TEAM-UP TO CLEAN-UP - The annual cleanup of Spur Drive South from Brentwood Road to 5th Avenue recently kicked-off with dozens of volunteers turning out to get involved. This year, South Shore University Hospital and the Town of Islip came together to partner with the Islip Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee and KIC (Keep Islip Clean).

The annual cleanup of Spur Drive South from Brentwood Road to 5th Avenue recently kicked-off with dozens of volunteers turning out to get involved. This year, South Shore University Hospital and the Town of Islip came together to partner with the Islip Chamber of

Commerce Beautification Committee and KIC (Keep Islip Clean).

For the past 12 years, this collaborative effort has aimed to beautify and restore the cleanliness of our beloved community.

“We are fortunate here in the Town of Islip that residents take tremendous

pride in the communities they call home, and devote their free time to beautification efforts,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

Edward Fraser, Vice President of the Islip Chamber of Commerce, expressed the urgency of the cleanup, stating, “There

is just so much garbage along this road as I travel it each day, unfortunately, this is indicative of many roadways across our Town, County, and State.

The Town of Islip under the leadership of Angie Carpenter and the Suffolk County Police, along with KIC, have always been

great partners in this cleanup, however, it takes the whole community working together to effect meaningful change.

Fraser emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “We hope that this cleanup helps raise awareness, and brings everyone together to better our community.”

This cleanup initiative aims to not only remove litter, but also to identify structural issues such as fallen fences and trees. It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and take pride in their surroundings,” said Fraser.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Islip residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2024

Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals

to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will

take advantage of this opportunity.”

What Is The Summer Solstice?

Many people anxiously await the first day of summer and look forward to tailor-made activities for warm weather. The first day of summer is known as the summer solstice, which marks the official start of astronomical summer. The solstice features more hours of daylight than any day of the year, according to Space.com.

The next summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs on June 20, 2024 (the Southern Hemisphere celebrates the solstice on December 21, 2024).

The National Weather Services says the summer solstice happens when the earth’s tilt toward the sun is at a maximum. The sun will appear at its highest elevation with a noontime position that will not move much for several days before and after the summer solstice. The word solstice is derived from the Latin word “sol,” meaning sun.

During the summer solstice, the sun travels the longest path through the sky, which is why it is the day with the most daylight. The length of daylight depends on the

latitude. At the equator, the time from sunrise to sunset is about 12 hours.

Although many people celebrate the summer solstice primarily for the extra daylight hours, the solstice has historically been assigned deeper meaning in many cultures.

In Scandinavian countries, the solstice is celebrated as a holiday known as Midsummer’s Eve, which is observed on a weekend near the time of the summer solstice. Festivities include dancing, singing, drinking, cleaning the

house, lighting bonfires, and more.

During the summer solstice at Stonehenge in the United Kingdom, the sun will rise behind the entrance to a stone circle, and the sunlight will flow into the center of the monument. Researchers believe solstices have been celebrated at Stonehenge for thousands of years.

The summer solstice is soon to arrive, marking the start of summer, which is reason enough to celebrate this unique day on the calendar.
