Catherine Amodeo was born on the feast of Saint Anthony, June 13th, 1918, into the Costa family in Brooklyn.

Her parents already had three children, two girls and a boy, but their son died in the flu pandemic of 1918, making Catherine’s arrival more precarious and still more precious. In her family, Catherine has always just been called “Rena.”

The Costa family continued to grow, and Catherine ultimately had three more

brothers and a total of three sisters. She took on a role as a dispassionate advisor to her siblings, a calm and stabilizing presence in the turbulent times of the Depression and World War, and following a devastating industrial injury her father sustained.

She married Joe Amodeo in 1941, had her first child, Lucille, soon afterwards, and when her husband went off to the war, she spent the first several years as a

phase lasted a few years, until Joe retired and they moved to Babylon, where they spent their last years together. Joe died suddenly in 1978, and Catherine lived on her own for over 30 years. She was active and made many friends at Saint Joseph parish.

Catherine now has seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and is a resident at Our Lady of Consolation, where she will celebrate her 100th birthday.

In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of

decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

Babylon Burger & Shrimp Co.

This 54-week pilot training program begins with a six-week preflight phase of academics and physical training to prepare students for flight.

The second phase, primary training, is conducted in the single-engine, turboprop T-6A Texan II. Primary training takes approximately 23 weeks and includes 254 hours of ground instruction, 27 hours in the flight simulator and 89 hours in

the T-6A aircraft.

After primary training, students select, by order of merit, advanced training in the fighter-bomber or airlift-tanker track.

Training for the fighter track is done in the T-38C Talon, a tandem-seat, twinengine supersonic jet. The airlift-tanker track uses the T-1A Jayhawk, the military version of a multi-place Beech Jet 400 business jet. Both tracks are approximately 26 weeks

and are designed to best train pilots for successful transition to their followon aircraft and missions.

Unruh is the son of Matthew and Kevin Unruh of Massapequa Park, and Roseanne Unruh of West Islip.

He is a 2012 graduate of Massapequa High School, Massapequa Park, N.Y. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2015 from Suny Farmingdale, Farmingdale.

Asst Super Named

Elisa Pellati has been appointed as the West Islip School District’s new assistant superintendent for business, effective July 1st.

She previously worked,

since 2014, as assistant superintendent for business in the Seaford School District, and as assistant business official for the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School

District from 2008-2014.

She began her career working as a tax staff accountant and audit manager for Ernst & Young, LLP in Melville.

Pellati, a West Islip resident, earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration in accounting as well as her master’s degree in business administration in finance from Hofstra University, and her advanced certificate in school district business leadership from Dowling College. She is also a certified public accountant in New York State.

“I look forward to working with the Board of Education, administration, staff and the community to support the district’s educational vision,” said Pellati.
