Be Safe When Lightning Strikes A change in seasons often brings about a change in the weather as well. Seasons marked by increased humidity in the air and warmer temperatures often usher in afternoon or evening thunderstorms.

With those thunderstorms come potentially dangerous lightning.

The National Weather Service says lightning strikes the United States roughly 25 million times a year, killing an average of 47 people each year. Worldwide, lighting kills as many as 2,000 people every year, states National Geographic. Even though the odds of being struck by lightning are low, certain factors put people at greater risk. Florida is considered the “lightning capital” of the United States, so residents of the Sunshine State should always exercise extreme caution upon seeing lightning. Residents of Alabama, Colorado, North

Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes.

To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes.

•Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule.

After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder, offers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

•Avoid open areas outside.

Do not be the tallest object in a field or area. Also, stay away from isolated tall trees, utility poles and towers.

•If no shelter is available, crouch low with as little

of your body touching the ground as possible.

•Lightning can travel through indoor plumbing, so avoid using water during a thunderstorm. Similarly, lightning can travel through electrical systems, like phones, radios and television reception systems.

•A car can be a safe place to stay if no other non-concrete shelter is available.

•Recognize that all thunderstorms produce lightning.

Just because you can’t see lightning doesn’t mean it’s not there.

•Get out of pools or other bodies of water. Water is an excellent conductor of lightning.

•The human body does not store electricity, says the Insurance Information Institute. Therefore, if a person is struck, you can safely offer first aid.

Lightning is no joke and never something to take lightly.

So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial.

The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin.

This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels.

Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy.

The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved.

Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so.

West Islip Business Students Bring Home DECA Trophies A total of 36 students from the West Islip High School Marketing Club, accompanied by chapter adviser Diana Saadat and chaperones Jennifer Delaney and Meghan Linderman, participated in DECA’s Suffolk County Regional Competition, with numerous West Islip students earning trophies. Held on Jan. 8 at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, the event featured more than 1,800 students from schools across the county.

First place trophies were awarded to Isabella D’Avanzo and James Sladky in Marketing Management Team, and Giavanna Genna and Jenna Ostrove in Business Law and Ethics Team.

Additional West Islip trophy winners included Jillian Brickman in Sports and Entertainment

Marketing, Jake Buonocore and Joe Montiglio in Accounting Applications, Matthew Cairo in Human Resources Management, Kayla Dixon and Lily Gilmore in Buying and Merchandising Team, Caden Dragelin and Charles Labeck in Entrepreneurship Team, Kendalyn Grunenberg and Maya Marino in Travel and Tourism Team, Patrick Henry and Ryan Wilson in Entrepreneurship Team, Catherine Lang and Holly Schweitzer in Financial Services Team, Konrad Maciejny in Entrepreneurship, and Paisley Narra in Hotel and Lodging Management.

The winning students will advance to the 59th annual DECA New York State Career Conference, where they will compete against more than 4,000 DECA members from

high schools throughout the state. The state event will be held Feb. 25-28 at the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester.

West Islip students who were awarded honorable mention in their DECA regional events were Cassidy Cullen and Alyssa DiPietro in Sports and Entertainment Marketing Team, Olivia DiStefano in Marketing Communications, Gianna Fioravanti and Delaney O’Shea in Marketing Management Team, Sophia Hofer in Business Management and Administration, Brian Kilkelly in Business Finance, and Courtney Metzger in Accounting Applications.

Other participating West Islip DECA students included John Basile, Jay Carpinello, Ty Carpinello, Alex Czarnomski, Joseph D’Avanzo, Hayley Dreyer, STUDENTS BRING HOME DECA TROPHIES - A total of 36 students from the Noelle Fallon and Erin West Islip High School Marketing Club participated in DECA’s Suffolk County Regional Spence.
