New York State Parks Invites All

To

New York State Parks is celebrating their 100th year, and the Long Island Region is marking the milestone with a festival at Heckscher State Park on Saturday, June 22 from 11am – 3pm. The Centennial Celebration event is titled “Through the Decades: 100 Years of State Parks on Long Island.”

The Centennial Celebration will feature tented booths for each decade from the 1920’s to the 2020’s to recall the joy that State parks on Long Island have provided since 1924. Each booth will include historical photos, a kidfriendly craft, an outdoor game, and information about the parks that were opened to the public in that decade. Reminisce about driving to the parks

years ago with classic cars on display.

The New York State Park Police and New York State Park Lifeguards will also have booths showing off their vintage memorabilia. The Montaukett Indian Nation will display items from their “Gone Whaling” exhibit and the Montaukett Women Circle Dancers will perform traditional dance. Partnership tables will also be provided by the Department of Environmental Conservation, The Friends of Connetquot, The Friends of Heckscher, and the Islip Arts Council. The festival includes a variety of family fun entertainment. Voted “Best Family Show” by Entertainer America, Jester Jim will delight

children and families with his unique juggling show. Kids and adults can enjoy free face painting, as well as an inflatable obstacle course and inflatable slide. A few holes of miniature golf will feature iconic landmarks from some of our local parks. Festival goers can even take photos with life-size cutouts of vintage uniformed park workers.

The Jazz Loft’s Equity Brass Band will play live jazz while Swing Dance Long Island provides free dance lessons. Several food trucks will have delicious food and treats for sale including Double D’s Rollin’ Grill, Quina’s Cookin’, All American Wontons, Filthy Pig BBQ, Nomastayvegan, Brother’s Lemonade, and Sunrise Delight.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Many families commemorate graduation with a celebration. Planning a graduation party requires some work, but the efforts can be well worth it in the end. Here are six planning tips!

1. Set a budget

Graduation season can stretch families’ budgets. Graduation caps and gowns, travel, gifts, and special occasion attire will need to be to purchased. It is important to budget accordingly if you plan to throw a party. Budget will dictate whether yours is a large affair or something more intimate. Realistically assess what you can afford before you make any promises.

2. Pick easy food options

Food is not the focal point of a graduation party like it is during a wedding reception. Therefore, hosts have more leeway with the menu when planning a graduation party. Choose ﬁnger foods and others that

can be grabbed and eaten on the go, as people will want to mingle and have time to congratulate the graduate.

3. Choose the right location

Budget may dictate the type of venue. Having a graduation party at home can work, provided you have the space for it! If your graduate has requested a theme, then the party location can align with that theme. For example, a luau theme may work best around a pool or at the beach. If you will be hiring entertainment, make sure there is enough space and electrical hookups for equipment as well. Give neighbors a heads-up if you’ll be hosting at home.

4. Consider an open-house event

Various graduation parties may be going on at the same time, particularly on weekends. Consider an open time frame for guests to drop by and then leave when they desire. This makes it easy for the graduate’s friends to stop by when they can, rather than having

a ﬁxed schedule for the party.

5. Personalize decorations

Set the party apart with some personalized decorations that ﬁt the theme. This can include using school colors, photography, the graduate’s name, or speciﬁc quotes or interests of the graduate on banners and more. Personalized decorations also mean that the grad can save something to serve as a memento of this exciting time in his or her life.

6. Don’t lose focus

Graduating is a big accomplishment in itself! Don’t lose focus of what the party is all about...celebrating the graduate and all their success. Keeping that in mind every step of the way can help ease nerves and keep things in perspective.

Michael A. Castellino of West Islip was among 22 members of The University of Scranton's class of 2024 who graduated from the University Honors Program, which is one of the Jesuit university's programs of excellence. Students in the Honors Program pursue a rigorous education that stresses independent work through close engagement with professors and other honors students, including the preparation, presentation and defense of a research or creative project during their senior year. Castellino graduated, magna cum laude, as a business analytics major. According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents

indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many

working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.
