FCA Offers Free Help With Medicare Enrollment Recent Changes Make Coverage Even More Affordable

Enrolling in Medicare can be confusing. Family and Children’s Association’s (FCA) Free Nassau County Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) can help with enrollment guidance by phone.

The Open Enrollment season for people who are currently enrolled in Medicare ended December 7, 2022, but there is another potential opportunity to switch Medicare health plans for those currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO).

The additional Open Enrollment season runs from January 1 through March 31, with any changes effective the first day of the month following enrollment. There is also the opportunity to drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to traditional Medicare during this time, although you would also need to sign up for a Medicare drug plan. If you find that the plan in which you are currently enrolled does not work for you, this

added flexibility can help you find a new plan that better suits your needs.

Please note, that if you were not currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you cannot sign up for one at this time. The current enrollment period only allows people to switch or drop a plan.

Income Limit Increase Helps More People

The Medicare Savings Program has dramatically increased the income limits for eligibility. This program can help pay your Medicare Part B premium and can dramatically lower your drug costs. If you were previously found to be ineligible for this program, you should call Family and Children’s Association’s (FCA) Nassau County Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) office to see if you are now eligible.

Medicare coverage can be confusing for the uninitiated, as there are various options. Choosing the right plan for you requires

careful consideration. If you need help understanding or choosing a plan, FCA can help guide you through the process with free help by calling 516-485-3754.

There are four basic parts of Medicare:

Hospital Insurance (Part A) covers you as an inpatient in a hospital or skilled nursing or rehabilitation facility, or for skilled home care after a hospitalization. Medicare Part A also can cover hospice care if you have a terminal illness. For most people Medicare Part A is premium free.

Medicare Medical Insurance (Part B) covers physician and other outpatient services. These services include doctor visits, hospital outpatient services, lab tests; physical, speech or occupational therapy; and durable medical equipment for use in the home. The standard Part B premium amount in 2022 is $164.90. Most people pay the standard Part B premium amount. If your modified adjusted gross income as reported on your

Effective financial strategies vary depending on which stage of life a person is in. For example, a recent college graduate working his or her first professional job will not have the same financial strategy

as someone on the cusp of retirement. But one financial strategy that people of all ages can look to for guidance is the 50-30-20 approach.

Popularized by United States Senator Elizabeth Warren, the 50-30-20 approach to

financial planning can be a valuable resource for anyone trying to develop a budget. The approach is simple yet effective. Under the 5030-20 approach, income is allocated based on this breakdown:

· 50 percent of money is spent on needs, including housing costs, health insurance, car payments, and groceries

· 30 percent of money is spent on wants, including hobbies, dining out and travel

· 20 percent of money is allocated to savings

In an HMO you must use providers in that network. If you join a PPO, you can go out of the network, but you will have a higher copayment for out of network services. Medicare Advantage plans generally cover prescription drugs, otherwise covered by Medicare Part D, and frequently cover nonMedicare services such as vision, dental and hearing services.

When Things Don’t Go Your Way

As a real estate broker, I knew that the boom years of 2020 and 2021 wouldn’t last forever. For two years, houses for sale often had multiple offers before they were ever listed. Many homes went for above the asking price; sometimes well above the asking price.

But, as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Today, interest rates are more than double what they were a few years ago, home sellers aren’t leaving their 3% mortgage rates, and home buyers are waiting for more homes to hit the market and for interest rates to come down.

What do we do when business, and life, suddenly change directions? Some people put their heads in the sand and wait for everything to blow past them; others run to find a safe spot. What about the ones who stand and face the obstacle in front

of them? Often, they are the winners.

In business, when a good economy turns bad, companies will abandon their projects, lay off employees, and slash expenses. Smaller companies may go out of business because they didn’t prepare for the downturn, and they ran out of money. Look at the stores in town; that will tell you who planned for a weaker economy and

who failed to plan.

Tough times bring stress, anxiety, and tough decisions; they also bring opportunities for the people and businesses that prepare for them. Prices for many items will come down because companies have fewer customers buying their products (think of everything from home appliances to cars). Competitors will go out of business, and their customers will look for new places to spend their money. The same is true for vendors and suppliers.

What is your plan when things don’t go your way? Will you stand and fight while looking for opportunities, or will you wait for everything to blow over? I hope you decide to fight. We need stronger small businesses in our community, and we need our residents to support them along the way.

Honored For Her Research

HONORED FOR HER RESEARCH - West Islip High School senior research student

Sabrina Cassese was chosen as a semifinalist for the Long Island Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. On Feb. 12, Cassese presented her research, “An Analysis of Microplastics in Plastic Water Bottles.” Cassese is a member of the Student Partnerships for Advanced Research and Knowledge program through Brookhaven National Laboratory. In the high school lab, she developed a protocol to isolate microplastics in water from disposable bottles. She then wrote a proposal to bring the microplastics to the National Synchrotron Light Source II at BNL to use the Infrared microscope and the Frontier Synchrotron Infrared Spectroscopy beamline to analyze the chemical makeup of the microplastics. While Cassese’s research is ongoing, she has been finding that a majority of the microplastics in water from disposable bottles are made up of PET, the plastic used to manufacture most water bottles. Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner. A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE RESOURCE CENTER 2023 Memory Walk And Spring Festival

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) will host its Annual Memory Walk and Spring Festival at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, 451 Unqua Road, Massapequa, NY on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The walk will begin with registration at 8:30 am, a light breakfast, and opening ceremony. The Memory Walk and Spring Festival is being held on Earth Day and will have activities celebrating the planet as well as a Memory Tree to honor loved ones, archery activities, music, photos, food, beverages and more! In addition, many other community organizations are joining us and will be sharing resources with participants. This is an event you do not want to miss.

Each year, the Memory Walk serves to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, honor and remember those

impacted by the disease, and raise funds for ADRC to continue to provide support and services to families on Long Island. All funds raised stay on Long Island and are put right back into serving local families impacted by the disease.

It is $25 per person to participate and Children 12 and under are FREE. Consider creating a Team and having friends and colleagues join you in raising funds and awareness. All participants will receive a tote bag with goodies. Participants that raise $100 or more will also receive a commemorative T-shirt. To register visit www.ADRCinc.org and click on Events.

ADRC is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers FREE services and programs to families throughout Long Island. Our mission is to provide care, support and educational programs for families in need, and to be advocates for local families who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. All funds

raised stay on Long Island. In 2022, ADRC served over 1000 families with care consultations, support groups, educational workshops and therapy programs.
