The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has named West Islip High School as a 2022-2023 School of Excellence. To earn the School of Excellence Award, 75% of a school’s varsity teams must qualify and receive the scholarathlete team award. West Islip High School has 28

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the annual Dockside Family Festival will take place on Saturday, September 9th at Captree State Park in Babylon from 11:00AM to 5:00PM, rain or shine.

This festival offers fun for the entire family! Adults can enjoy live music as well as a variety of merchandise and food vendors. Activities for children include interactive pirate shows, pony rides, magic shows, boat rides (children must be accompanied by an adult) and much more! All activities are free; however, there is an $8.00 vehicle use fee in effect from 8:00AM to 4:00PM.

This event is sponsored by the Natural Heritage Trust and the Long Island State

For the third week of the Summer Investigations elementary-aged program at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School in the West Islip School District, students learned all about space and innovation. During their Makerspace lessons, students used straws to construct their own inventions. In the STEM lab, students built their own rockets and launched them to see how far they could fly. A Free Forum For Breast Cancer Survivors

“Surviving Breast Cancer: Empower yourself with nutrition and a healthy lifestyle” is a free forum to be held on Friday, September 22 from 12 noon to 1 pm on zoom.

Dr. Heather Zinkin, a radiation oncologist at Northwell Health in Huntington, will provide important information to empower patients to take hold of their health. Topics to be discussed include health screenings, prevention, vaccines, and more.

Dr. Heather Zinkin has a special interest in integrative medicine, patient wellness and

nutrition. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from NYU School of Medicine and performed her medical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed a residency in radiation oncology at a combined program at Tufts and Brown University and served as chief resident. She then returned to her hometown where she has been practicing for the past 15 years and was appointed Chief of Radiation Medicine at Huntington Hospital. She has given many survivorship lectures both

in hospital and community settings including active participation in the Northwell Wellness Center. She has also served on various physician panels for community education and holds certificates in Nutrition from Cornell University.

Ockers Senior Club Celebrates Dot’s 90th Birthday!

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined with members of Ockers Senior Club to celebrate Dorothy Oliveri’s 90th Birthday!

Dorothy “Dot” Oliveri was born on August 4, 1933 in Mastic, NY. Growing up, she spent her summers at her grandfather’s farm before graduating Center Moriches High School in 1951. Upon graduating, she married Earl Rowland and welcomed two daughters, Diane and Debra; and in 1974, she would marry again to Carl Oliveri, gaining two stepsons Nat and Al, creating a beautiful and loving blended family.

Dorothy began her career at the Brookhaven National

Lab as the Supervisor of Mail Distribution, before going on to the Connetquot School District, dedicating over 20 years in the Guidance Department at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School. An avid gardener, for over 41 years she has volunteered as a member and Master Gardener of the Bayard Cutting Arboretum Horticultural Society.

Dorothy is a proud mother and devoted grandmother, having continued to serve as an adored member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sayville and as a member of the Ockers Senior Club. She loves to travel and stays active through walking and exercise classes.

“Throughout her life, Dot has lived with grace and respect, and over the course of an extraordinary 90 years, has defined a legacy for all who know her to admire. On behalf of the Islip Town Board, we wish you a very Happy Birthday Dot,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

John C. Cochrane, Jr., retired US Navy Captain and Chairman of Islip Town Veterans’ Advisory Board, recently met with our Town’s newest centenarian, World War II Veteran, Warren James, to congratulate him on his milestone 100th birthday.

Born in 1923, Warren enlisted to serve in the United States Coast Guard in December of 1941, and would serve on the USS Mistletoe (WAGL237) coastal buoy tender stationed in the Hampton Roads area. After receiving transfer to the USS Eugene (PF-40) Tacoma class frigate, he entered the Pacific Theater aboard the

WWII Veteran Warren James Turns 100

ship that would later earn two World War II battle stars.

While transporting wounded from the battle of the Philippines, the USS Eugene caught fire, but was saved along with its occupants by the dedicated efforts of the crew in which Warren served. Transferred once more to the USS Lansing (DE-388), he would continue to serve with dedication through to the remainder of World War II.

“Warren James belongs to that special group in our Nation’s history,” said Islip Councilman John C. Cochrane Jr. “Part of the greatest generation, his efforts during the

War contributed to the protection of the Pacific that helped save lives and enable the U.S. and Allied Forces to emerge victorious. We wish him nothing but peace and happiness on this milestone birthday achievement,” the councilman added.

After the war, Mr. James returned to Long Island and worked for the Fair Harbor Ferry Company, serving as a dock hand and captain. His love for the ocean led him to move to Lonelyville on Fire Island, where he would further serve his community as both Water Commissioner and Fire Commissioner. Happy Birthday, Warren James!
