Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time.

Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between.

We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited.

We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration.

But that was where the academic connection ceased.

Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned.

Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed.

Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection.

But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. Finishing First West Islip High School’s varsity boys winter track team won the League 3 championship held on January 20th at Suffolk Community College.

In individual contests, senior and co-captain Greg Bove finished first in the triple jump; Bove and fellow senior and cocaptain Desmond Benton finished in second and third place, respectively,

in the 600-meter run; senior and co-captain Kevin Cassidy tied for third place in high jump; senior and co-captain Peter DeMicco finished first in the 1,000-meter run; sophomore Andrew Paules earned first place in both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs; and the 4x800-meter relay team of Benton, Bove, DeMicco and Paules earned first in

their event.

“Under the guidance of coaches Anthony Yuli and Jim Dooley, the athletes continue to improve every day and saved their best performances for the league championship,” said Athletic Director Tim Horan.

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage.

Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills.

They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage!

Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days.

Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor.

Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information.

Courses to Be Offered Suffolk County Community College will offer courses at Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard base, home of the 106th Rescue Wing, located in Westhampton Beach this spring. A first for the 106th Rescue Wing and the college.

Suffolk County Community College will offer two courses this spring that will enable Air National Guard members to gain credits towards an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF).

The CCAF degree is mandatory for higher level promotions. Psychology 101 begins on February 1 and English 101 follows on

February 6th.

The 106th Rescue Wing Command Chief, Michael T. Hewson said, "In the Air Force, we expect our members to strive for excellence. One of the ways we can do this is though continuing our education."

Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay announced the innovative program with wing leadership last fall at a dedication ceremony for a Veterans Plaza at the college’s Eastern Campus honoring Suffolk County Community College student and Air National Guard Tech. Sgt. Louis Bonacasa, 31, killed in action in December of

2015 while serving in Afghanistan as a security forces defender.

“Suffolk County Community College is committed to assisting our military by helping them achieve their educational and personal goals. In the process, we know we are fulfilling our community mission as well as helping to produce a new generation of lifelong learners equipped with the skills they can utilize both during their careers and long after," said College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. Dr. McKay added that the program will continue for the foreseeable future.

Long Island Fight for Charity, the nation’s only all-volunteer charity fund raising event and program is now conducting its search for 2018 volunteer charity boxers. The LIFFC 15th Main Event to be held on Monday, November 19th, 2018 will feature 10 or more bouts between volunteer charity boxers who have demonstrated their personal commitment to raising a minimum of $10,000 for the Fight for Charity organization’s fund, raising goals that benefit local charities, intensive physical training and participation in promotional activities and media interviews. Over $1 million has been donated to Long Island charities since LIFFC’s founding.

who will enter training to prepare them to step in the ring at the 15th Main Event. Boxing experience is not required. What is required is a commitment to fundraising, “character,” a willingness to train and be ready to meet a business colleague toeto-toe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. This is a rare opportunity for individuals to make a personal commitment of time, talent and to truly “give back.” Hundreds of men, women and children here on Long Island dealing with life’s struggles will be the benefactors.

Since 2003, LIFFC has distributed funds each year to Long Island charities including: Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School, National Foundation for Human Potential (FREE) and other local charities.

“Men and women from the Long Island business community who want to ‘give back’ to the community in a meaningful way will want to consider volunteering to be a charity boxer.

Grant Program Call for Entries WHAT: TangerKIDS Grant Program, an initiative designed to award grant money to schools within the communities of Tanger Outlet Centers nationwide, has officially opened its call for entries within the Deer Park, NY community.

The TangerKIDS Grant Program was designed to satisfy the specific funding needs of local schools – from the implementation
