This is the time of year, in late summer, when all thoughts point north – to Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility.

My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own.

Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you

endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes.

If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city.

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres

throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts.

Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love.

Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds.

Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.

Fuoco Golf Feastival Chairman Steve Fuoco, President of the Camp PaQua-Tuck Patrons Group, along with two of his children, Katy Fuoco-Hill and Jimmy Fuoco, assist in running key operations of the tournament, along with an active committee of family, fellow Rotarians and friends. The Fuoco family’s longstanding connection with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck began with Steve’s sister, Beth Ann Fuoco-Santos’, attendance at the camp for many years. To this day, the Fuoco family continues to be involved with the camp, annually organizing the Memorial Golf Feastival, which has raised nearly $1.5 million in support of the camp.

Rizzi, Schwarz and Tarakas, LLP, who have been supporters of the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival for many years due to the friendship between event founder Buddy Fuoco and the firm’s founding partner, Vitro Rizzi. After Rizzi’s passing, his colleagues and surviving firm partners, Robert Schwarz, Janice Taraskas and Helen Butera, have continued his legacy of providing a steadfast commitment to community and volunteerism.

As with previous outings, several Italian-themed Feastival Stands are presented throughout the course featuring meatballs and clams, pasta and wine, an Italian kitchen, an oyster bar, an Italian Gourmet Deli, Zeppolas and Cannolis, sausage and peppers and gourmet pizza and craft beer. As is standard practice, there will once again be a contest for Longest Drive or Closest to the Pin on every

hole, as well as a Hit the Green challenge on every par 3, a putting contest on the 19th hole and a holein-one prize car, courtesy of Brown’s Automotive Group. The event will conclude with a cocktail hour and dinner buffet, followed by a program and awards ceremony.

Registration and breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. and tee-off time starts at 10 a.m. Though early reservations have already filled all of the available golfing spots, event organizers are taking names for a waitlist, dinner reservations and several sponsorship options are available on the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival Website, www.fuocogolf. com.

50th Anniversary The 2016-2017 school year marks the 50th year milestone in the history of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School.

The school was the first of four co-ed diocesan high schools dedicated on September 8th, 1966 by the then Bishop of Rockville Centre, Walter Kellenberg.

Prevent Mobile Phone-Related Auto Accidents

Because they enable people to make calls or send messages from just about anywhere, mobile phones can be great conveniences. But they also can be annoying when conversations, texting or perusing the Internet gets in the way of proper etiquette.

Talking loudly in public areas, texting when in the middle of a face-to-face conversation or sharing personal details in public are not just bad manners, but such behaviors also can be unsafe. Poor mobile phone etiquette is cause for some concern, but there is great cause for concern for people who find themselves

routinely distracted by their mobile phones while driving or operating equipment. Using a mobile phone when driving greatly increases a person’s risk of getting into an accident. Distracted driving has become something of an epidemic, as the following figures, courtesy of Don’t Text and Drive, illustrate: • Texting or doing something on your phone can distract drivers for as long as five seconds. If you’re traveling at 55 miles per hour, that is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field without looking at the road.

• Texting while driving makes

• Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 involved in car accidents in the United States, 13 percent admitted to texting or talking on their phones at the times of their crashes.

• The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to around 1 .6 million crashes each year, with nearly 330,000 injuries occurring from such accidents.

• Cell phone usage while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at

the legal limit.

Although the majority of drivers support a ban on texting while driving, many still continue to do it. The single best way to prevent driving accidents and fatalities related to mobile phone usage is to put the phone down. Consider the following suggestions to help you avoid looking at your phone while behind the wheel: • Keep your phone in a purse or in a bag in the back seat so that it is not readily accessible while driving. Many cars now have Bluetooth-enabled handsfree dialing and calling, so you do not need to have the phone

nearby to answer a call.

• Leave your phone at home on short trips and give yourself a break from screen time.

• Set up an automatically generated text message that indicates you are driving. Other apps will read out texts to you or block incoming calls or texts altogether.

• Turn off notifications so you will not be tempted to look at your phone each time there’s a new pop-up or sound.

Remember, any texts can wait until you pull over, park or arrive at your destination.
