Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014.

The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.

According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks.

The former World Trade Center site was decimated by the attacks. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were part of the New York skyline for more than 40 years.

In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001.

• Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m.

• Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11.

• Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost.

• Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001.

• Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs.

• Attend a special service commemorating 9-11 at houses of worship.

• Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home.

This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11.

Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

Islip Department will present planetarium show on Science a fall community Thursday, Sept. 19 from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Following the presentation, held in the high school’s planetarium, night sky telescope observing will be available, weather permitting.

Emphasis will be on the sun, moon, stars, planets, constellations and signs of the zodiac, as seen from West Islip.

“Come and join your fellow community members to see the wonders of the night sky at our planetarium, which has been in operation since the 1960s,” said earth science and astronomy teacher Thomas Vitti.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population.

You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck.

One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence.

Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

it to the recipient right in his hometown!

The recipient was filled with joy and loves his new scooter.

They are presently looking for wish applicants in the Long Island area.

Elected To New York State Honorary Office It is not very often that the American Legion Auxiliary Junior members are elected to a New York State Honorary office, but this year 2019-2020, Suffolk County had 2 members elected for office.

Suffolk County Past 10th District Chairman and current Junior Chairman Erin Horn escorted 9

American Legion Auxiliary Juniors to Albany recently.

Their mission was to attend, a New York State wide meeting of other Junior members and to help others. The forty girls that attended were from ages 8-17 years old. They planned and executed several volunteer activities to help veterans

and their families during the conference. The girls brought boxes and bags full of items to donate to Guardian House, a local women’s veterans shelter in the area. Some of the items included clothing, gift cards, toiletries, assorted greeting cards, linens, pocket books and so much more that were

sorted and packed for delivery. The girls painted 200 large stones that had messages or art work on them that they shared with Seniors. Many took some home to leave in local areas like parks for others to find. The girls spent several days together, painting pinky’s blue for the Dept presidents

Lay Named Assistant Principal Lauren Lay has been named the new assistant principal at West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School.

Lay replaces Robyn Southard, an interim assistant principal who has now returned to her position as a school psychologist for the West Islip School District.

Lay had worked since 2013 as an English and ENL teacher at the Longwood School District, and previously served as an English teacher for the MUSICIANS EARN FOUR TROPHIES - Music ensembles from West Islip’s Beach New York City Department Street Middle School and Udall Road Middle School took home three Superior rating of Education.

Grover Named As The New Director The West Islip School District has named James Grover as the new director of math, business and family and consumer science, replacing the retired Kathleen Sapanski.

A resident of West Islip, Grover previously served as a math teacher at West Islip High School, as a basketball coach and supervisor of the high school’s Paw Prints newspaper club. He earned his bachelor’s degree from

the University of Rhode Island, his master’s degree in liberal studies from Stony Brook University, and his advanced master’s degree in educational leadership from Stony Brook University.

West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School recently celebrated its 15th year working with the New York Marine Rescue Center, previously known as the Riverhead Foundation, to help raise funds to treat injured marine mammals.

As a school community, Manetuck helped to save and rehabilitate 14 seals during that time. This year, Manetuck was given the opportunity to help a cold, stunned loggerhead sea turtle. On Aug. 12, students, family, Manetuck

Principal Vanessa Williams and faculty members gathered at Tiana Beach in Hampton Bays to release the rehabilitated sea turtle back into the water.

Manetuck’s Community Service Club, run by Kerri Ierardi and Susan Marullo, brought awareness to students regarding local marine life. As a culminating activity, the two teachers set up a Seal of Fortune game board in the lobby and read questions daily during morning announcements based on

facts posted throughout the building. As each grade level answered correctly, letters were revealed, to the students’ delight.

Manetuck also held its annual Walk for Marine Mammals, in which students volunteered their time to obtain sponsors and walked the bus circle before school. Led by top three fundraisers Cooper Terraciano, Lily Tuffariello and Joseph Vitello, the students helped to raise over $2,500 for the cause.
