Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates.

They announced a fivepoint platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board.

The five-point platform includes: an independent, comprehensive forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to longterm capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses.

It will also modernize the MTA and work to bring reform, transparency, and improved service to the millions of MTA riders.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Some Benefits of Growing Older Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives.

Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available).

Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old.

With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old.

• Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness.

• Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail).

• Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization.

This can sharpen reasoning skills.

For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions.

• Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of

them.

Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Musician Earns All-Eastern Status West Islip High School senior Lauren Leonardi was selected as the sole participant in the National Association for Music

Education’s All-Eastern Honors Treble Chorus.

Leonardi, who plans to pursue a degree in musical theater in the fall, will

travel to Pittsburgh in April to perform with the most talented studentmusicians in the eastern United States.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving.

Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals.

Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years.

Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s

The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring.

Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse.

While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea.

Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders.

Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease.

Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

• Speak with your physician.

The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise.

• Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors.

Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident.

Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path.

• Stay hydrated.

Tackling Depression Can Lead To A Happier New Year (NAPSI)—As cheerful and joyous as the New Year can be, it can also be a trigger for stress and depression for some people—but there is hope. There are many resources for people who feel wrung out ringing in the New Year.

For example, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) can help. MFTs are licensed mental health professionals who work with individuals, couples (married or not), families of all types, and groups to cure or relieve mental, emotional and relational concerns of all kinds.

How To Recognize Depression To help you tell if you or someone you care about is suffering from depression, the

experts at the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) offer these warning signs: • Feeling sad and/or irritable • Changes in weight or appetite • Difficulty sleeping • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness • Inability to concentrate, remember things or make decisions • Thoughts of death or suicide.

How To Handle Depression If these symptoms look familiar, here are some things to do right now: • Recognize depression early. Depression can happen to anyone. It’s not a character defect, a weakness or a shameful

condition. It’s a serious disorder that no one is immune to.

• Engage in your life.

If you are depressed, you may feel like you don’t have an ounce of energy or motivation to tackle depression.

Recovery, however, requires your active participation. Be willing to take the first step, even though it’s not easy.

• Build your skills.

Learn why you’re vulnerable to depression and specific ways to become more resilient by breaking unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior.

Developing good coping and relationship skills can reduce both the frequency and severity of depression episodes.
