Horseshoe Crabs: Blue-Blooded Laboratory Stars, will be presented by Dr. John Tanacredi, at the South Shore Audubon Society Meeting on Tuesday, October 10th @ 7:30 PM. The program will be at the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 W. Merrick Road (at S. Ocean Avenue). Dr. Tanacredi has tracked up to 115 locations for Horseshoe Crab breeding conditions and habitat on Long Island, and will discuss why they and their habitats are so important.
He is Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Director of CERCOM (Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring) at Molloy University, and a founding member of the IUCN SSC Horseshoe Crab Specialist Group.

Town Celebrates 6th Class Of Law Enforcement Academy Cadets
The Town of Islip Law Enforcement Academy graduates its 6th class of cadets. The robust 14-weeklong Academy is led by NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certified instructors, and has been built from the ground up to better prepare recruits and current officers for service in the Town and beyond.
As a point of pride, the DCJS has recommended the Town’s academy to other law enforcement agencies. The Town
graduated a total of 16 cadets hailing from the Town of Islip, the Towns of Smithtown, Babylon, as well as from Suffolk County.
“We are so fortunate in the Town of Islip that our Public Safety Division is comprised of individuals with the skills and resources necessary to build, grow and conduct its own in-house training Academy,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.
Classroom instruction focuses on law, ethics, communication, daily defensive tactics, as well as de-escalation, Narcan, CPR, First Aid training and more.
“We are proud of our dedicated and knowledgeable instructors, alongside Chief Thomas Lohmann from Smithtown Public Safety, for the invaluable training they provide; we are proud of all our cadets and officers who complete this training,
becoming better equipped to serve our residents and the public; and we look on with pride watching the Academy continue to grow as one of the ‘go to’ training facilities in the area,” said the Supervisor.

West Islip’s Unique Offerings
Showcasing the district’s many unique and innovative offerings, West Islip School District hosted a tour with Sen. Alexis Weik and Bob Vecchio, executive director of Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association on Sept. 15. Led by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Romanelli, the West Islip administrative team and board of education members visited with teachers and students at West Islip High School during the morning tour.
Dr. Romanelli spoke about the shift in the future of education and how West Islip’s programs are a true reflection of the recently developed profile of a graduate. The tour began with Dennis Pope, CTE teacher, and Brian Buonomo, lead teacher for engineering technology, who spoke about the many STEM offerings at the high school level including architecture/ CAD, robotics, the automotive program, manufacturing partnerships and a state-of-theart manufacturing lab on site.
The Little Lions preschool program was the next stop on the tour. Different from the district’s universal prekindergarten program, the purpose of Little Lions is
to provide a well-rounded educational experience for children to learn, grow and form friendships while affording an opportunity for high school students enrolled in child study classes to work directly with young children. This program is open to 3- and 4-year-olds in the West Islip School District and is led by Nancy Silvestrini.
Teacher Tom Vitti showed off the high school’s planetarium, which has served students throughout the district as well as community members since
it opened its doors in 1966. Guests had the opportunity to see some of the many exciting features of the space. To close out the tour, teacher Ron Weber opened up the news studio to show off the many different opportunities students have to work the camera, audio, editing, photography and broadcasting via the daily announcements. West Islip focuses on teaching its students the many handson skills they need to set them up for success in their future career paths.
