East Islip High School senior swimming star Camryn Kreuscher signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Rhode Island. At the Dec. 19 ceremony, she was congratulated by her family and Athletic Director Stephen Restivo.

During her remarkable swim career at EI, Kreuscher has achieved AllState, All-Long Island and All-County honors, and won the county championship in the 50-yard freestyle on Nov. 3. A member of the school’s Foreign Language Honor Society, she plans to major in textile and fashion merchandising while at URI. “The two main reasons I was interested in URI was that the school offered my major and that it has a Division I swim team which competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference,” said Kreuscher. “During my official visit, I was given the opportunity to spend time with the assistant coach and head coach as well as meet the girls on the team at a pasta party at their beach house.

Once the visit ended, I knew URI was a great fit for me. Being a swimmer, the close proximity to the beaches was another reason for my decision.”

After graduation, Kreuscher will spend the summer working as an ocean lifeguard on Fire Island before heading off to URI in late August.

Let’s Take In Some Culture This Weekend “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life.” - Unknown When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit?

I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything.

I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the

week ahead, we can sometimes lose sight of the opportunity that each weekend holds for us.

As I edit the Coming Events Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible.

When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night.

Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s

comb through What’s Happening Around Town in South Bay’s Neighbor as well as other local Long Island newspapers. Look at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town.

Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two.

Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too.

ouples are increasingly bucking long-established trends to make weddings uniquely their own. One of today’s more popular tradition-busting trends is not adhering to gender roles when couples select friends and family members for their wedding parties.

According to The Daily Mail, over the past year, weddings across Australia and other areas of the world have seen a rise in “groomswomen” and “bridesmen.” These new modern roles are blurring the lines of wedding traditions past.

Until recently, the vast majority of wedding couples selected members of the same sex to fill the roles needed for the ceremony and reception.

Couples have often said that choosing whomever they desire to stand beside them during their wedding is more authentic than separating people simply because of gender.

For example, grooms would choose fellow males to serve as their groomsmen, while brides choose other females for their

One of the areas where mixing and matching genders may get a tad sticky is with older, more traditional guests. They may not understand the freedom of choice in the wedding. However, couples can discuss their bridal parties to select people who they think might prefer that couples adhere to tradition.

Another possible snag is with bachelorette parties and bachelor parties. A solution to this dilemma may be to simply organize a getaway weekend for the entire bridal

party, and not separate parties for each side. Couples are increasingly deviating from tradition for their weddings by looking beyond gender when picking wedding party members.

In a recent story on TheKnot, written by Carrie Anton, wedding planner Alex Chalk stated that with abandoning traditional gender roles in wedding parties, brides or grooms “get to be surrounded by the ones you want by your side,” regardless of gender. Supposing the brides closest friend and confidante happens to be male, or the groom’s closest pal just happens to be female? It’s becoming more and more accepted to bestow bridal party designations as the bride and groom so desire.

The article goes on to state that these modern bridal party roles obviously require new name designations, hence bridesman or groomsmaid. But let’s not forget the anticipated special designations of bride’s best man or groom of honor.

Tying the knot can be an expensive endeavor. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed nearly 13,000 brides and grooms in the United States, the average cost of a wedding was more than $33,000.

When it comes to putting together memorable nuptials that will wow your crowd, sometimes less is more.

On Friday January 11, 2019, Girl Scout troop 2821 visited American Family Care (AFC)/Urgent Care’s Ted E Bear Hospital in West Islip with Girl Scout Leaders Helen Liriano & Sandy DiPietro.

The Troop was invited to bring their Teddy Bears, special stuffed animals or dolls to AFC Urgent Care where our “Teddy Bear Clinicians” were on hand

to treat the aches, bumps, lumps and bruises.

The troop, with their special patient in tow, experienced firsthand what happens from check-in to check-out. At Registration each child filled out a health care card for their patient and it was off to the first of three stations.

At the Boo Boo & Vital Station, former Girl Scout Victoria, had the

troop assess the patient’s ailments, applying bandages and Band-Aid’s.

This station taught them the importance of proper bandaging, when and how to apply pressure. Then it was off to the Physical Station where Emergency Medical Technician, Taylor, was waiting for them with a stethoscope, BP cuff and heart rate monitor.

The troop not only check

their patient’s but also themselves, always learning along the way.

Finally, off to the Radiology Station, where Dr. Mojid was there ready to talk about x-rays, bones, breaks and injuries. The troop was very excited to see how x-rays can help doctors see the bones in their bodies.

At the end of their tour, Pretzels’ were the snack of choice and each girl completed a get-well-card for new AFC Urgent Care patients as their way to pay-it-forward.

Celebrating Diversity West Islip’s Beach Street Middle School recently celebrated Global Diversity Awareness Month by encouraging students to take a diversity pledge during lunch periods.

The students pledged to do their best to include others, make everyone feel

welcome and stand up to people who intentionally make others feel unwelcomed.

Guided by adviser Francine Ahearn, the Diversity Club’s mission is to help build a culture of inclusion and connection in the school, so that

students can celebrate their differences together.

The club will continue to celebrate diversity this winter with a special assembly including guest speakers and performances.

Community Service Ideas Close to Home West Islip High School students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate/Creativity, Activity, Service program recently took a field trip in their own school. During the event, the students met with career coordinator Ryan Vollmuth to discuss how they can job shadow and find apprenticeships in the local area, with school

social worker Robin Cutler to talk about community work, and with school nurse Sharon Kerrigan to learn about fields in medicine.

IB diploma candidates must complete an independent project that meets CAS requirements, which state that students will be creatively and actively engaged in

servicing their community.

“The best way to get ideas and a plan of action for these projects is right at home,” said IB/ CAS coordinator Virginia Scudder. “Many of the students do not realize all of the amazing resources right at their own door.”

January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation

The PBS Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. They particularly focus on selfdetermination and full inclusion in the local community.

Their mission is to help these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, as well as encourage long-term planning and to support efforts towards establishing social connections and friendships in the community.

For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality.

In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to selfdirect their services. As of September 30, 2018, there were 2,926 individuals enrolled in ‘Self Direction’ on Long Island. (Source: NYS OPWDD) Self-Direction is a person-centered approach that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to create a life plan with supports that they chose, based on their unique strengths, needs and goals.

It also gives the individual more control over

how funding is used to purchase needed support and services.

While the number of individuals choosing to self direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks.

The PBS Community Foundation initiatives started with Big Time Glee, a singing group that now meets twice a month in Smithtown.

This group performs at various events such as Long Island Ducks games!

In response to numerous requests from the Self-Directed community, the Foundation created a similar group in Nassau, which meets monthly in Bellmore. This is called the Nassau Voice.

Aditionally, another initative, The Crafting Connection, meets every other week to work on different crafty projects or just to socialize and play games.

More recently, Self-Directed individuals are focusing on the health of their mind and body. The PBS Community Foundation offers Yoga Without Boundaries twice a month at the Yoga Darshana Center in West Babylon.

This center generously donates the space and Dan Elfawal, a certified special educator and yoga instructor, leads a free yoga class open to individuals with all abilities. Dan says the students walk away focused, calm and self confident. Through the practice of yoga, students build strength and develop coping skills, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle.
