WEST ISLIP POST OFFICE “STAMP OUT HUNGER” 2023 - On May 13, 2023, the West Islip Post Office Letter Carriers set out on their routes with two missions – 1 to collect and deliver all the mail for their customers and 2 to collect as much food for the annual NALC National Food Drive as they have done every second Saturday in May for the past 31 years. With the help and cooperation of the Great West Islip Community our thirty (30) carriers set out in their 30 trucks and collected over 20,000 pounds of food to be distributed at local food banks. Our West Islip Carriers and Clerks worked tirelessly to make this year’s food drive one of our best and they couldn’t have done it without every single person in the West Islip Community. Thank you to all of you for help from the West Islip Post Office “Stamp Out Hunger” 2023.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day

Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 nowfreed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen

soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgia-based Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-inchief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the

holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History. com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF also awards selected Music Educators with their ‘Educator of Note’ award annually, allowing those who go above and beyond for their students to be honored with a grant that can be used within the school or district that they work(ed) in.

To nominate an individual for the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame’s ‘Educator of Note’ award, please contact Tom Needham at education@limusichallo ame.org. This year’s nominations must be submitted by September 30th.

Happy 95th Birthday Anne!

Anne McCartney, a beloved member of the West Islip Senior Center’s Deer Lake Club, celebrated her 95th birthday recently! Anne is a dedicated mother and homemaker who worked at the Beach Street School for eight years, before going on to work as a literature coordinator for Dzus

Fasteners, where she dedicated over 28 years of service.

Anne met her beloved husband Bill when she was 16. They later married and established roots in West Islip, where they would raise their son and daughter.

“Anne is a proud mother and devoted grandmother, an

adored member of the Deer Lake Club for many years, and has throughout all her years, lived with grace and respect, and over the course of an extraordinary 95 years has defined a legacy for all who know her to admire,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the Art League of Long Island is proud to bring back the Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4. Now in its 53rd year, this juried fair attracts thousands of discerning art lovers looking to purchase unique, one-of-akind art and craft to display in their homes or to wear as fashion statements.

More than 80 artists and craftspeople will show and sell

original works of art and handmade crafts such as paintings, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, photography, fiber art, wearable art and more. Prizes will be awarded to exhibitors who demonstrate superior artistry and craftsmanship.

The event will also feature live art demonstrations by Art League instructors, familyfriendly hands-on activities, and live music. A raffle will run throughout the weekend, the winner to be announced

Then on to SUNY Farmingdale, where he plans to study horticulture. He is also an Eagle Scout and a business owner. He was in a specialized program, diagnosed with dyslexia in the 10th grade so this is near and dear to his heart. During his time on the PTSA, Bedell said he has focused on student safety, vaping, posting of grades, substitute teacher matters and parking issues.

One of his future plans to work on is getting armed security guards on school grounds. We need that energy and enthusiasm now more then ever, and he has it!
