As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.

The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.

“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

further their mission, there are two upcoming events, one online and one in person, which o er a great way to do so.

Giving Bark Thursday: Held on July 13, this is a 24-hour online event geared towards raising awareness and funds for America’s VetDogs. Throughout the day, anyone who makes a donation on their website (up to $30,000) will have their donation matched. Additionally, if you would like to create your own fundraiser, in hopes to raise funds on this special day, you can do so by clicking “Become a Giving Bark Fundraiser” at VetDogs.org/GivingBark.

America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk: You can also help America’s VetDogs make a di erence in the lives of veterans and first responders by participating in the 9th America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk, held on July 29 at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. This 5K is an In-Person and Virtual Event and dogs are welcome to join you on your run/walk too! 2023 Sandcastle Contest

To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday beginning June 29 through August 31, 2023. Sand sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials

native to the beach.

Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will be awarded for the best sculptors and castles in several categories.

Registration is held each Thursday 9:30AM at Hither Hills State Park Visitors Center. A $10.00

Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in

support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers

for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the five-year life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need for skilled workers,

according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,”

Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

Byron Lake Park Renovation Project

The Town of Islip is excited to finally be moving forward with this long overdue Park improvement. Legislator Flotteron Honors Town Of Islip Employee On 43 Years Of Service

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Robert Moses Kuri, for his 43 years with the Town of Islip Community Development Agency (CDA), which had been established several years prior to his joining. The CDA has introduced many community-oriented programs designed to provide a better quality of life for those who live, work, invest and play in the Township of Islip. Over the years, Mr. Kuri was committed to actively participate in producing and promoting; implement and nurture community revitalization efforts, as well as work on the development of affordable and sustainable housing, technological advances and innovation in home construction, including public service and capital improvement projects. As the Affordable Housing Director, he has successfully acquired, sold and financed more than 1,000 properties and arranged more than 20 housing lotteries for the development of affordable

housing for first-time homebuyers. He also had the distinction of serving in various capacities toward the creation of affordable housing communities and made way for a commercial development project to stimulate the economic

growth and home buying opportunities in Bay Shore, Brentwood and Central Islip, earning him professional certificates of accomplishments, public service recognition awards, SC proclamations and TOI citations.

Medicaid Auto Enrollment Ended Mutli-Agency Effort Underway to Re-certify Vulnerable Long Islanders

Automatic enrollment for Medicaid recipients has ended. Auto enroll was put in place during the pandemic to ensure continuous health coverage, but now Medicaid, Child Health Plus, and Essential Plan members must recertify or they will lose coverage. Members of special populations like Aged, Blind, Disabled must also re-certify to keep coverage. Keep LI Covered, a grassroots effort led by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC), in partnership with Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling and the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, wants all eligible

Long Islanders to be aware of their coverage deadlines and what agencies provide FREE re-certification assistance. Call 631-435-3000 to be connected to the appropriate agency.

New York State began mailing re-certification notices to enrollees and will continue to do so until June 30, 2024, as each enrollee’s re-certification deadline nears. Enrollees should call the Keep LI Covered phone number – 631-435-3000 – to re-certify so they don’t lose coverage.

“We have about 900,000 eligible enrollees on Long Island. It’s a huge undertaking, but we don’t

want anyone who is still eligible for coverage to lose their health insurance simply because they failed to re-certify. The recertification rules were relaxed during COVID, but we are now back to the annual re-certification process,” said Stacy Villagran, Chief Operating Officer, Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council. She is overseeing the island-wide re-certification effort that is funded by a grant from the Community Service Society of New York, and its multiple funders who care deeply about this issue. #keepLIcovered.

New Van To Service Town’s Nutrition Program

The Town of Islip enjoys a robust Nutrition Program for its elderly population. The Suffolk County Office for the Aging recognizes the demand and popularity of this program and as a result, designated

funds in its 2020 Suffolk County Operating Budget for the Town of Islip to purchase a van to assist in the delivery of nutrition services to the Town’s elderly residents.

“Good nutrition is essential

to good health, both mentally and physically. This van will enable the Town to deliver these and other services to our homebound elderly,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.
