West Islip Senior Named National Merit Semifinalist

West Islip High School senior Asfar Chaudhry has been named a semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. High school juniors entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state, according to the National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly

$28 million that will be offered next spring.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced in between April and in July. These scholarship recipients will join nearly 368,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title, according to the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Program Promotes A Positive Culture For Middle Schoolers

From Sept. 19-23, West Islip School District’s two middle schools – Udall Road and Beach Street – celebrated “Start with Hello Week.” Start with Hello is part of the Sandy Hook Promise, which develops programs to help students feel connected and safe in the school setting. There were daily themes at each of the schools to promote togetherness, inclusiveness and promote a positive culture in the

buildings.

For example, students participated in a scavenger hunt during their lunch periods. Students were given a scavenger hunt sheet and walked around to meet new people with similar likes and interests. Another day, random acts of kindness were written and displayed around the cafeteria. Students were encouraged to act out various random acts of kindness and spread

kindness to others.

On Sept. 21, faculty, staff and students were encouraged to wear green or yellow, the colors of Start with Hello, and to show school and community unity. Students were challenged to reach out and say hello to five new people. To close out the week, faculty, staff and students showed their school pride and wore blue and gold.

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought 4-Session Training In November

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The fourday training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary. This in-depth training

includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities; deliver educational presentations and

speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

2022 Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival

At Hempstead Lake State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are pleased to announce the Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival will be held at Hempstead Lake State Park, on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00AM – 4:00PM

The fishing license requirement for all anglers over the age of 16 is suspended for this festival and admission and parking are free. Festival activities include fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services to all participants. A “Casting for Pumpkins” event for children will be provided

by the Seaford Knights of Columbus. Activities are provided by I FISH NY and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Corporate sponsors include Renewal by Andersen of Long Island, New York Life and Veolia.

Prior to the festival, South and McDonald Ponds will be stocked with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. The high concentration of stocked trout should provide a great opportunity to introduce your family to the wonderful sport of freshwater fishing. American Cancer Society Announces The 29th Year Of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer On Long Island

A Celebration Of Courage And Supportive Communities Returns In Person In 2022

The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement, will unite residents across Long Island on October 16th, at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5.

In its 29th year, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement embraces a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, while raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. “Thanks in large part to the decades of work and the dollars raised, a breast cancer diagnosis does not come without hope, and the breast cancer journey is not one that has to be traveled alone,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director, Development.

This year, female breast

cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with more than 287,000 women

diagnosed. Men are also impacted by breast cancer, with an estimated 2,710 men expected to receive a diagnosis in 2022.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and

guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.

October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.

October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.

Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation. Since 1893, they have been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are blind, have low vision or combined hearing and vision loss. Their mission is to enable individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, have vision loss, or hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in the communities of their choice.

Our Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) is located in Port Washington and is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

West Islip Resident And Veteran Turns 103!

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron was honored to celebrate with lifelong West Islip resident Estelle Kaczanowski at his office to mark her 103rd birthday. She turned 103 on August 11th and lives in the house where she was born and raised with her six siblings. She has had a full life of commitment to

her career and family.

Estelle served her country during World War II earning the rank of Nurse – 1st Lieutenant for the Army from April, 1945 to September, 1947 and her bravery and dedication continued throughout her chosen career as a nurse. She was stationed at Fort Sills in Oklahoma and Fort

Hood in Texas.

In 1940, she was one of the first nurses hired at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore working in Labor and Delivery and one of the first nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip in 1959 until retiring in 1981 where she was in charge of the Maternity Unit.

2022 Annual Jake K Foundation Zombie Run!

The Jake K Foundation (JKF) is pleased to announce our 2022 annual “Zombie Run” to be held on Saturday, October 8th at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon. Join us for the Zombie Run 5k, a run or walk to benefit the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation (the JKF)“Reducing the barriers to recovery.”  Run with us in person on race day, or join us from anywhere in the world by using our virtual option.

The Mission of JKF is to bridge the gap for those affected and effected by Substance Use Disorder (Addiction) who are ready and willing to seek a solution. We are closing the gaps in the recovery road through education, connection,

while providing resources to those without access to resources. Funds donated to JKF are used to support entry funding and transportation to recovery facilities that use a peer community model that teaches a solution that have a program duration of four months or longer.

People in active drug and alcohol addiction will do damage to their families, end up in an institution, in jail, die, or they work to build recovery. We create opportunities for people to take their lives back.

Participants will receive a long sleeve race t-shirt with our zombie race logo. Awards will go to the top overall male and female runners, plus the top winners in age groups.

Costume Contest. Think you got what it takes to be the greatest zombie in the bunch?  Wear your finest Zombie garb to the event!  Our panel of undead experts will pick their favorites and award $50 Amazon gift cards to the six best costumes.  Criteria for winning will be determined by the panel, based on which costumes make us laugh, cry, scare us, or binge watch the Walking Dead.
