Preservation Long Island Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary With Special Events And Programs Through December 2023
Preservation Long Island is delighted to announce its 75th year in operation as the only regional not-forprofit organization dedicated to historic preservation on geographic Long Island. From events and exhibitions to preservation advocacy and on-site student education, their wide-ranging programs connect Long Islanders to the region’s diverse and distinctive past.
To help celebrate this 75th Anniversary milestone, special events are planned including, a new exhibition, and redesigned house tours and special programs at Preservation Long Island’s historic properties across Long Island.
Originally founded in 1948 as the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, the organization adopted Preservation Long Island as a new name in 2017 to communicate more plainly its commitment to advancing
the importance of preserving all facets of the region’s history through advocacy, education, and stewardship of historic sites and collections.
Preservation Long Island’s approach to historic preservation on Long island is comprehensive and includes:
• Interpreting three Preservation Long Island owned historic sites in Suffolk County.
• Providing free advisory services in communities across Long Island for individuals and groups engaged in local preservation efforts. Advocacy work includes the Endangered Historic Places Program and Preservation Awards.
• Maintaining exceptional examples of regional material culture.
Preservation Long Island’s collections of over 8,000 objects and archival materials is considered
one of the most significant regional assemblages of decorative arts and objects in New York State. Hundreds of images from the collection are now available to browse online.
• Developing exhibitions that explore Long Island’s remarkable material and cultural past at their headquartersGallery in Cold Spring Harbor.
• Presenting innovative educational programs about local history and the built environment at Preservation Long Island owned historic properties as well as onsite programs for school groups.
• Publishing scholarly works and books.
Preservation Long Island’s ground-breaking publications on Long Island history and decorative arts remain the
go-to sources for studying Long Island’s heritage.

Angie Carpenter, Islip Town Supervisor invited Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, along with ADAs and Detectives from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Bureau and the Suffolk County PD Financial Crimes Unit to the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center in East Islip, for a seminar on how to
prevent identity theft. Participants learned valuable information on “what identity theft is; what can be done with one’s identity; how does it happen; can we help prevent it and what can I do if it happens to me.”
The District Attorney’s Office will be presenting this program at various Town of Islip Senior

Culminates
In A Touching Art Exhibit In Honor Of World Alzheimer’s Day – September 21, 2023
The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) is proud to announce an inspiring Art Exhibit in collaboration with the Islip Arts Council in Bay Shore, New York. Artwork will be showcased beginning September 18 –September 30 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. A reception recognizing the artists with their family members will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Art Gallery located in the Westfield Shopping Center, Bay Shore, NY at the end by DICK’S Sporting Goods. This exhibition marks the culmination of a yearlong art program, for over 100 local artists, that has spanned multiple sites across Long Island.
The Art Expression Program, a cornerstone initiative of ADRC, has
provided a profound avenue for individuals to engage their minds through the transformative power of art. This innovative program has consistently aimed to achieve the following objectives:
• Facilitating Communication through Diverse Art Forms: Participants are encouraged to communicate their thoughts and emotions through a wide array of artistic mediums, fostering connections beyond words.
• Mind Stimulation through Creative Creation: The act of creation stimulates participants’ cognitive faculties, invigorating their mental capacities.
• Boosting Self-Esteem through Relational Bonds: The program has
nurtured self-esteem by fostering meaningful relationships and interactions within a supportive community.
• Celebrating Artistic Diversity: ADRC embraces and celebrates every artwork created by participants, recognizing the uniqueness and personal stories behind each piece.
In the eloquent words of Therapy Techniques Using the Creative Arts (2002), “The creative arts stimulate our senses, our bodies, our thoughts, and feelings. For a period, we transcend the bounds of time, space, and physical limitations. Outside our normal realm of existence, we are free to think, feel, and express what seems natural to us.”
Each artwork on
display carries the weight of unique memories, rekindling a tapestry of lived experiences.
ADRC is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers FREE services and programs to families throughout Long Island. Our mission is to provide care, support, and educational programs for families in need, and to be advocates for local families who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. All funds raised stay on Long Island. In 2022, ADRC served over 1000 families with care consultations, support groups, educational workshops, and therapy programs.
