Millions of people look forward to the month of March every year. In the northern hemisphere, March 20 or 21 marks the beginning of spring, a season of rejuvenation in which individuals enjoy the first consistent periods of warm weather since the previous fall. Though the official start of spring is a much-anticipated event, each March, the month is more than just the end of winter. The following are some interesting facts about the month of March.

· March derives its name from “Martius,” which was the first month of the earliest Roman calendar. The Romans gave the month that name in honor of Mars, the Roman god of war, and Martius was considered the beginning of warfare season, which is a far cry from the beginning that March is now associated with.

· March is host to one of the more popular sporting events in the United States. March Madness is a single-elimination college basketball tournament featuring 68 Division I teams (there are separate tournaments for men’s and women’s basketball). Much of the ongoing popularity of the event is a byproduct of bracket pools. Those pools involve participants predicting the outcomes of each game of the tournament by filling out their own bracket. March Madness can trace its name back nearly a century to an Illinois High School Association official named H.V. Porter, though many credit broadcaster Brent Musburger with popularizing the term for

· March also is host to one of the most popular holidays in many parts of the globe. March 17 marks St. Patrick’s Day, a day initially designed to commemorate the life and contributions of St. Patrick, who is the patron saint of Ireland. During the twentieth century, St. Patrick’s Day became a celebration of Irish culture and has become synonymous with boisterous revelry, particularly in cities such as Chicago and New York.

· Many people find Daylight Saving Time in March inspiring. That’s because regions that still participate in DST turn the clocks forward each March. That adds an extra hour of evening sunlight and ensures people who work indoors all day long

· The daffodil is the birth flower of March. For many people, these generally white and yellow flowers reinforce the feeling of rejuvenation that comes each March with the official beginning of spring.

· Students tend to enjoy March as well, as this is typically when Spring Break is scheduled. That’s especially common on college campuses and annually compels millions of college students to descend upon warm locales for a sunny and much-needed respite from their studies.

· Fans of inventor Alexander Graham Bell have reason to celebrate in March as well. That’s because the man behind the first phone call ever made patented the world’s first telephone on March 7, 1876.

March is known for coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb. In between that entry and exit, individuals can celebrate and enjoy a host of memorable and fun events.

Stop & Shop kicks off its annual ‘Help Cure Childhood Cancer’ campaign. Through April 2, Stop & Shop customers in the tri-state area will be able to support MSK Kids, the pediatric program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). The annual fundraiser, which celebrates its 22nd anniversary this year, raises money to support pediatric cancer care, treatment, and research. Stop & Shop has donated more than $28 million to MSK Kids since the partnership began more than two decades ago. It has supported numerous initiatives not only impacting children and families treated at MSK Kids, but also across the globe through development of cellbased therapies and other innovative, life-saving treatments.

Stop & Shop’s Help Cure Childhood Cancer campaign will run in all New York, New Jersey and Southern Connecticut stores and shoppers can donate at checkout by rounding up their total to the nearest dollar or by donating an additional $1, $3, or $5, with 100% of proceeds benefiting MSK Kids.

Enjoy Corned Beef And Cabbage This St. Patrick’s Day

Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal. March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Serves 6 to 8

Cook a whole brisket with both sections together with all its fat. (You can trim off the fat after the meat is cooked.) Whole brisket and second-cut corned beef brisket are hard to find, but your supermarket should have first-cut corned beef vacuumpacked in plastic. Choose the fattiest piece in the case and treat it gently.

You can cook the cabbage and potatoes in the same water as the corned beef. Because the other vegetables need to be cooked in water that simmers more than the meat, scoop out water from the corned beef pot and cook the vegetables in a separate pot or pots.

1 4- to 5-pound corned beef brisket

1 teaspoon pickling spices

1 head cabbage

2 pounds boiling potatoes

6 to 8 small carrots (optional)

Parsnips (optional)

Turnips (optional)

Directions:

Place the corned beef in a pot that holds at least 5 quarts of water. Cover completely with cold water. Place over high heat and bring to a simmer.

As soon as bubbles start to break on the surface of the water, adjust the heat so the water simmers very, very gently. With a slotted spoon, skim off the residue that accumulates on the surface. When the residue stops coming to the surface, add the pickling spices.

Continue to cook, with bubbles just gently breaking on the surface, for 3 to 4 hours, until fork tender.

The meat can be safely held in its water for about 2 hours; reheat gently.

Cook the vegetables until fork tender in separate pots of boiling fresh water or especially for the cabbage, use some of the water in which the corned beef was cooked.

Slice the corned beef and serve with mustard and/or horseradish on a platter, surrounded with some of the vegetables or with vegetables in a separate bowl.

Benefits Of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Special Olympics New York And Jersey Mike’s Team Up For Second Consecutive Day Of Giving

Special Olympics New York is pleased to announce that 41 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations around the state will participate in the Day and Month of Giving campaigns for the second consecutive year.

Canine Companions

is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment. With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.”

Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities.

Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

Historically high fuel prices will undoubtedly prove to be one of the defining stories of 2022. As the average price for a gallon of gas reached heights drivers might

never have imagined as recently as February 2022, some might have wondered just how much that same gallon might have cost roughly 100 years ago. According to the

Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1929 was 21 cents. Inflation calculators indicate that 21 cents in 1929 would have about the

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one
