Benefits To Cooking Your Own Meals
Aging men and women may be tempted to eschew home cooking entirely. After all, there are plenty of convenient frozen or take-out foods available that can be whipped up in a snap. However, there are certain benefits to cooking your own meals. John Moore, DO, an Aetna medical director and senior health specialist, says that cooking can be good for helping to stave off cognitive decline. Dr. Moore notes that, when cooking, the mind is put to use following a recipe and learning new skills and tasks. Furthermore, cooking for oneself can boost seniors’ self-confidence, reassuring them that they can handle
an important daily task without having to rely on their family for meals. As long as it is deemed safe (i.e., no sign of cognitive decline or forgetfulness), seniors should be encouraged to continue cooking.
West Islip High School Varsity Cheer Team Makes School History At National Competition
The West Islip High School Varsity Cheer Team recently made school history at a national cheerleading competition held in Orlando, Florida. Competing at Nationals from January 30 through February 1 at Walt Disney World, the team became the first in WIHS history to qualify for finals in both Game Day Cheer and Traditional Cheer — a milestone never before achieved by a West Islip team.
The athletes earned their finals berth in Game Day Cheer by advancing directly from preliminaries to finals, while in Traditional Cheer they progressed from
preliminaries to semifinals before qualifying for finals.
Game Day Cheer mirrors the high-energy style seen at college football games, while Traditional Cheer features advanced stunting, choreography, and dance elements.
The team’s success is the result of months of dedication and hard work, beginning in the summer as athletes trained intensively to earn their positions and compete at the national level.

Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.
