BAYVIEW’S MATH SKILLS BENEFIT CHARITY - Students at Bayview Elementary School in the West Islip School District sharpened their math skills this June while also raising money for a good cause. Bayview students participated in St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon, a program for students in grades K-8 that teaches the importance of math skills while benefiting St. Jude’s Research Hospital. To participate, students collected pledges from family and friends as they solve different problems in the gradeappropriate worksheets. Bayview students raised more than $4,200 in total. Race To Save The Sea Turtles!

2023 Paddle Battle LI Event

Saturday, July 29th

The New York Marine Rescue Center is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event on Saturday, July 29th along the Peconic River in Riverhead, NY.

It’s a race to save the Sea Turtles! This family friendly event includes a 2.5-mile amateur race and a 5-mile competitive race course. First place medals will be offered to winners in each category, for each class and distance. We also have our Casual Paddle! This is not a race it’s just a great way for family and friends to get together and paddle casually on the beautiful Peconic River!

There is also a great opportunity for companies, organizations and unions to participate in the “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.” This 2.5 mile stand up paddle board and kayak race designed for teams of four competitors to

compete against one another for the Team Challenge trophy. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the bragging rights of winning the 2023 “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.”

All proceeds will go directly to the NY Marine Rescue

Center, a not-for-profit 501c3 to help them save the Sea Turtles!

Registration starts at 7:30am on the Peconic Waterfront – Entry fees are $95/pp before the race day, or $105 on the event day.

Manteuck’s Efforts Help Return Baby Seal Back To Ocean

Thanks to the efforts of students and staff at Manetuck Elementary School in the West Islip School District, a rehabilitated seal made his way back to the ocean during a release event held at Robert Moses State Park on June 21.

Manetuck Elementary School students raised $10,000 for the New York Marine Rescue Center to help rehabilitate the baby seal, who was found in Southampton in early March. In turn, the students had the opportunity to name the

seal. The students chose the name Roman, a tribute to the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Romanelli.

The community service club has raised more than $75,000 during the past 18 years to help rehabilitate sea animals.

West Islip’s Class Of 2023 Shines Bright At Graduation

Even though the sun wasn’t shining, the smiles were bright as West Islip School District celebrated the commencement exercises of the Class of 2023 at a ceremony on the evening of June 23.

A sea of blue and white, the soon-to-be graduates marched onto the field to “Pomp and Circumstance” before taking their seats with their classmates.

West Islip High School Principal Dr. Anthony Bridgeman welcomed guests to the ceremony and addressed the members of the Class of 2023 about rejuvenation and the traits of grit, determination, and empathy. “Graduates, as you embark on this next chapter of your lives, I want to leave you with one

final thought,” he said.

“Remember that success is not defined by the amount of money you make or the title you hold, but rather by the impact you have on the world and the lives of those around you. Use your education and your experiences to make a difference, to create positive change, and to leave this world a better place than you found it.”

The Class of 2023’s three academic leaders – Emily Bahm, Sophia Bahm and Eugene Ditaranto –each providing their own perspective on the last four years of high school and moving to the next chapter.

“As each of you embark on your next journey, I implore you to reflect about those who have

been pivotal in shaping your character,” said Emily Bahm. “After all, we learn the most from those we surround ourselves with.”

Her sister Sophia added, “We have all had the privilege of being raised in this West Islip community, where all of the residents would bleed blue and gold if you cut them. We have all had the opportunity to form lifelong friendships and meet educators that have left indelible impressions upon us. But most importantly, our foundations as individuals have been set here. Hard work, trust, and honesty are amongst the qualities we have learned to embody as students of the West Islip community.”

Focusing on what

lies ahead, Ditaranto urged his classmates to look to the future with confidence. “It’s going to be hard,” he said. “It already has been hard and it's only going to get harder. But that is no cause to worry, because each one of us are more than capable and we will succeed in our future endeavors, regardless of the difficulties. Today marks that very start. Everything that we’ve done, not only over our last four years in high school, but over the last 18 years of our lives, has led to this very moment and has provided us with the necessary tools and skills to continue on past this point.”

students to meet the challenges they may face head on. “Keep striving to be your best no matter what challenge is put in front of you,” he said. “While I cannot promise the future will be perfect, if you apply what you have learned here at West Islip High School to your next step in life, you will be able to shape the best version of your future.”

West Islip School District Board of Education President Anthony Tussie offered words of advice as students turn the page and begin a new chapter. “I believe that one of the most important things in life is building relationships with people,” he said. “My advice would be to always be genuinely interested in other people. Building

relationships is a powerful thing. It can enhance our personal and professional lives, it will lead to greater fulfillment, and bring joy to our lives. Let us all continue to prioritize relationships and show love and kindness to those around us.”

Students were then called to the stage one by one to celebrate their commencement, receive their diplomas and congratulations from administrators and board of education members. When the final name was called, students were instructed to turn their tassels and toss their caps high in the air as official graduates of West Islip High School.

PSEG Long Island’s Energy Conservation PSA Contest Winners

PSEG Long Island announced the 11 student winners of its annual I Am EM-Powered Energy Conservation Video Public Service Announcement Contest. Two hundred seventy three videos were submitted by creative, local schoolchildren, and 11 made the final cut. Dozens of students and teachers who participated in the program watched the announcement live via webinar hosted by the company this morning.

Over the past two and a half months, nearly 4,000 students in grades 4-8 across Long Island and the Rockaways engaged in PSEG Long Island’s I Am EMPowered program. They learned concepts of conserving energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the benefits of renewable energy and tackling pollution – concepts they put into action in their video public service announcements.

Efficiency and Renewable Energy, who co-hosted the event. “Congratulations to the thousands of students who participated, and thank you to the teachers who brought the contest and coursework into their classrooms.”

“It was an honor to announce the winners and share the first look at the winning videos,” said Michael Presti, PSEG Long Island’s director of Customer Experience and Marketing, who also co-hosted the event. “It was great to see how the students took concepts about saving the planet they were given and put them into creative, informational videos. They did such great work!”

Sponsored by PSEG Long Island, the I AM EM-Powered program was provided free to students in the company’s service area – Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaways.

Created by educational consultants, D. Barrett Associates, the STEM-related coursework provided lessons on energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy in alignment with current educational standards on these topics. Teachers could select

and submit their favorite three videos to be judged by a strict grading rubric.
