Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women.

In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence.

Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise.

It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary.

The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues.

Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery.

When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action.

Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings.

In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates.

The sling refers to a piece of material

URINARY INCONTINENCE

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates.

Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable.

Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair.

The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence.

It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency.

The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident.

Medications are often used. The purpose of

the medication is to prevent the bladder from contracting too quickly to allow more time to get to the toilet.

It may also decrease the frequency. Medications are not always helpful, and in many cases, the side effects may be troubling. When medications are not helpful or cannot be

tolerated, other options include Botox injections in the bladder and neuromodulation.

It is important to know that the majority of women with urinary leakage problems may be helped if not cured.

There is no reason to suffer in silence.

Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle.

That, I believe, is what they call irony.

So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration.

More irony, indeed.

No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors.

Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out.

And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure.

Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present.

And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all.

Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

The power of the ocean’s flow is felt on the incoming tide.

A building of momentum, a surge, explosions, fire crashing on rocks.

Life is like that.

A surging battle uphill; attainment; engulfment; then a period of peace begins.

The energy of the high water flow can bring nutriments, or bring destruction, but it always brings change.

On the ebb tide, assessments can be made, as old ground is revealed again to the light.

It is a time of peace, re-charging, quietude; A realization comes that whatever is done, is done; nothing is really controllable.

On the ebb tide no conflicts; just peace; acceptance and rest until the next high tide.

West Islip Cub Scout Pack 279 proudly honored 12 boys from their pack on Friday, March 24th with an Arrow of Light ceremony.

The Arrow of Light award is the highest achievement for a Cub Scout. Most of the boys began their cub scout journey in first grade at the age of six.

Throughout the cub program, they NEW COMMISSIONER - Executive Director Nancy Cochran, Secretary Felicia scout Lenox, Second Vice Chairman Tiffany DiBenedetto, Hauppauge Commissioner Jim have learned about the Dowling, Chairman Kay Erwood, Commissioner for Code Compliance Gene Murphy, importance of their family, Islip Commissioner Bob VanDyke, Islip Commissioner Kathy VanDyke and Bay Shore community, duty to God, first aid, physical fitness, Commissioner Paul Wernersbach.

During the tour performances, the middle schoolers played a combination of music from their winter and spring concerts in addition to demonstrations of individual instruments, which included music from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and the “Harry Potter” films as well as popular tunes such as “Closer” by The Chainsmokers, “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes and “Drag Me Down” by One Direction.

“This event allows for

the elementary students to learn about the instruments in the string orchestra and what the different instruments sound like,” said Lynnette Fawess, the orchestra director for Beach Street and Udall. “It is also a wonderful opportunity for the middle school students to visit and perform for their former teachers.

The students are always proud of their musical growth and love having the opportunity to share that with the elementary teachers.”

Udall Road Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade orchestra traveled to both Manetuck Elementary School and Oquenock Elementary School on February 16th, while Beach Street Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade orchestra visited Bayview Elementary School and Paul J. Bellew Elementary School on March 8th.
