- Shane Francis Marshall became the 56th Eagle Scout of Boy Scout Troop 95 (West Islip). On March 11, 2023, he had his special Eagle Scout Court of Honor, held at the West Islip Church of Christ, in West Islip. During his Scouting tenure, Shane earned 34 merit badges (21 were required) and completed the National Youth Leadership Training, where he is presently the Assistant Youth Course Lead. For Shane’s Eagle Scout community service project, he organized, planned, and fundraised a car wash and supervised the building of a Little Library kiosk at Anthony Casamento Park, in West Islip (where you can take a book/share a book). He is currently a senior at West Islip High School and plans to attend college in the fall to study Civil Engineering.

ALL-EASTERN MUSICIAN NAMED IN WEST ISLIP - West Islip High School junior Sophia Stehlik was recently selected to the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Honors Ensembles. This prestigious event includes the ﬁnest musicians from Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. The festival will take place in Rochester, New York, in April and will include concerts, master classes with professional musicians, rehearsals with their conductors, as well as opportunities to learn and network with colleges and universities. NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME – Thomas Fauvell of West Islip was inducted into the NWHOF October 1, 2022. As a graduate of West Islip High School, 1970, Tom was awarded WIHS Athlete Citizen and one of the most versatile athletes by his coaches and teammates; wrestling, lettering, and posting numerous records. As a teacher and coach, Tom was named NYSPSW Coach of the Year three times and named U.S. Marine Corp Vince Lombardi Northeast Coach of the Year. Tom continues to contribute to local wrestling programs including Wrestling Takes Down Drugs, volunteer Referee Pinning Down Autism, clinics for coaches, referees & wrestlers, and appearing in the Netflix movie “First Match” promoting female USA Wrestling. He is currently Vice President of NY State Wrestling Officials Assoc., Rules Interpreter for NY City Wrestling Officials Assoc. & NY City Coaches, Board Member of Metropolitan Wrestling Assoc., active National Federation of Wrestling Officials Member, Friends Long Island Wrestling, a USAW Leader Member, and its NY-US-AW Down State Youth Assigner. Congratulations on this Lifetime Achievement Honor. Long Island (RTLI) is a nonproﬁt organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modiﬁcations for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Security and comfort should come to mind when we think of home...but what if your home didn’t make you feel that way? Maybe there’s no heat or hot water for your family, or your doors don’t lock so you prop a chair under the doorknob each night. When you’re living on a fixed or low income, making repairs or modifications is typically just a wish, not a reality. Homeowners know that taking care of small problems today can help avert larger, more costly problems tomorrow and this is where Rebuilding Together Long Island can come into play and help out! For more than 30 years, RTLI has focused on improving the living conditions of our neighbors and fulfilling those dreams of a safe, warm and accessible home.

Primarily a volunteer organization, they are neighbors helping neighbors and there is never a charge. From minor to sometimes major repairs, they improve the safety, health and well-being of every household. From handyman type repairs to modiﬁcations for our aging population and those with physical limitations, they’re ready to lend a hand.

Recent studies have shown that for people 65 and older, falls account for approximately 60 percent of all injury-related emergency department visits and over 50 percent of injuryrelated deaths annually. Also, up to 80 percent of falls in the home occur in the bathroom. RTLI can install grab bars and ADA height toilets, widens doorways where possible and can even have bathtubs converted to walk-in showers. Wheelchair ramps are one of their most requested modiﬁcations and can be constructed in two days. So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may beneﬁt from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are ﬂuent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can ﬁnd the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held

a deep signiﬁcance to them and would greatly beneﬁt the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette Journey before beginning their Silver Award project. To meet the Girl Scout Silver Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.

Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community

Islip Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

Silver Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problemsolving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and

inspiring others.

Troop 2261 members Leah Giana, Hayden Wolin, and Keira Johnson group created

parent comfort kits for families of children who are patients at Good Samaritan Hospital. The kits included basic toiletries that the hospital does not have to supply to patients.

Nicole Grieco, Erin Burns and Makenna Miller created kits to help relieve the stress of children about to have surgery or other medical treatment in our local hospital. Each of the kits contained sensory toys to help calm children.

Juliette Keingstein and Mikalia Budnik ﬁlled kits for their local hospital to help staff with activities for developmentally delayed adult patients. The activities are to assist the hospital staff in ﬁnding new ways to calm the nerves and occupy time of these patients.

Leah Stowers, Simone George, Arianna Sanchez and Kylie Lewis researched and organized

a camping cookbook ﬁlled with every meal that could be cooked while camping.

Ava Morrisey, Elizabeth Camaratta, Madelyn Holliday and Yaslinne Corona researched traditional Girl Scout ceremonies and customs at camp and designed a book for other Girl Scout troops to use and enjoy on their trip to camp.

Emilia Cicale, Sage Lyons and Angelina Codispoti collected and donated storage bins and shoes for the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Emma Demarco, Jessica Stowers, Leah Anthony and Sophia Mckierno created a camp book ﬁlled with activities that are best ﬁt for troop camping. After researching and testing the activities they designed and created the book themselves.

Stephenson built a bench for Walker Beach so that neighbors and veterans would have a place to sit by the ﬂagpole to enjoy as they pay respects for those who have served.

BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN - A 1974 Volkswagen Bus has new life thanks to Mr. Kozloski’s automotive students from West Islip High School who diagnosed and repaired a poorly running engine and nonfunctioning brake system in the vehicle. The engine work included repairing various vacuum leaks and some minor carburetor adjustments. The front brakes received new rotors, pads, brake hoses and one caliper. The rear brakes received new backing plates, shoes, spring kit, drums, hoses and one e-brake cable. This 1974 bus is now roadworthy again. Photo courtesy of West Islip School District
