West Islip High School business teacher Patricia Morgigno was named Long Island Business Teacher of the Year by the Long Island Business Teachers’ Association on May 23. The nomination was largely written by members of the West Islip High School business department and by Ms. Morgigno’s students. Ms.

Morgigno is a 25-year veteran teacher at the West Islip School District, who besides teaching, has involved herself in many philanthropic, community-minded events such as “Lemons To Lemonade” during the pandemic. This event raised thousands of dollars to help feed and support healthcare workers and

keep businesses in the West Islip community open.

“We are indeed very lucky to have Ms. Morgigno as a member of the business education department,” said Mrs. Macrelli, fellow colleague.

“She is the essence of what an excellent role model and teacher should be.”

Minuteman Scholarship Recipients Honored For Academic Excellence

Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board honored five students from the Town of Islip who received the U.S. Army’s Minuteman Scholarship. The

Minuteman Scholarship Program is a Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship introduced in 2015 to enhance the Army Reserve’s ability to recruit highly qualified cadets

every year.

The five high school seniors who received the scholarships for their academic success and service to the ROTC include Valery Rodriguez, Jocelyn Velasquez, Diana

Saltos from Brentwood and twins Christopher and Courtney Skahill from West Islip.

“Valery, Jocelyn, Diana, Christopher and Courtney proved themselves to be fantastic

candidates for the Minuteman Scholarship. Their participation in the ROTC program at their high schools exemplifies their dedication for our nation and scholarly excellence… we look forward to the bright future ahead of each of you,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

“This is the highest amount ever given in a single year to one

Township,” said Steve Castleton, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, whose team selects the scholarship recipients. The scholarship provides full tuition and fees or room and board ($10,000 per year), for up to four years at a public or private college. Scholarship recipients also receive a monthly stipend and a yearly book allowance.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

Consider These Diploma Display Ideas

Graduation day is one of the proudest moments in students’ academic careers. Diplomas are symbolic of hours spent honing skills and working on assignments and, ultimately, success in the classroom. High school diplomas represent an opportunity to go on to higher learning or a trade, while college degrees indicate young people are ready to begin their professional lives.

Many graduates are excited about the prospect of receiving their diplomas. Once in hand, the document can be put on display. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work.

Framing

One of the classic ways to display a diploma is in a frame. Many businesses offer customized framing where the frame material and the matting can be chosen. Some grads

may want to include a photograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma. Graduates also may want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colors.

Create a shadow box

Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house items that are thicker than photographs or papers. Items such as a graduation tassel, medal or other award, a varsity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremony can be placed in the shadow box.

Create a photo wall

Display the diploma among other framed photos from school activities. This can elicit a trip down memory lane every time the wall is viewed. Some families may want to display their diplomas together, especially if

multiple family members attended the same school.

Make a work of art

Various online art vendors can turn the diploma into different works of art. For example, engravers can laser engrave the diploma onto a wooden plaque. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another.

Place it under glass

Display the diploma beneath the glass top of a coffee table. When entertaining guests, the diploma can make for a unique conversation piece.

College Savings Strategies

Enrolling in college is the next step for many high school graduates. However, finding ways to pay for higher education has long been a goal for students and their families. PrepScholar, a college testing preparation resource, calculates that, by 2033, students can expect to pay around $237,000 at in-state public universities and $464,000 at private colleges or universities for four-year degrees. Taking steps to plan and save helps to make schooling more affordable.

529 College Savings Plan

A 529 is a specialized savings account for college and university costs. Most plans can be opened by a U.S. citizen or resident alien age 18 and older. The individual opening the account can be a parent, grandparent, cousin, or even a friend. The student is the beneficiary of the account. Four-

year schools, community colleges and vocational/trade schools accept 529 accounts as payment sources. The only requirement is that the school must participate in the U.S. Department of Education student financial aid programs.

Education Savings Account, Or Education IRA

The financial experts at Ramsey Solutions say an ESA works like a Roth IRA but it is designed specifically for education expenses. Individuals can invest up to $2,000 (after tax) per year, per child. The account grows tax-free. The rate of growth varies based on investments in the account. Ramsey estimates that at an average return rate of 12 percent on a $36,000 investment ($2,000 per year for 18 years) would grow to around $126,000 by the time the child starts college. An ESA also can

be used to pay for K-12 private school tuition, school supplies, tutoring, or textbooks. It also can be transferred to a sibling if the money is not needed for a particular student.

UTMA/UGMA Plan

This plan is different from ESAs and 529s because it is not specifically designed for college savings. The Uniform Transfer/Gift to Minors Act is in the child’s name but is controlled by a guardian until the child reaches age 18 or 21. This mutual fund account can be used to save for college with reduced taxes, or funds can be used for other expenses, such as a car or housing.

Saving for college can start early, but it’s never too late. Congrats grads, we wish you the best of luck in the future!

Inductees were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement in business education and excellence in the areas of personal character, leadership and community service. The West Islip High

School chapter of the NYSBMHS works toward fostering and recognizing leadership skills and character development, assisting members in growing morally and socially by promoting and encouraging an interest in business and encouraging member involvement in community service.

Keynote speaker and 2012 West Islip High School graduate Jaclyn Voor addressed and motivated the inductees by promoting mindfulness and sharing

her insight on the business industry. As a private-equity operations professional, Mrs. Voor’s work experiences and core competencies span across performance improvement consulting, portfolio operations and strategy. She currently serves on the board of directors of the ASCM NYC/Long Island Chapter for supply chain and operations professionals and as a board committee member of the Greenwich Young Professionals Group.
