Serenity Gardens To Cater To All Abilities

SERENITY GARDENS TO CATER TO ALL ABILITIES - The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a much-anticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.

The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a muchanticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.

Located on the grounds of Brookwood Hall, Serenity Gardens will be a first-ofits-kind park in the Town, providing people of all abilities a way to enjoy nature, in an environment constructed for their individual needs.

“This, of course, would not have been possible without the dedicated members of the private nonprofit Parks Foundation of Islip Town, and our devoted community, whose donations ensure all $2 million of this garden park is entirely funded free of any burden to taxpayers,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. “The formation of this Islip Parks Foundation has really been a dream come true for me, and something I was proud

to spearhead and make a priority,” said the Supervisor.

Once complete, Serenity Gardens will feature lush foliage and greenery to promote tranquility; fragrant plants and flowers; a garden with a braille system; a walking labyrinth made of stones; sensory walking paths with mulch, tactile pads, rubber and gravel; wind chimes, as well as a sensory wall.

Wide walking paths will surround the entire park and divide it into four quadrants. With the groundbreaking, the Town will begin the process of prepping for these individual components, the first being a large gazebo that will anchor each of the quadrants at the center.

“We must also thank our dedicated Parks and DPW Department, who have been working hard to prepare this Park for installation and will now be hard at work to make our dream for Serenity Gardens a soon-to-be-had reality,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

The Entenmann Family is sponsoring the Veterans/ Seniors quadrant and the Bohlsen Group is sponsoring the Autism/Developmentally Disabled quadrant.

Quadrant sponsors for the Alzheimer’s Disease/ Dementia quadrant or the Sight/Hearing Impaired quadrant are available. The Foundation is also seeking community feedback and input for Serenity Gardens.

This may cause your gutters to fall off your home, leaving your house vulnerable to leaks and cracks. Finally, make sure that all your windows and doors can lock & are airtight. Water should not be able to infiltrate through these openings. Make sure the soil around your window wells is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. 2023 Sandcastle Contest To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday through August 31, 2023. Sand sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach. Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will be awarded for the best sculptors and castles in several categories.

Registration is held each Thursday 9:30AM at Hither Hills State Park Visitors Center. A $10.00 Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.

New Principal Appointed At Oquenock Elementary

West Islip School District has named Amanda Harvey as the new principal of Oquenock Elementary School, effective July 1. Ms. Harvey replaces Jack Maniscalco, who retired at the end of the school year.

Most recently, Ms. Harvey has served as assistant principal of Beach Street Middle School in the West Islip School District since 2021. She has spent more than 23 years as an educator in the West Islip

School District as both a first grade and fourth grade teacher at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School. Since 2008, she also has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts’ New York Center for Teacher Development.

“Having spent more of my career working with elementary students, I am excited to begin this next chapter at Oquenock in a district I have called home

for more than 20 years,” Ms. Harvey said. “I look forward with getting to know the staff, students and families of Oquenock.”

Ms. Harvey holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a master’s degree in reading K-12 from SUNY Cortland. In addition, she holds certification in school district administrator and school administration and supervisor from LIU/Post.

SUFFOLK COUNTY WOMEN VETERANS OF DISTINCTION - Ms. Olive E. Lazio was recognized as the 2023 Suffolk County Women Veterans of Distinction for the 11th Legislative District, by Legislator Steven J. Flotteron at a recent Legislative General Meeting in Hauppauge. Ms. Lazio, a West Islip resident for nearly 70 years, served in the United States Navy WAVES and was amongst the earliest women to serve in our Armed Forces in WWII. She joined the groundbreaking Navy WAVES as a 19-year-old, serving from 1941 until her honorable discharge in July, 1945. She held the rank of Hospital Apprentice First Class. Previously, she held the ranks of AS and Hospital Apprentice 2nd Class. Ms. Lazio cared for returning wounded and ill Navy personnel during the war at the US Naval Hospital, National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda Maryland. She graduated from the Hospital Corp. School in 1945. To this day, she continues her public and community service as an officer of the Great South Bay Guild of the Good Samaritan University Hospital.

Laura Amato was born on June 14, 1932 in Manhattan. She met her husband Mathew through a family friend, and they were married for 39 years. They have two children, Vinnie and Frankie. Frankie and his wife Joanne have two children,

and they live next door to Laura. She loves cooking for them.

Laura has lived in West Islip for 65 years, where she was a homemaker, and cared for her grandchildren. Laura has been a member of the Deer Lake Club for over 25 years.

She looks forward to seeing her friends every week, playing Bingo and going to parties. "From all of us here at the Town of Islip, Happy Birthday Laura!" said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

Over a dozen students age 11 to 14 are learning vital water safety and life-saving lessons through the Town’s Junior Lifeguard Program. The program helps provide students with the necessary training to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course offered to ages 15+, and will further them on the path to become one of our Town’s many dedicated Bay and Pool Lifeguards.

PSEG Long Island reminds customers to keep safety at the forefront as they use electricity to make the most of the season.

“Most of us love to be outside when the weather is warm and the days are long, and many of us utilize electricity to transform our outdoor spaces for the season,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution. “Whether you are using electric lawn equipment, hooking up a sound system for a garden party, or even inflating a bounce house or kids’ swimming pool, it’s important to follow best practices to ensure everyone stays safe.”

PSEG Long Island recommends customers:

· Check that extension cords are correctly rated for the amount of electricity they are to carry and are Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved.

· Check all electric cords for visible damage. Cracked or frayed cords can be dangerous.

Never use power equipment on wet hedges, grass, shrubs, or in any areas that are damp.

Make sure their work and garden power tools are protected with three-pronged grounding plugs, unless they are double insulated.

Contact their town or village hall to confirm that their pool plans meet all local zoning and safety

requirements.

Check that no electric devices are so close to the swimming pool that they could accidentally fall into the water.

Ensure that all outdoor outlets have waterproof covers. Outlets that have moisture in them may create a shock hazard.

Keep all ladders far away from electric lines.
