The Lionettes brought home 1st place in the Varsity Kick division and 3rd place in the Small/Medium Varsity Pom division, marking the first time in program history the team has brought home multiple trophies in one competition. WIVK added 3 LIDTA trophies to their trophy case in 2023, including two 1st first-place trophies.

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

Watching the transition to adulthood brings upon many mixed emotions for the parent of any child. One of the deep concerns for parents of children with disabilities is how their child will succeed as they mature into adults. Will they live a productive life? Will they be able to support themselves and have independence? Will they be able to experience the beauty of accomplishments and achievements? Will they have a great quality of life?

An important consideration is employment. Meaningful employment gives a sense of pride and allows one to contribute to society in a significant way. It also provides financial stability and helps people fulfill their goals and dreams. Sadly, statistics show that about 80% of adults with disabilities are unemployed, and those who are employed are often underemployed.

The Corporate Source (TCS) is a nonprofit organization based in Garden City. They have been fulfilling their mission for 26 years, which is to promote employment opportunities for people with disabilities and to provide services leading to independence and fulfillment.

TCS is both an employer and service provider, with employees in the NY Metro area, Long Island, the Albany Capital Region, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the USVI. 85% of their direct labor have some type of a disability, including intellectual and developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, physical disabilities or other medical impairments, visual and hearing impairments, or mental health di culties that qualify as a disability under government regulations.

TCS provides outsourcing services in several areas including facilities management, janitorial, mail-room and courier services, switchboard operations and kennel attendants. Candidates for employment are referred to TCS from many sources, such as the Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) services which is o ered through the

New York State Education Department and the Veteran’s Administration (VA).TCS also takes referrals from private agencies, local school districts, vocational training programs o ered through the Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) and more.

TCS has proudly adapted their hiring process to accommodate people with disabilities. Once an application is completed, candidates have an interview and short skills assessment to determine if the job is an appropriate match. Specialized training or prior experience is helpful, but TCS will absolutely train qualified candidates. Once on the job, The Corporate South can provide job support when and where it is needed or collaborate with job coaches from other organizations to promote the best chances of success on the job. Another special service that this organization o ers to their employees, as well as to outside referrals, is what they call “benefits counseling”, which is where certified benefits counselors provide meaningful advice to adults, youth and veterans.

Meet The New President Of The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

As the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) enters it 32nd year serving the breast cancer community, we are pleased to welcome newly elected President, Donna Marano. After 16 devoted years as President, Margaret Campise made the decision to not step down but to just step aside and continue as a member on the Board of Directors.

Donna is a highly accomplished professional with more than 30 years of experience in the corporate world and has been actively involved in her community. She brings a unique blend of technical expertise and leadership skills to the role of president and champion for women and men dealing with the diagnosis of breast cancer.

A 15-year breast cancer survivor herself, Donna understands the emotional strength it takes to get

through this difficult time in one’s life. She attributes that to being surrounded by her husband, friends, and family when she had to fight the fight. She values and appreciates her new life after cancer and continues to attend support groups to “be there” for newly diagnosed women starting their journey and to forge relationships and share experiences with other

survivors.

Donna’s role as President of the WIBCC highlights her passion and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. In addition to community outreach and fundraising efforts, the organization’s “Lend a Helping Hand” program provides many services to support the needs of those undergoing breast cancer treatment, including transportation to and from treatment, meals, wigs, protheses, medical co-payments and housecleaning.

A grass roots organization, WIBCC is accredited as a tax deductible 501c3 charity with a Board of Directors comprised solely of dedicated volunteers. Donna is proud of the work it does to making a meaningful impact in the lives it serves and is at the forefront to continue this effort, leading the way with passion and commitment!

Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought

great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.

Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” will hold their

primary annual fundraiser, a walk-through style Chinese Auction, in Sayville on April 15. Steven J. Flotteron recognizes several 7th graders at St. Patrick’s School; Carrie Reinhold, Religious Education Program; Christine Glynn, Principal and Fr. Sean Gann, Pastor, St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Shore for their efforts in helping collect Valentine’s Day cards for yearly donation by 12-yearold Preston Caruso who attends the K-12 Private Academy. Preston started making Valentine's Cards during Covid in 2020, and donating them to Our Lady of Consolation in West Islip. This year, Preston expanded his distribution of cards to include; patients of Good Samaritan University Hospital, Our Lady of Consolation, The Harborside, and Meals for Veterans.  He has also reached out to several other organizations to help in collecting cards for distribution, including; St. Patrick School, St. Patrick Religious Education Program, St. Joseph Religious Education Program, West Islip Public Library Teen Program, West Islip Public Library Children’s Program and Bay ShoreBrightwaters Public Library Children’s Program. Nearly 500 cards were collected this year.

Creating Healing Mandalas In The Circle Of Life

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum is excited to host our first-ever in-person grief healing art workshop on Saturday, March 4th with Deborah Adler, MA, ATRBC, LCAT Registered, Board Certified and Licensed Art Therapist

Session 1: 5pm - 6:15pm

Session 2: 7pm - 8:15pm!

Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “Circle.” Mandalamaking is a common Art Therapy method often used for insight, healing and selfexpression. It is another way to practice mindfulness. Circles often symbolize the connectedness we have with

all people, including our lost loved ones. Licensed Art Psychotherapist, Deborah Adler, will lead you into creating your very own mandala allowing you to explore your feelings whether they reflect grief, sadness, inspiration or hope. No artistic skill or experience is required. Get creative, allow your mind to wander and enjoy the process while you design your art piece with colors, images and symbols that inspire you to reflect on your loved one. There will be dedicated time following the art experience to share mandalas and process any feelings and emotions that

came up for you.
