WEST ISLIP LITTLE LEAGUE CELEBRATES WITH OPENING DAY! - Players, parents, family and friends gathered for the WI Little League’s Annual Opening Day festivities! Hundreds turned out to enjoy food, bounce houses, face painting, music and the Parade of the Players. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by local elected officials and representatives from the American Legion. In keeping with tradition, Supervisor Carpenter threw out the first pitch! “Opening Day is a cherished community tradition here in West Islip. Congratulations to the LA Dodgers for their winning banner!” said the Supervisor.

The arrival of a special delivery was celebrated at the April Town Board meeting. About 2 months ago, on Saturday February 25th, Amy and Ian Steinberg were preparing for bed, as expecting and soon-to-be parents. When they found themselves on the Long Island Expressway the next morning … at 2:00 AM, they quickly learned the true meaning of the word “soon.”

So eager was their little girl to meet her proud parents, she decided that their arrival at Katz Women’s Hospital in Queens, would not come

soon enough. Now actively in labor, Amy and Ian parked their car on the shoulder of the L.I.E. near the Bay Shore exit and called 911.

Within minutes, Suffolk County PD Officers, Sgt. Justin Carey, PO Matthew Siesto, PO Arnold Reyes, and PO Kenneth Bunger arrived on scene to render aid to the couple.

Less than a minute after that, Brentwood Legion Ambulance EMTs: Nelson Lopez, Colin Richardson, Christina Autera, Cynthia Casteneda and Emily Cassar responded and moved Amy into the

ambulance where she gave birth seconds after, to a healthy baby girl: Cora Baylie Steinberg.

“Our congratulations to the happy parents! Such a beautiful baby girl she is, with such a beautiful name,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “And, I should note, baby Cora’s middle name “Baylie,” is spelled “B-A-Y” (for Bay Shore exit), “L-I-E” (for Long Island Expressway). Her first name Cora, represents the three EMT’s whose names begin with the letter C,” she added. Amy and Cora joined the celebration via FaceTime.

RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR BICYCLE SAFETY VIDEOS - Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognize Molly McGrath and Juliet LeClaire for being the Bicycle Safety Program Video Winners from Legislative District #11 at the Legislative General Meeting in Hauppauge. Both are sixth graders at Beach Street Middle School in West Islip with video messages that show an understanding of the dangers faced by all bicycle riders here in Suffolk County while reinforcing the County’s public education campaign to increase awareness and demonstrate bicycle safety at driveways, intersections and all roadways.

LaLota Announces Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County

Rep. Nick LaLota (NY01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 close-in weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and associated hardware. One of the

manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.

“I am thrilled that hundreds of high-paying defense manufacturing jobs will be coming to Suffolk County. As the son of a former Grumman Secretary and a Navy Veteran, I understand how important the defense industrial base is to local families and Long Island’s economy,” said LaLota.

“Now, as a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the strategic role Long Island’s defense manufacturing base plays in ensuring America’s military can deter the next conflict, or if needed, win it. I will always work to make sure that Suffolk County maintains our important role in our nation’s defense.”

Demand For Qualified, Talented Nurses To Grow In The Years To Come

The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near

future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly

large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other

health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.
