Seven superbly talented young musicians from Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School – Abigail Alfano, Nicholas Costa, Avery Falco, Brendan Farrell, Maggie Frazer, Madelynn Lang and Alexander Romeo – were selected for this year’s Suffolk County Music Educators Association All-County

Festival.

The student-musicians were selected for AllCounty based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School Music Association Solo Festival. These honored performers were recommended by Commack Road music teachers Michael Baur, Keelan Muscara and

Rachel Tria for AllCounty consideration, and then chosen from among hundreds of worthy applicants from schools across the county. Winning Big More than a dozen East Islip Middle School students in Frances Weller’s art classes participated in the Arts Alive LI 2016 Poster

Contest. Eighth-graders Alexis Barber and Alexa Fusco were both recently named winners in the grades 6-8 category, with Fusco earning first place

and Barber placing third.

Arts Alive LI, a program of the Long Island Arts Alliance, sponsors events throughout the year to highlight the importance

of the arts on Long Island.

Fusco and Barber, who will attend East Islip High School as freshmen in September, will be recognized at an awards

ceremony in September at the LIU Post campus in Brookville, and their creative artwork will be on display at the Long Island Children’s Museum

in Garden City during October in celebration of National Arts and Humanities Month.

setting where they would receive quality care and travel hours to see them, or place them in a nonage appropriate setting and have them close to

Angela’s House, founded in 1992, offers hope for families and children

living with severe medical conditions. Their home care programs works with over 600 children that live at home with their parents, by coordinating

It’s that time of year again, that period of transition between seasons that seems to sneak up on us so quickly, yet stretch so luxuriously over the month of September, giving us the best of both worlds; the last lingering rays of summer sunshine mixed with the brisk chill of autumn air, ushering in pumpkin harvests and apple picking and all the holiday seasons which follow.

What better time of year to appreciate all that nature has to offer, to savor the sunsets while looking ahead to the foliage, to dip your toes in the ocean one

last time while unpacking the fall wardrobe – and maybe shop for a few new accessories. It is a time for new beginnings, and for endings; for the start of the school year and the final days of summer leisure.

Sure, every seasonal transition has its own benefits; but there is something about September… something uniquely magical about the twilight of summer and the golden glow of autumn that exceeds them all. This is why it’s so important to slow down and appreciate each day, each stage of metamorphosis, as they each bring their own special respective nuances.

So, enjoy these next three weeks, summer’s swan song; and look ahead to the autumnal equinox with equal anticipation.

Each sunbeam, each fallen leaf… they each hold their own special significance.

It is up to us to recognize these special gifts, and to hold onto them as the annual winter chill approaches, along with the chaos of the holiday season.

This is the calm before the storms, the interlude of tranquility.

Come the 2016-2017 school year, the music and arts budget in the Los Angeles Unified School District will reach its highest point in a dozen years. While that’s great news for students, it also illustrates the sad fact that arts and music programs have taken a considerable hit in recent decades, when arts education fell victim to budget cuts.

Neither group had participated in formal music instruction before the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study.

The event is open to all individuals and foursomes.

Men and women golfers of all abilities, age

50+ are welcome to participate along with their sons or daughters or grandchildren. The annual event, now in its 23rd year, includes greens fee, cart, breakfast, lunch, dinner and open bar after golf, door prizes, skill prizes and trophies in several men’s and women’s age divisions.

There is also a division for firefighters.
