The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Located at 286 Middle Island Rd in Medford, the Long Island Chapter works to raise awareness, recruit new puppy raisers and volunteers and support one another’s work on behalf of the Canine Companions’ mission. This Chapter is a lively network filled with opportunities for social engagement from puppy classes to fundraisers. Beyond the satisfaction of doing good work for Canine Companions, lifelong friendships are often formed among chapter members.

The benefits of having a service dog can be indescribable, often life-changing.

Canine Companions provides dogs for an array of disabilities; they o er service dogs for adults, children and veterans with a physical or auditory disability or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education settings. The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year.

In recent years, Yucca, a Facility Dog, became a new furry member of the Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead, NY (placed by Canine Companions). She helps students learn responsibility, come out of their shell and even helps those that experience issues at home, such as past traumas or emotional/social issues.

“Having a dog there to just talk to or pet can really help the children,” explained teacher Emilee Raynor. “Yucca loves our

students and they know she is not judging them, so they take more risks when working with her than with their peers.”

Yucca is incorporated into daily lessons, such as language practice, when students read to her and describe the commands Yucca is following. “I have already seen the huge impact that Facility Dog Yucca has made in the classroom. Students are so excited to come to class. They work hard for Yucca and understand their responsibilities.”

Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Kay Erwood, Keep Islip Clean (KIC) Chairman Emeritus (one of the founding members) and Islip Commissioner, at their General Meeting in the Ballroom of Brookwood Hall in East Islip. Ms. Erwood has remained actively involved since KIC’s founding in 1989. She organized KIC’s inaugural Earth Day cleanup, which continues to this day as the upcoming 34th Annual Brook Street Wetlands Cleanup. One of her proudest achievements is the establishment of the Islip Middle School KIC Club. As students graduated Middle School, their interest continued and so the Islip High School KIC Club was established. Ms. Erwood mentored an Islip Middle School KIC Club student, who is now

the current Chairman of Keep Islip Clean. Another achievement was her work saving Islip Beach from development more than 20 years ago. She has also

been involved in the yearly beautification at the Beach, including the planting of 2,000 daffodil bulbs at the flag circle, pavilion and entry.

‘SPARKS’ Love Of Science

West Islip High School research teacher

Mary Kroll is the principal investigator for Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Student Partnerships for Advanced Research and Knowledge spectroscopy collaboration. Her role includes collaborating with five other Suffolk County school districts, their research teachers and students, and scientists at BNL to develop and carryout research projects.

This year, West Islip High School has seven seniors participating in the SPARK program. They are utilizing BNL’s National Synchrotron Light Source II to analyze microplastics found in river and bay sediments. A past project included the analysis of micrometeorite samples collected from the roof of West Islip High School. Kroll’s article, “Using Planetary Sciences for Early Engagement and Development of the Next Generation of STEM Professionals,” was copublished with the SPARK team at BNL. Kroll’s team was invited to present at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in March. The LPSC is a joint effort between the Lunar and Planetary Institute and NASA.

CULINARY CREATIONS - The students in Ms. Linderman’s Building Your Tomorrow class at Udall Road Middle School in the West Islip School District learned the first steps of working together in a kitchen during a recent lesson. The students worked collaboratively in small groups to follow a recipe and measurements as they prepared chocolate covered pretzels. Building Your Tomorrow is an elective that provides students with the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to build a better tomorrow for themselves. Students will learn how to become independent through a personality assessment, career research, the job search process, financial literacy, as well as a unit in nutrition and cooking. Two Young Men Honored For Raising Funds For Warrior Ranch Foundation

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognizes students Kieran Freelin, 9th grader and Matthew Levy, 8th grader in the Islip School District who held a handmade Christmas ornament drive raising $1,400 for Warrior Ranch Foundation in Calverton. The Foundation was established as a not-forprofit 501 © organization in 2016. Their passion for

horses, love of country, and appreciation of our nation’s Veterans were combined to bring forth this unique organization designed to help Veterans and rescue horses.

In the past, Warrior Ranch Foundation has helped many Veterans/ First Responders and saved several equine lives through interaction, enrichment and family day programs

Pet Food Drive In Partnership With Baxter’s Pet Pantry & Long Island Cares

Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) is inviting the community to participate in his Annual Pet Food Drive to help families keep their pets out of shelters and remain at home where they belong. The pet food drive will take place through Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

Assemblyman Durso is asking community members and organizations to kindly donate unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned pet food and pet supplies. All items collected will be donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry, operated by Long Island Cares, which provides free pet food and pet supplies to pet-owning

families in need throughout Long Island.

“Our pets offer us unconditional love and companionship. However, for families on a tight budget, it can be a struggle to afford these extra costs,” said Durso. “Our annual pet food drive keeps pets healthy, safe, and at home with their family. I invite everyone to join our efforts to help our fury friends in need. The Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will be holding an in-person event called “Memory Cafe” as apart of the Early-Stage Social Engagement Program on Wednesday, Mar. 15 from 2-3 p.m at The Arbors at Islandia East.

The Early-Stage Social Engagement Program offers a fun and comfortable way for people living in the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia to get out, get active and get connected with one another through a variety of social events and community-based activities.

“Memory Cafe is a free early-stage social engagement program that offers a fun and comfortable way for people with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia and their care partners to get out, get active, and connect with one another,” said Danielle Peters, Care Services Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter.
