Catholic Health, Good Samaritan Hospital continued its Medication Education Series recently at the West Islip Senior Center. The series, in partnership with the Town of Islip, includes education and information related to medication, interactions and safety precautions. Health education, screenings and refreshments are served. “I would encourage anyone taking medication avail themselves of these valuable information sessions,” said Islip Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

Diet And Mental Wellness

Nutritious diets have long been touted as essential components of healthy lifestyles. Many people have a tendency to view diet as something that’s purely physical, associating the foods they eat with how they look and how much energy they have. While accurate, it doesn’t paint the full picture of just how big and positive an impact healthy diets can have on overall health.

In regard to healthy diets, it’s hard to dispute the effectiveness of the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet focuses on plant-based foods and, as a result, includes lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and olive oil. The diet is so healthy that the World Health Organization even recognizes it as a healthy, sustainable dietary pattern.

USPS Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

This year's West Islip Post Office Stamp Out Hunger food drive was a great success thanks to the generosity of the West Islip Community. On Saturday, May 12, 2024, our 30 Mail Carriers set out to deliver and collect mail on their assigned routes as they do each day, but today they

had an additional task... to pick up food donations along their routes from all of the kindhearted members of the West Islip community. This yearly initiative has been taking place for the past 32 years, and this year was a record-setter. Thanks to everyone in the West Islip

community, our Carriers and Clerks, and volunteers from the local schools we were able to fill a dozen pallets of food and toiletries to be delivered to the local food pantry. Thank you to everyone who made the 2024 "Stamp Out Hunger" possible, we couldn't have done it without you.

Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Islip Spring Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Islip residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

Advocates assist with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP – formerly known as food stamps), Medicare Savings Program and Heating Emergency Assistance Program (HEAP) applications. They also can provide information on Medicare, answer questions and make recommendations and referrals. Senior Volunteers Recognized At Annual Breakfast

Patrons of the Town of Islip’s five senior centers were recognized at the annual Senior Volunteer Breakfast at Brookwood Hall recently. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter presented each of the volunteers with a certificate on behalf of the Town Board.

“Our volunteers certainly are the backbone of our Senior Centers. It’s the

smiling faces, energy and kindness of our volunteers that are the reason our members keep coming back, and that our Senior Centers are enjoyed by so many,” said Islip Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

Islip Union Free School District joined forces with Hauppauge School District for a cornhole tournament to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Teachers, staff and administrators from the two districts went head-to-head for the competition at Pro Game Athletics in Bay Shore on April 3. Twenty-five teams from each district competed, with the winning team receiving the honor of presenting the check to the Wounded Warrior Project. The tournament raised a total of $6,350 to benefit the organization. Team EVA Continues Running To Help Veterans

Eileen Shanahan, Founder of Warrior Ranch Foundation and Legislator Steven J. Fotteron recognized Eva Casale who for her third time stopped at the Ranch in Calverton during her Team EVA (Every Veteran Appreciated) 7 Marathons 7 Days in Suffolk County.

Ms. Casale, a Glen Cove resident donated a kidney to a complete stranger in 2006 and has since continued to live her life around helping others. Whether it was personal sacrifice, supporting causes anyway she could, she has been responsible

for raising more than $375K. Her abilities in running great distances, has given her an avenue to play an even bigger role in charitable causes. Not for self-congratulation or recognition, but to raise awareness and much needed funds, and maybe even set an example that you can live your life for yourself and others, at the same time. Her charitable contributions have included: Former Head Coach with Team in Training for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society since 2009; Former Board of

Trustee Member for The Long Island Chapter of LLS raising more than $350K; Running more than 60 marathons and 60 Ultramarathons since 2006. Also, a 184 mile running tour to honor our Troops, our Veterans and our Fallen Heroes. Team EVA (Every Veteran Appreciated) has included 7 Marathons 7 Days in Suffolk County to Support Hope for the Warriors, April 2–8, 2016, which raised $40k; April 22–28th 2017, raising $26K; April 21–27th 2018, raising $30K; April 28–May 3rd, 2019 raising $30K.

Earth Day Poster Contest Winners Celebrated At Town Hall

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter celebrated the achievements of six young students from across the Township who participated and won the 4th Annual Earth Day Poster Contest, cosponsored by Reworld Waste, formerly Covanta. This year, nearly 180 students participated in the contest, utilizing their creativity to spotlight knowledge of

recycling and share its importance throughout our community. Prizes included Barnes and Noble gift cards, Nook tablets and more, all provided by Reworld Waste. The winning posters are currently on display at Town Hall West in the DEC’s 3rd floor display case.

“As we celebrate the fourth year of our Earth Day Poster Contest, I

am continually inspired by the creativity and environmental awareness demonstrated by our young participants,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “These students not only showcase their artistic talents but also their deep understanding of the importance of recycling and sustainability. By providing them with this creative outlet, we

nurture their passion for protecting our planet and empower them to become the eco-conscious leaders of tomorrow,” added the Supervisor.

The poster contest helps drive the Town’s commitment to fostering sustainability. In addition to facilitating the Earth Day Poster Contest initiative, Recycling Educator Danielle Wynn presents recycling demonstrations

RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING SEASON - The West Islip Boys Swimming and Diving Team led by Coaches MacLoudon and Jablonski finished an undefeated season with an impressive performance and victory at the 2022 Section XI League 2 Champions and Small School Suffolk County Champions!
