eastern New York for this money. We look forward to reinvesting these funds back into the soccer community.”

I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner.

Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $12,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Student Assistance Programs - Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) and Teen Intervene.

Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of these evidence based-programs designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner.

The TGFD prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. Teen Intervene, a psychoeducation intervention

model, addresses teens experiencing mild to moderate problems associated with alcohol or other drug use.

“We are so grateful to The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for supporting these important programs.

LICADD will continue to participate in community meetings and network with a variety of youth-serving agencies to promote service coordination, collaboration and innovation” says Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2015 it is estimated that 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and men.

Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women which means that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.

The Fifth Annual Breast

Cancer Summit recently took place to address these statistics and to open dialogue with cancer experts. The annual event is hosted by Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, PC as a free community service program and focuses on patient education, providing an overview of the latest developments in detection, treatment and reconstruction.

World Kindness West Islip’s Beach Street Middle School’s Helping Hands Club and counseling department celebrated World Kindness Day on November 13th with a special banner.

Driven by the World Kindness Movement, the annual event is recognized in numerous countries, with people around the world demonstrating

consideration of others.

At Beach Street, the Helping Hands Club decorated the building with signs to encourage kindness. Counselor Mitch Luquer led schoolwide morning kindness messages for discussion.

Fellow counselor Katie Crowley and the Helping Hands Club made a presentation in each

cafeteria period that culminated with every student taking a positive character pledge and signing the banner.

“Our World Kindness banner will be displayed in the school as a constant reminder that we can make a difference in this world through kindness,” said Principal Andrew O’Farrell.

LEARNING THE MEANING - Captain Anthony Caruso of the United States Army Reserve, father of a Kindergarten student at Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip, spoke to the Kindergarten and 8th grade students about the meaning of Veterans Day and the history of our armed forces. Captain Caruso served overseas in Operation Iraqui Freedom. He brought along a slideshow presentation,various pieces of equipment and uniforms for the students to try on, as well as sample meal rations. The students were very excited about meeting a “real live” soldier!

Photo by: West Islip School District Members of the Islip Town Board recently selected four local charities to receive funds collected at the annual Entenmann’s Great South Bay Run. Each year, the run is held in the Town of Islip with the help of the organization Tri-ing for Kids, a nonprofit organization with the mission of motivating people to achieve a personal goal of completing endurance

events for a cause much bigger than medal or prize. This organization, led by Doug Rabin, lets individuals compete for a cause, raising funds to be donated after each race.

This year’s race was held on October 3rd, and even despite poor weather conditions, Tri-ing for Kids was able to raise enough money to donate $750 to the four charities of the Councilmember’s

choosing.

This year’s charities chosen were The Morgan Center, Emily’s Gift, Veterans of Foreign War of the U.S. R. Murray and C.R. Day Jr. Post 8357, and the EJ Autism Foundation. The Town Board congratulated and thanked members of each organization by presenting them with a Town of Islip Certificate of Recognition and a large check.

Ticket Amnesty Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced in late October that the Islip Town Board had authorized a parking ticket amnesty program.

That program began on November 15th, 2015 and is coming to an end. The last day for this program will be December 31st, 2015.

Under the program the

town will allow scofflaws to pay only 60 percent of their fines and penalties on unpaid parking tickets issued between January 1st, 2008 and September 30th, 2015.

This is the town’s first parking ticket amnesty program in three years and is being implemented

by FBS Inc., of Hempstead, the town’s authorized

collection service.

“We’d like to remind our residents that this amnesty period is coming to a close.

We encourage residents to take advantage of this program before it is too late to do so,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Seeking Crew Leader Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is looking to fill an AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leader to assist with home builds throughout the County.

Habitat, in partnership with AmeriCorps members, hopes to reach its goal of completing 12 new home builds. Habitat also anticipates to host at least two community events and will utilize members to spread the word about homeownership programs and encourage community members to get involved as volunteers on worksites or to apply to be family partners.

The Construction Crew Leader is an integral part of building homes and completes hands on construction tasks such

as demolition, site prep, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping. The Construction Crew Leader works with new and gut rehab homes, as well as A Brush With Kindness (ABWK), Critical Home Repair (CHR) and weatherization projects.

AmeriCorps members will gain valuable leadership skills, as well as career and life skills that translate directly into job experience. Fulltime members will receive multiple benefits including a living allowance, health insurance, job training and personal and professional growth opportunities.

A beautiful crisp fall weekend met the athletes and spectators at the USA Luge Senior National Championship on Saturday, November 7th and Sunday, November 8th at Olympic Park in Park City, Utah. A drop in temperatures made for perfect sliding conditions.

Hard ice equals fast times, and race conditions yielded almost a full second faster than in training.

The weekend race held greater meaning than just the title of National Champion; it was a race within a race and the ability to travel the Fall World Cup circuit for two of the athletes competing.

2014 Sochi Olympian, Aidan Kelly of West Islip, had his 2015 season abruptly curtailed when a hard crash resulted in a flight home from Norway and surgery to be performed. Aidan was

looking for a comeback and was certainly the underdog. Following the results of Seeding Race #1, held on October 30th in Lake Placid, NY, Aidan was sitting on the bubble in fourth place. Taylor Morris of Salt Lake City was sitting in third (the funded traveling spot).

Aidan capitalized on the hard ice conditions and placed 1st in both heats of Seeding Race #2. Aidan’s sled was clocked at 83.2 mph and 82.9 mph on runs 1 and 2, respectively.

Aidan’s fourth place finish on October 30th and first place finish on November 7th tallied 160 points, edging out teammate; Taylor Morris, who finished third and second, for a total of 155 points.

Saturday’s race (Seeding Race #2) guaranteed Aidan the opportunity to slide on the World Cup Circuit.

Blood Donations Needed The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to end the year with real meaning by donating blood for hospital patients in need.

Holiday activities, severe weather and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, can pull people away from their regular blood donation schedules. This creates a greater need for blood donations this time of year, especially around the winter holidays. To encourage donations, all those who come to donate December 23rd,

2015, through January 3rd, 2016, will get a longsleeve Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.

Jamie Czesak made her first blood donation on December 27th, 2013. “As I spent Christmas with my family, I realized how lucky I was to have my health and how we never really know when our last Christmas will be. I decided that I would face my fears and do one of the few things I can do to help save someone’s life donate blood.”
