The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

“I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and

smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. The West Islip boys varsity winter track and field team finished in third place in the league championships. The team had an impressive showing with 13 qualifying athletes at the Suffolk County

West Islip Boys Track Team Breaks Records

Large School County Championships. Junior Rocco Carpinello broke the indoor school record in the triple jump by 2 inches, recording a jump of 43 feet 8 inches. Carpinello also placed third in Suffolk

County in the long jump. Sophomore Gavin DeVito placed fourth in the 1000, breaking into the scoring heat after a solo effort of 2:38, which ranks him 10th in the county. The team also had eight athletes in

the Individual New York State Qualifying meet. Carpinello, Nick Galian, Troy Belcher, Moises Espinal, DeVito, Jake Romeo, Adrian Syku and Ryan Deegan represented West Islip well, competing

against the best athletes in the county. Romeo improved his mark in the triple jump by more than two feet to finish fifth overall. DeVito also finished fifth in the 1000. Carpinello produced his

best jumps of the season, breaking the indoor school records in the triple jump and long jump while finishing second and third respectively to earn a berth into the New York State Championship.

CRAFTY CONTRAPTIONS TO TRAP LEPRECHAUNS - Fifth graders at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School in the West Islip School District recently completed a STEM lesson for St. Patrick’s Day. The students listened to the book “How to Catch a Leprechaun” by Adam Wallace. As the fifth grade students were listening to the story, they were brainstorming ideas of how they can trap their very own leprechaun. The students were able to use a variety of materials to create a contraption that trapped their own leprechaun. The materials included popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, clothespins, paper, rubber bands and two paper cups. Legislator Flotteron Recognizes West Islip Fire Department Ex-Chief

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized West Islip Fire Department Ex-Chief Kevin Parrett for his years of service to the community. Following in the footsteps of his father, Jack Parrett, he joined the West Islip Fire Department in 1986. He spent many years as an active member of the Vanguard Engine Company and served in the ranks of Lieutenant and Captain in that company. In 2013, he was elected as 3rd Assistant Chief of the West Islip Fire Department. In the following several years he ascended the Assistant Chief ranks and was elected Chief of the Department in 2019. He served proudly and with the respect of the Department until his term ended in 2021. During his tenure in office, Chief Parrett was responsible for leading the Department through the unprecedented global pandemic of COVID and did so in a distinguished manner. His legacy will be remembered as one of dedication to duty, the community and the members of his Department.

ON THE LOOKOUT FOR LLAMAS - Manetuck Elementary School in the West Islip School District had some special visitors on March 20 and 21 courtesy of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association. Suffolk County Farm representatives traveled to the school with two of their farm’s llamas – Becky and Maverick – to teach students about the animals. From March 7-10, 10 students from West Islip High School, along with chapter adviser Diana Saadat and mathematics teacher

Tara Annunziata, attended the annual New York State DECA Career Conference in Rochester.

The West Islip DECA chapter was joined by more 2,500 other students with one common interest: to represent their school and take home a medal showing their dedication and knowledge of business.

The conference highlighted several DECA goals which were instituted throughout the conference:

civic consciousness, social intelligence, leadership development and vocational understanding. West Islip participants included: Joseph Pace, business service marketing; Braden Pritchard, entrepreneurship series; Colleen Rafferty, principles of finance; Skylar Zimmerly, retail merchandising; Caden Benedik and Christian Kay, sports and entertainment marketing team decision making; Rachel Crumlich and Kelsey McCabe, business law and ethics team decision making; and Rylie Crumlich and Emily Garabrant, business law and ethics team

decision making. Kelsey McCabe was awarded top 10 for her test.

President Rylie Crumlich said, “It was an amazing experience that I was able to share alongside my close friends and teachers and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend.” Chapter adviser Ms. Saadat added, “We may not have brought home as many medals as we would have hoped but this is the first time any of these students have participated on the state level and it was really great to be back. I’m always extremely proud of all the students. It’s not only their

hard work and dedication, but also the professional conduct they demonstrated at the conference.”

DECA is a co-curricular, student-centered organization with the purpose of providing learning opportunities to marketing education students through goal-oriented chapter activities. This was a record-breaking year for the participants competing in the state competition. Participation in these activities serves to develop greater understanding and appreciation of marketing, management and entrepreneurship.

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, recently donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group

carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.

Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who

went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” will hold their primary annual fundraiser, a walk-through style Chinese Auction, in Sayville on April 15. To support their mission or for information
